SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman has earned the top seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship and will host eighth-seeded Wofford Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the first round of the tournament. The Paladins (15-3-0, 7-0-0) completed an unbeaten regular season in conference play, claiming their first regular season title since 2002. Wofford (6-11-1, 0-7-0) enters the tournament on a hot streak after picking up two victories and the South Carolina/Tennessee Challenge championship over the weekend.
All eight league teams earn berths in the SoCon tournament with the top four seeds hosting the first round matches on either Saturday, November 10 or Sunday, November 11. The semifinal and championship rounds will be held at UNCG Soccer Stadium on the campus of UNC Greensboro Friday, November 16 and Sunday, November 18.
College of Charleston (12-4-1, 6-1-0) placed second in the SoCon during the regular season and will entertain Georgia Southern (6-10-0, 2-5-0), the tournament’s seventh seed, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
UNC Greensboro (8-7-2, 4-3-0), winner of the last two SoCon Men’s Soccer Championships, claimed the third seed this season. The Spartans will face sixth-seeded Davidson (4-12-1, 2-4-1) at 7:00 p.m. Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Davidson tied for fifth in the regular season with Appalachian State, but the Mountaineers earned the fifth seed due to their win over UNC Greensboro during the regular season. The winner of this match will face the winner of the Charleston/Georgia Southern battle in the second semifinal next Friday evening.
The final first round match will be between the number four and number five seeds, Elon (7-6-4, 4-3-0) and Appalachian State (6-9-3, 2-4-1). The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Elon, N.C. Elon and UNC Greensboro tied for third place in the SoCon standings, but the Spartans 3-0 victory over Elon on Saturday gave them the third seed in the conference tournament. The Elon/Appalachian State winner will take on either Furman or Wofford in the first semifinal match at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 16.
