BUIES CREEK , NC ? In their first dual meet of the season, the UNC Greensboro Spartans defeated the Campbell Fighting Camels, 31-12 at Carter Gymnasium in Buies Creek, NC. UNCG recorded three decisions, two falls, two major decisions, and one tech fall on the night.
The Fighting Camels opened the evening’s action with a win, but the Spartans came back to win the next seven out of nine matches
Senior Jeff Hedges won UNCG’s first match of the night in the 133-pound weight class with a 20-4 tech fall over Campbell’s Trevour Smith. He is undefeated so far this season with a 4-0 overall record.
UNCG won three in a row as freshman Andrew Saunders (125 lbs.) defeated Matt King in a 4-0 decision to move to a 4-2 record, senior Mark Ring (157 lbs.) pinned Jake Fose in 40 seconds to go to 3-1, and sophomore Byron Sigmon (165 lbs.) won his fourth match of the season with a 3:51 fall over Chris Mazzatta.
Sophomore Jeremy Cannon defeated Kyle Higgins in the 184-pound round with a 9-2 decision moving him to 3-1 overall, senior Daren Burns won his fourth match of the season with a 9-3 decision over Parker Burns at 197 lbs., and sophomore Ryan Hsu won a 17-7 major decision over Rob Yoder in the heavyweight class.
Sophomore Mitchell Johnson fell to the Fight Camel’s CJ Gittens in a close 10-9 decision. Johnson moves to an even 2-2 overall record.
Senior Andrew Krieger fell in an 8-5 decision against Kelin Bidelspach in the night’s 141-pound round. Krieger is now 2-3 on the season.
Freshman Mikal McKee dropped to an overall 4-2 record after falling to Dillon Landi in a 3:47 fall match.
“It was good for the guys to come out with a win like this in their first dual meet,” said head coach Jason Loukides. “Not only is this going to prepare our new guys and our veterans for the rest of the season, but it’s a good stepping stone to Vegas for all of them.”
Following the dual match, two Spartans, freshman Manuel Ramirez and sophomore Victor Hojilla took part in exhibition bouts. Ramirez defeated his opponent, RJ Mazzatta with a 16-5 major decision and Hojilla defeated Matthew Hawkswork with a 13-4 major decision.
The Spartans travel to Las Vegas, NV this weekend for the Cliff Keen Invitational. Competition is set to begin on Friday, November 30.
