Sprinting Duo Leads Mountaineer Men at Appalachian Open

February 8, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. ? Sophomore sprinters Charles Derrickson (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Daniel Neal (Fayetteville, N.C.) each recorded two top-three finishes as the Appalachian State University men’s indoor track and field team hosted the Appalachian Open on Thursday at the Holmes Center.
Derrickson recorded one of two ASU individual victories in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.55. He was followed closely behind by Neal in second with a time of 7.77. The two also came in back-to-back in the 200-meter dash which Derrickson placed second in with a time of 22.49, just ahead of Neal in third with a time of 22.51.
Junior Barron Shell (Hays, N.C.) won the pole vault with a mark of 15-5.50, just shy of his personal best of 15-7 which he set last season.
Junior Wes Kiser (Burlington, N.C.) and senior Rance Shuler (Robbinsville, N.C.) each came in second in their respective events. Kiser recorded a throw of 17.12 meters (56-2.0) in the weight throw, while Shuler ran the 800 meter run in a time of 1:57.30.
Junior David Cherry (Jacksonville, N.C.) added a second-place tie in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.54.
Some Mountaineers will head to Clemson, S.C. for the Clemson Invitational on Saturday, February 10. For most of the team next up is the Southern Conference Indoor Championships at also at Clemson on Saturday and Sunday, February 17-18.

Two Women’s Holmes Center Records Fall at Appalachian Open

February 8, 2007 - BOONE, N.C. ? Freshmen Lynda Hiller (Apex, N.C.) and Chenel McFadden (Durham, N.C.) each broke a Holmes Center record as the Appalachian State University women’s indoor track and field team hosted the Appalachian Open Indoor Invitational Thursday at the Holmes Center.
McFadden broke both the ASU Holmes Center and Holmes Center records in the 500-meter dash with a first place time of 1:17.90. Her time marked the fifth best in school history. Hiller broke the former ASU Holmes Center and Holmes Center records that were held by Piper Taylor with a first-place time of 42.09 in the 300-meter dash. Hiller moved into fifth place in the ASU record books with her time.
Also in the sprints, freshman Ashley McKiver (High Point, N.C.) and Porsha’ Evans-Hardy (Winston-Salem, N.C.) grabbed third-place finishes. McKiver placed third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.10, while Evans-Hardy finished third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.75.
Junior Brittani Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) and Shaniqua Wallace (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each recorded two top-five finishes in the throws events. Williams won the shot put with a toss of 13.81 meters (45-3.75) and placed second in the weight throw with a heave of 15.68 meters (51-5.50). Wallace placed fourth in both events with a throw of 14.63 meters (48-0.0) in the weight throw and 12.30 meters (40-4.25) in the shot put.
Sophomore Shea Snow (Boonville, N.C.) recorded the other first place finish for Appalachian in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters (11-5.75). Junior Kaitlyn Heeke (Hickory, N.C.) and freshman Julie Ward (Boone, N.C.) also placed in the top 10. Heeke finished third with a mark of 3.35 meters (10-11.75) and Ward came in fourth with a mark of 3.20 meters (10-6.00).

School Records, Personal Bests Set at Clemson
New school records and personal bests were the theme this weekend for the College of Charleston as six Cougars posted personal bests and two more set school records at the Tiger Invitational in Clemson, S.C.

“The consistency in training has paid off,” said head coach Amy Schuckert. “This weekend has been a great confidence builder going into the Southern Conference Championships next weekend.”
Emily Jackson posted a school record time of 1:02.78 in the 400-meter dash and had a personal best in the 60-meter dash with a time of 00:08.43. Amy Laughlin notched a school-record time of 2:23.06 in the 800-meter dash. Summer Chambless pole vaulted to a school-record 10-11 ? feet.
Dominique Boone set a new personal best with her 00:27.46 in the 200-meter dash; Kirsten Schumy had a personal best in the 400-meter with a time of 1:04.72; Karen Corson clocked a personal best in the 3,000-meter dash with a time of 10:33.22; and, Sarah Massenburg notched a personal best in the 5,000-meter dash with a time of 19:37.83.
The Cougars will travel to Clemson Feb. 17-18 for the SoCon Indoor Championships, before beginning the outdoor portion of the schedule at Charleston Southern on March 10.

