Appalachian State 5, The Citadel 0
Charleston, S.C.- Despite a hard fought match, The Citadel Bulldogs lose to Appalachian State, 5-0, in the regular season finale in Southern Conference action.
The first half of the game proved to be a defensive battle until Appalachian State scored in the 40th minute of play when Courtney O-Brien crossed the ball to Caroline Lowe, who then volleyed the ball past Bulldog goalkeeper Emily Green.
The Citadel’s best to score in the first half came in the 35th minute when Jessa Scott and Dianna Martin combined for a give and go in the box. An open Martin, then found Dominic Snyder whose shot was saved by Appalachian State goalkeeper Emma White
Coming out of halftime, the Mountaineers got a quick goaal when Carella DiMaggion capitalized off a Citadel defensive error to notch the second goal of the contest.
The Bulldog offense kept the pressure on, but after back to back corner kicks in the 80th minute The Citadel remained scoreless.
The Mountaineers struck again when Shannon Healy took a shot that deflected off a Citadel defender and went into the right corner of the net. Just minutes later DiMaggio found an open Lauren Bouffard who placed the ball out of reach of Green. The final goal of the match came when Lindsay Tally took a shot from the left corner of the field and barley skimmed by the inside post.
The Citadel had three players get a shot off. Dominic Snyder, Vivi Brown and Nicole Martinoli all created legitimate scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs.
Green stopped the ball seven times in the net while White notched two saves for the Mountaineers and Caroline Clark had one save.
The Bulldogs have ended the season, 3-16,0, 0-10 while the Mountaineers improved to 10-5-3, 4-5-1.
UNC Greensboro 3, Elon 0
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team went undefeated in the Southern Conference for the second season in a row as they shutout the Elon Phoenix, 3-0, Thursday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium to close out the regular season.
The Spartans (13-3-1, 10-0-0 SoCon) nabbed the title and the shutout after out-shooting the Phoenix 24-8. UNCG also held an 8-1 corner kick advantage. With the loss, Elon drops to 5-11-2 overall with a 3-6-1 SoCon record.
The evening began with a tribute to UNCG’s three senior members. Keeper Katherine Ryan, midfielder Karla Davis, and forward/midfielder Jessica Patterson were all acknowledged for their achievements in the past four years. These three teammates close out their collegiate regular season with an overall record of 50-23-5, with a SoCon record of 34-4-2, three SoCon regular-season titles, and an appearance at the NCAA tournament.
The short celebration preempted a Spartan scoring drive as sophomore Jennifer Bronson got UNCG on the board with a one-touch goal just six minutes in. Junior Katelynn Donovan gave a quick feed to Davis who was able to cross it in front of the goal from the left side. Bronson got a foot on it to score her second goal of the season.
UNCG’s second goal came just five minutes after the first as Donovan launched a long corner kick into the box. Senior Jamie Corti charged the net and rammed a header just past the hands of Elon keeper Lizz Johnson for her first goal of the season.
Freshman Jenn Partenheimer put the Spartans up 3-0 with a little over five minutes remaining in the game as freshman Jen Rincon gave a quick touch at the top of box. Partenheimer danced through a few Phoenix defenders before splitting two to put the ball in from 10 yards. The goal was her fourth of the season.
Ryan wrapped-up three saves on the night while Elon’s Johnson tallied 11.
With the win, the Spartans extend their conference regular-season unbeaten streak to 20 with an overall unbeaten streak of 23.
“Not only was it great to end with a win and an unbeaten record, but what a night to do so,” said head coach Eddie Radwanski, “Our three seniors have worked hard these past four years and they deserved to end their career on a positive note.”
“Elon is not an easy opponent...they didn’t just lie down and let things happen. They played hard and fought even harder...the fact that we came out with a shutout speaks volumes for our team.”
Defender Jamie Corti was named the Greg Harrison UNCG Player of the Game.
The Spartans will have just two day’s rest before meeting with Elon once again at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The two teams will square-off for the quarter-final game of the Southern Conference Tournament at 2pm.
