Reno, Nev. - Senior Scott Ervin (Weatherford, Okla./Weatherford) captured his second tournament win of the 2007 season on Tuesday night for Appalachian State at the Reno Tournament of Champions. The Mountaineers earned two placing finishes to capture an eight place finish in the team results.
The top seeded Ervin went 5-0 on the day including a 11-8 victory over the second seeded Morgan Atkinson of Cal State Fullerton in the final to claim the championship. The 149-pounder adds the Reno Tournament of Champions title to his victory from the Keystone Classic less than a month ago. Ervin is now 13-2 on the season and holder of the best record for the Mountaineers.
Senior Tommy Hutchinson (Brandon, Fla./Brandon) posted a strong showing in the 165-pound wrestleback to capture fifth place. Hutchinson won his first two matches in the championship bracket by pins before falling to top seed Patrick Pitsch of Arizona State in the quarterfinal round. In the wrestleback, Hutchinson earned two more pin victories before falling to second seed Jake Dieffenback of Oklahoma State in the semifinal. Hutchinson then defeated Daniel Atondo of Cal State Bakersfield by a pin in the fifth place match.
Senior Neal Martin (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) lost his opening match before rattling off three straight victories in the wrestleback before being knocked out in the Round-of-16. Sophomore Frank Celorrio (Miami, Fla./Hialeah) and senior Terreyl Williams (Durham, N.C./Riverside) each finished 2-2. Senior Marcus Cox (Lillington, N.C./Western Harnett) improved to 6-6 on the season with a 1-2 day at the Tournament of Champions.
Heavyweight juniors Jared Campbell (Chapel Hill, N.C./Douglas MacArthur) and Derrick Calloway (Newland, N.C./Avery County) posted 2-2 and 0-2 records in Reno. Senior 157-pounder Eddie Hutchinson (Brandon, Fla./Brandon) was winless on the day.
Freshman Chip Powell (Greensboro, N.C./SW Guilford) improved to 4-4 on the season with a 3-2 record on the day. Other Freshmen Dylan Temple (Marietta, Ga./Walton), John Allen Griswold (Moore, S.C./James F. Byrnes) and Austin Trotman (Winston Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) posted 1-2, 1-2 and 2-2 records respectively on the day.
Appalachian State will continue the 2007-08 campaign on December 29th at the Southern Scuffle hosted by UNC Greensboro. The two-day event is one of the premier wrestling events in the southeast.

The Citadel
Reno, Nev. ? The Citadel grapplers defeated their opponents by eight or more points in nearly half of their victories at The Reno Tournament of Champions on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The tournament featured 12 teams that are currently ranked in their respective divisions and numerous top ranked Division I individual wrestlers.
Four Bulldog freshman earned victories in the prestigious tournament. Redshirt freshman Derek Royster started the tournament off with bonus points, defeating Sadat Haseeb of UC Davis 11-1. True freshman Keith Koziel also received bonus points with a medical forfeit from No. 3 seeded Josh Zupanic of Stanford. Brendan Prince, 165-pound freshman, recorded his second and fastest fall of the season in the first round of the consolation bracket. Prince pinned Southern Oregon’s Jason Appleton at the 4:31 mark. Freshman 174 pounder Derek Sickel came out the victor in a challenging match against Brendon DeCock of Great Falls. Sickel defeated DeCock 6-2.
Redshirt senor Michael Arias also added a notch to the win column with his dominating victory over Greg Einerson of Portland State. The 141- pound Cadet improves to 11-6 on the season with four major decisions after defeating Einerson 11-3.
The Citadel’s junior 133 pounder Anthony Easter shut out two of his opponents on the day going 2-2. Easter first defeated Jason Harrington of Great Falls 6-0 and then recorded a major decision in his next bout. The Bulldog’s 12-0 victory over Southwestern Oregon’s John Sutten was Easters fist major decision of the season.
Other Bulldogs that competed for The Citadel in the tournament were 133-pound redshirt sophomore Mike Fenton (0-2), freshman Joe DeLisle at 184 pounds (0-2), redshirt senior John Buck a 197 pounds (0-2) and heavyweight redshirt junior Aaron Brown (0-2).