McNeill Makes History Again, Sets Weight Throw Record
Clemson, S.C. ? Senior Stephanie McNeill set a school record and Southern Conference leading mark in the 20lb. weight throw as The Citadel closed out the Clemson Invitational Saturday. McNeill topped her own school record by almost two feet in the prelims then added another foot and a half in the finals to her top mark.
McNeill finished fourth, just inches behind three of the top throwers from Clemson and Georgia Tech. McNeill stood in fourth after the preliminary rounds with a then-school record mark of 54’ 6” in the weight throw, topping her previous school record mark of 52’ 10.5”. McNeill added to that in the finals with a fourth place finish throw of 55’ 11” which also goes down as the longest mark set by a Southern Conference athlete this season.
Personal best throws were also set on the men’s side as senior Alex Croskey recorded a new personal best mark of 46’ 0” in the 35lb. weight throw as he finished sixth. Freshman Kenny Stephens followed him with a 10th place mark of 32’ 4.25”.
The Citadel’s middle and long distance runners also notched a stellar day as freshman Natalie Wolin fell just short of a school record in the 3,000m, finishing 12th with a time of 10:55.64. Wolin’s time is the second-fastest 3k time in school history and was followed by sophomore Erin Ritter’s 13th place time of 10:559.59, placing her third in school history.
In the men’s 3k, senior Will Wilson led with a personal best time of 9:04.15, topping his previous best by more than 10 full seconds as he finished seventh. Freshman Brendan Kight’s personal best time of 9:10.34 earned him a ninth-place finish. Senior Charles Kutz also recorded a personal best mark as he finished 14th with a time of 9:17.67
In the men’s 400m, Jonathan Vallejo placed 18th with a season best time of
50.99 while Bryan Hladik recorded a personal best time of 51.85 to finish 31st.

Davidson Men’s Indoor Track & Field
DAVIDSON, N.C. Senior Douglas Noreen (Apex, N.C.) placed his name in the Wildcat record books yet again, this time breaking his own record in the 800-meter as he was one of five runners and field event members to place in the top-10 on Friday at the Carolina Classic on the campus of North Carolina.
Noreen, who last season set the mark in the 800 with a time of 1:55.41, earned a second-place finish with a new record time of 1:54.75. He also holds the school record in the mile in both indoor and outdoor track.
Speaking of the mile, freshman Chet Howland (Asheville, N.C.) registered a time a team-best time of 4:38.09 to pick up a seventh-place finish.
In the field events, senior Jim Walter (Solon, Ohio) and sophomore Will Funderburg (Buford, Ga.) each picked up top-10 finishes at the classic.
Walter earned a mark in the Davidson top-10 Performance and Performer list by throwing the weight 44' 8-1/4" for an eighth-place showing.
Funderburg, who last week set a school record in the shot put, tallied a ninth-place finish with a throw of 47' 3/4", good enough for a spot on the Davidson top-10 performance list.
Senior John Bialas (Auburn, Mass.) rounded out the Wildcats who earned top-10 performances with a ninth-place showing in the long jump as he picked up a jump of 20' 10-1/2".
The men now gear themselves up for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 17-18 held in Clemson, S.C. Last season, the Wildcats picked up a 5th place finish and their 33 points scored as a team were the most ever registered by any pervious Davidson team.

Burns Paces Women Tracksters at Carolina Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Brenna Burns, who earlier in the season set a new Davidson record in the 3,000-meters, turned in the team's top finish of the day once more, as the Wildcat women's track and field team competed at the Carolina Classic on the campus of the University of North Carolina on Friday afternoon.
Burns placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:08.79, less than three seconds off former Wildcat standout Kathy Beach's school record of 5:06.21.
Another consistent force in the distance events, sophomore Caroline Sanker placed sixth in the event with a time of 5:10.91.
The school-record holder in the high jump, freshman Kristen Meister finished eighth in the event with a mark of 1.63 meters. She also placed 15th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.17.
Sophomore Chieko Phillips continued her strong showings in the sprints with a 15th-place finish in the 400-meters with a time of 1:00.98.
Things heat up again next weekend, when the Wildcat women compete at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 17-18 in Clemson, S.C.

