WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Elon women's basketball teams used a 28-4 first-half run to jump out to an early lead and never looked back, outshooting Winston-Salem State 63.3 percent to 24.2 percent to claim a 71-36 non-conference road win Thursday night at C.E. Gaines Gymnasium.
Elon (4-5) was led by sophomore Amber Wall's 23 points, while junior Kitara McMoore supplied 12 and freshman Anna Dellapenta netted a career-high 10. Wall was one of three Phoenix players to lead the game with eight rebounds with teammates sophomore Urysla Cotton and senior Katie Whidden.
"It feels great to have a three-game winning streak going," said Phoenix head coach Brenda Paul. "This win should really help us as we get deeper into Southern Conference play."
The Phoenix sank 31-of-49 shots from the floor, while holding the Rams to just 16-made shots. Elon poured in 48 points in the paint, supplying 20 off of fast breaks, while WSSU scored 25 of its 36 points off of Phoenix turnovers.
Sophomore Tiffany Davis was 4-of-5 from the floor, dishing out four assists and grabbing five steals. McMoore and Wall each went 6-of-7 under the basket for Elon.
The Phoenix took a 32-15 lead to the locker room at the half, then used eight-straight points from McMoore and senior Nicole Allison to open the second frame and run the score to 40-15.
Winston-Salem State's Vontisha Woods netted a team-leading 12 points for the Rams, adding seven boards.
Elon takes to the road Saturday for a 3 p.m. SoCon tip-off at Furman.
