The 2007-08 academic year marks the 25th anniversary of women’s championships in the Southern Conference, and to celebrate the occasion, the Southern Conference is spotlighting individuals who have been named to the league’s 25th Anniversary teams.
Shannon Donovan (2003-06) of UNC Greensboro capped off a successful collegiate career by leading the Spartans to the 2006 Southern Conference women’s soccer regular season and tournament championships. Despite playing as a defender, the Melville, N.Y. native finished her senior season ranked second in the SoCon in points (23) with seven goals and nine assists. Donovan stepped up her game as well in big moments, keying the Spartans’ 2006 SoCon tournament title by scoring twice in the first 11:36 of the championship match while also assisting on UNCG’s third goal.
Donovan was honored as a three-time first-team all-Southern Conference selection, and she is one of just two players in league history to be named Freshman of the Year (2003), Player of the Year ((2006) and Tournament Most Valuable Player (2006).
In her time at UNCG, the Spartans fashioned a 33-6-3 Southern Conference record while claiming regular season titles in 2004 and ’06 to go along with tournament championships in 2003 and ’06.
In addition to her Southern Conference awards, Donovan was a four-time all-state selection by the North Carolina Sports Information Association and a member of the Soccer Buzz and NSCAA all-Southeast region teams.
Following her UNCG career, Donovan was a member of the Long Island Fury in the summer of 2007, helping the team to an 8-2-2 record.