Phoenix Tracksters Set Records at Tiger Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. ? Elon University’s Jessica Clendenning, Dominique Price and Monique Vines all turned in program-record performances at the Tiger Invitational women’s indoor track and field meet Saturday at the Clemson University Field House.
Clendenning broke her own school record in the pole vault, leaping 12-05.50 (3.80 meters) to place second out of 24 athletes. She had actually tied Clemson's Caroline Kennedy for first place, ultimately falling to Kennedy following an exciting jump-off for the title. Clendenning last improved upon her own program milestone with a vault of 12-03.50 (3.75 meters) at the Liberty Kickoff Invitational on Dec. 3.
Price tied her own school record from last season’s conference meet in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.70 seconds during the preliminary round, the seventh-best time achieved by the 45 participants. She ended up ninth out of the 16 competitors in the finals, clocking in at 8.96 seconds.
Vines broke her program record in the triple jump, leaping 37-01.75 (11.32 meters) to finish 13th out of 32 athletes. Vines had just eclipsed a five-year-old school mark in the triple jump two weeks ago with a distance of 35-04.50 (10.78 meters).
Price also placed 19th out of 51 sprinters in the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 7.98 seconds. She still owns the school milestone of 7.91 seconds, set at the conference meet last season.
Elon’s Jennine Strange (24th/2:25.33), Jenny Pearce (28th/2:26.94) and Tara Mulcahy (29th/2:28.48) all finished high among the 57-athlete field in the 800-meter run. Phoenix thrower Sara Rickert tossed the shot put 10.57 meters to end up tied for 15th place out of 32 participants.
The Phoenix will return to the Clemson Field House next weekend for the 2007 Southern Conference Championships.

Paladins Garner Several Top Five Finishes at Tiger Invitational
Sharpe Brings Home Second-Place Mark in 800m

Clemson, S.C. - The Furman indoor track & field team had several impressive showings at the Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday, including Paladin senior McKenzie Sharpe's second-place finish in the women's 800m run. Sharpe crossed the finish line less than three tenths of a second off the winner with a time of 2:15.97. The mark is the second-best of Sharpe's career, just off her top finish of 2:15.95.
Competing as an unattached competitor, sophomore Patrick Morgan won the men's 3000m run with a time of 8:30.45. Morgan was also part of a distance medley team that posted a fourth-place finish with a mark of 10:33.19. Competing with Morgan were Joseph Tenini, Jed Wilkerson and Alex Plasencia. Plasencia also garnered a top-10 finish on the day. His time of 15:38.04 was good for an eighth-place showing in the 5000m run.
The Lady Paladins were very successful in the 5000m run, placing three individuals among the top 12. Senior Guinn Garrett placed sixth with a mark of 19:01.49. Megan Lordi followed in ninth place with a time of 19:15.79. Junior Mo Campbell finished in 12th place with a time of 19:54.13.
Next up for the indoor track & field team is the Southern Conference Championships, which will take place on the campus of Clemson University beginning on Friday, February 16.

