SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today the Athletes of the Month for September. One athlete is chosen from each fall sport: football (offensive and defensive), men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and men’s and women’s golf.
Football
Offense
Elon’s freshmen quarterback Scott Riddle earned Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors three out of the four weeks in October. Riddle led the Phoenix to a 4-0 in October and a 6-2 record overall,4-1 in the Southern Conference. He led Elon to its highest national-ranking ever in the FCS. In October, Riddle completed 133-of-195 passes for 1,359 yards and 13 with three interceptions. He had a passing rating of 145.67 with 317.8 yards per game. Riddle established a Elon single-season records with 254 completions, 23 touchdowns, 2,606 passing yards and responsible for 28 touchdowns. He is the only Southern Conference player to ever throw for 300 yards or more in seven games in the same season. Riddle leads the conference in completions with 31.8, second in total passing with 2,606, third in passing yards per game with 325.8, fourth in points responsible for with 21.5 and fifth in total offense with 319.4 yards.
Defense
Chattanooga’s Chris Camacho averaged 15.8 tackles per game in October. Chris had three games with double-figure tackles to extend his streak to five. At Arkansas, he registered a career-high with 18 tackles including 12 solo. In a win over Western Carolina, Camacho had 11 tackles and a safety. His safety was Chattanooga’s third in three straight games. At Furman, he compiled 15 solo and two assists and against Elon Chris had seven tackles and recovered a fumble. For October he had 63 tackles with 46 solo and 17 assists.
Men’s Soccer
Corbin Waller, a senior goalkeeper for College of Charleston helped the Cougars to a 5-2 record in October. Waller allowed five goals in 640 minutes and had 35 saves with a percentage of .875. He had four shutouts in October to increase his conference-leading shutouts to nine. Waller had a goals against average of .70 in October to rank him third in the conference for goals against. Waller is third in the conference in save percentage and second in saves.
Women’s Soccer
Kelly Attayek, a sophomore midfielder at UNC Greensboro has been influential in the Spartans 22- game Southern Conference unbeaten streak and their 19 game regular season unbeaten streak. Attayek, started all four games in October and tallied five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points. She had the game- winner against Furman and scored a goal against College of Charleston to give UNC Greensboro its second consecutive regular season title. She had a shot 27 shots for a shot on goal percentage of .444.
Volleyball
Brittany Zahn, a outside hitter for Appalachian State, tallied 5.76 kills per game in October. Zahn was named player of the week twice in October. She had 236 kills, 109 digs, 21 blocks and a hitting percentage of .287. Zahn average 6.2 points per game and totaled 254 points during October. She set consecutive career highs in kills with 34 against Elon and then toppled it the next day with 36 kills against UNC Greensboro. Zahn had three matches with 30 or more kills and five games with 20 or more kills. She had five games with a hitting percentage above .318. She helped lead the Mountaineers to a 10-1 record and 9-1 in Southern Conference play.
Men’s Golf
Chattanooga’s Jonathan Hodge, a junior on the Mocs men’s golf team, finished second in the VCU Shootout with a career best 10-under par 206. Hodge got his first career win the following week at the Coca-Cola Duke Classic. He carded rounds of five under par for a 67 in both opening and closing rounds. He had a two under par 70 in between to establish a career best of 12 under par 204. Hodges victory gave the Mocs a share of the team title. His stroke average for the month was 69, he is currently 43rd in the nation in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and 21st in the nation versus par.
Women’s Golf
Emma de Groot, a freshman from Chattanooga, helped lead the Lady Mocs to a win at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate, tied for third at the LPGA International Xavier Invitational and tied for 11th at the Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate. Emma finished second at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate with a three round score of 223, ninth at the LPGA Invitational Xavier Invitational with a three round total of 225 and sixth at the Palmetto Intercollegiate with back-to-back 73’s to total 222.
