The Citadel Open
Charleston, S.C. ? The Bulldog grapplers had five placers, including one champion, at The Citadel Open. Freshman Paul Sanford went 4-0 on the day while sophomore Derek Royster, and freshmen Brendan Prince, Derek Sickel and Ivan Muller all recorded only one loss during the action in McAlister Field House on Sunday.
With two falls and two decisions, Sanford took the 125-pound title. An 8-6 decision over Spartanburg Methodists Wilson Frazier advanced the freshman to the championship quarter-finals where he faced Russle Hilton of UNC Pembroke. Sanford recorded his first collegiate fall late in the third period at the 5:23 mark. Fall number two came in the first period of the semi-finals match against Sanford’s second Spartanburg Methodist opponent of the tournament, Michael Boring, a mere 41 seconds into the bout. Sanford went out to an early lead in 125-pound finals match, and was able to hang on for the win and tournament title.
149-pound Bulldog Derek Royster went 3-1 on the day placing second in the tournament. Royster pinned Troy Baranik of St. Andrews Presbyterian at the three minute mark in the opening round of action. His final two victories came in the form of decisions over George Mason’s Aaron Keeton 3-2 and the No. 1 seed Tim Burdine of Spartanburg Methodist 6-5.
Brendan Prince was the third placer for the Bulldogs as he went 4-1 to take third place in the 165-pound weight class. After loosing a first round battle 6-5 to Virginia’s Brent Fiorito, Prince went on to win four straight duals averaging 10.5 points per bout.
Derek Sickel started his run in the tournament with a fall in the second period of his first round match against Jerry Ochoa of NC State at the 3:08 mark. After a 5-2 loss to Duke’s Turner Rooney in the semi-finals, Sickel came back to defeat Andre Adams from UNC Pembroke 12-2 in the consolation semi-finals. Racking up the bonus points, the 165-pound freshman pinned Ochoa for a second time in 1:41 to place third.
Ivan Muller earned his three victories over two UNC Pembroke heavyweights. Muller faced off against Erik Stancil in the first round of the tournament where he won the decision 7-3. Duke’s Wade VanSickle narrowly defeated Muller in the championship semi-finals 2-0, forcing him into the consolation bracket where he faced his second UNC Pembroke opponent Chad Davis. The Citadel grappler defeated Davis 3-0 before outlasting Stancil for the second time in the tournament to take third place with a 3-1 record.
Other Bulldogs that competed in the tournament were freshmen Kip Thompson (1-2) and Kevin Ciccone (1-2) and redshirt-sophomore Mike Fenton (0-2) at 133 pounds, freshmen Casey Underwood (0-2) at 165 pounds, J.C. Oddo (1-2) at 174 pounds, Brian Hurley (1-2), Cy Edelson (1-2) and Joe DeLisle (1-2) at 184 pounds.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Pembroke Open and will continue their dual meet season on Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. in McAlister Field House when they will face Limestone.