Eagles Claim Two Titles at Carolina Classic; Ready for Conference Championships
STATESBORO, GA ? Georgia Southern’s track and field team returns home with two titles, numerous season high marks and three career bests after a competitive weekend at the Carolina Classic.
Freshman Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga./Manchester) had an outstanding weekend, claiming the title in the Triple Jump with a season-high distance of 38’09.75”. Her mark puts her fourth on GSU’s all-time list. Seniors Brittany Chase (Lawrenceville, Ga./Berkmar) and Lauren Jacobs (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) finished third and fourth (38’01.25” and 37’10.75”, respectively) in the event.
Chase also had a note-worthy performance in the 60m Hurdles, finishing third overall with a time of 8.75.
Senior Nicole Brown (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) had two individual top three finishes for the day with her best performance coming in the Long Jump. Brown’s distance of 19’02.75” put her at second place and is 1’02” better than her previous season high (38’07.5”).
In the 60m, Brown obtained her best finish of the season (third) clocking in at 7.63. Anthony took fifth in the event while achieving a personal-best and taking over fourth place on GSU’s indoor honor roll with her finish of 7.69.
Senior Emily Greeson’s (Calhoun, Ga./Gordon Central) 53’02.75” mark in the Weight Throw gave her a second place finish and a new career-high. In addition to that event, Greeson set a second personal-best in the Shot Put (43’02.25”).
The Eagle women picked up the second title of the day with their 4x400m Relay performance. Junior Amber Wilson (Calhoun, Ga./Gordon Central), Brown, Watts, and senior Rashedah Arnold (Fayetteville, Ga./Landmark Christian) once again proved dominance in the event clocking in at 3:58.49.
Adding to the relay title, Arnold also obtained a runner-up finish in the 400m (57.80) and took third with a time of 25.70 in the 200m.
“The big thing about this weekend was that both ends of the team were pulling their weight, the seniors and the freshmen,” said head coach Natalie Smith. “It’s really exciting going into [the indoor conference championships] with everyone giving their personal best. They are really starting to gel as a team and the timing is perfect. This indoor meet could really set the stage for the outdoor season and lead to a conference title.”
Georgia Southern will return to indoor action Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Clemson University to compete at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships. The Eagles are prepared to improve from their third place overall finish at the 2006 event.

Catamounts prepare for 2007 Indoor Track Championships next weekend

Clemson, S.C. - In the final tune-up before next weekend's Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, ten Western Carolina track athletes attended the Clemson Tiger Invitational over the weekend. The majority of WCU's sprinters, jumpers, vaulters and field-event athletes were given the weekend off to rest for the conference meet with the Catamounts sending its middle distance runners to compete.
Junior Kerrie Savery headlined WCU's performances with seasonal-best time of 5:05.26 to take fourth place in the women's mile run. Also for Western's women, junior Brooke Saddler posted her best time of the year in the women's 800-meter run (2:24.61), while sophomore Skye Aiello ran a 10:52.66 - her seasonal best - in the 3,000-meter run. Freshman Sara Dickson also ran for the Catamounts in the 3,000-meter.
On the men's side, senior Dylan Hermelee clocked his best time of the season in the mile run by 83-hundredths of a second, running 4:29.00 with both Noah Taylor and Jesse Ramirez also competing in the event. Aaron Grant shaved three seconds off his season-best time in the 800-meter dash, crossing the line in a WCU-best 1:58.42 to finish eighth. Freshman Jestin Jennings was just behind his teammate in 11th with a time of 1:58.65, with his classmate Chris Justice also running for the Cats.
Western will return to action this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18, at the SoCon Indoor Championships to be held in Clemson, S.C. The Catamount men are the defending indoor champions, while the women will look to build upon last season's runner-up finish.

Wofford Men’s Track and Field places two in top-15 at Tiger Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. ? Bryan Brooks and Rickey Bunton earned top-15 finishes at the Tiger Indoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday morning.
Bunton, also a running back on the football team, earned a 12th-place finish in the Men’s Long Jump in a field of 34 competitors. Bunton’s 6.50m jump missed a top-10 finish by less than .2 meters.
In the men’s 3000m run, Brooks finished with a time of 9:17.18 to garner a 13th-place finish in the 27-competitor field.
The Track and Field teams will compete in the Southern Conference Indoor Championships next weekend, Feb. 17, in Clemson, S.C.

Belcher earns top-20 finish at Tiger Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. ? Senior Crystal Belcher earned a 17th-place finish in the shot put at the Tiger Invitational Saturday morning.
Belcher heaved the shot 10.50m, edging 15 other competitors in a field of 33.
The women’s track and field team will compete in the Southern Conference Indoor Championships next weekend, Feb. 17, in Clemson, S.C.