Radwanski commented, “We start a whole new season come tomorrow. Just because we play a team we’ve already beaten doesn’t mean we can go in there unprepared. This tournament is completely different than the regular season and if we want a win and a championship, we’re going to have to earn it.”

Furman 8, Chattanooga 0
Greenville, S.C. -- The Furman women’s soccer team celebrated senior night with an 8-0 blanking of Chattanooga in the regular season finale for both teams Thursday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The win improved Furman to 13-5-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the SoCon while the Lady Mocs fell to 2-12-2 overall and 2-7-1 in the league.
After several near misses and three shots off of the post in the early going, Rachel Fry opened the scoring barrage for Furman in the 28th minute. Gena Villari unleashed a shot from the left side of the box that bounced off of the near post and into the path of Fry who tapped home her ninth goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Anna Betton found Margaret Antonik on a diagonal run and the midfielder beat UTC keeper Milla Junni top shelf to give Furman a 2-0 lead at the half.
Katie Tucker and Sara El-Shami put their names on the score sheet with goals just 30 second apart early in the second half. Tucker collected a loose ball in the box and slipped a shot past the keeper for her eight tally of the year at 48:57. El-Shami followed at 49:27 running onto a Betton pass on the left wing and chipping a shot over Junni’s head into the far corner.
Fry stretched the lead to 5-0 with her second goal of the night at 53:39. The junior controlled a loose ball at the top of the box and lined a low shot into the right side of the net. Betton followed with her league-leading 13th goal of the night in the 77th minute stealing the ball from a defender and scoring from 12 yards out.
Olivia Dashiell came off of the bench to notch her third goal of the year at 82:30. Emily Krankowski lined a shot off of the post and Dashiell finished the rebound at the far post to up the lead to 7-0. A late own goal off of a corner kick capped the scoring.
Furman outshot the Lady Mocs 32-4 and held a 20-0 edge in shots on goal. Furman took eight corner kicks while holding Chattanooga without an attempt all night.
Junni made 11 saves for the Lady Mocs. Briana da Mota and Claire Richards split time in goal for Furman and were not forced into a save.
The victory locked up the third seed for Furman in upcoming Southern Conference Tournament. The Lady Paladins will play host to sixth-seed Appalachian State in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal round match on Sunday afternoon at Stone Stadium. Furman downed the Mountaineers 4-3 in Boone, N.C., during the regular season.
Davidson 2, Georgia Southern 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. After finishing out the month of October with four straight wins, the Davidson women's soccer team continue their winning ways by starting out November with a 2-0 Southern Conference victory over Georgia Southern behind the strong play of sophomore Blakey Low (San Antonio, Texas) on Thursday night at Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats concluded the regular-season on a five-match winning streak to push their overall mark to 13-4-1 and finish league play at 8-1-1. GSU dropped to 3-12-2 overall and 2-6-2 in the SoCon.
The win for the 'Cats tonight helped them avenge a 1-0 loss to the Eagles in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament last year.
Davidson, who clinched the number two seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament, will now play host to Wofford on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in the quarterfinals. Wofford tied Elon for seventh place, but won the tie-breaker by virtue of a 2-1 win over the Phoenix in the regular season.
Prior to the game, Davidson honored its three seniors and tri-captains, Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.), Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) and Kristen Koehrn (La Mesa, Calif.). The trio are currently the winningest class in program history as they have helped Davidson go 50-25-6 during their four-year careers.
But on a night in which the seniors were honored, it was a duo from the sophomore class who assured their older teammates that the future will be in good hands. Sophomores Low and Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.) each scored a goal, and Low assisted on the second goal to lead Davidson to its fourth straight shutout win, and school-record tying 10th of the season.
Low kicked in the eventual game-winner in the 38th minute on a break-away.
Freshman Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) started the play when she feed a through ball in the middle of the field to a streaking Low, who slipped by the Eagle defense and broke for the ball. After gathering in the pass, she drove into the box and struck a right-footed shot to the near post for her fifth score of the season and a 1-0 lead.
GSU got off only two shots in the first half as it was forced to drop most of its players back to stop the Wildcat attack, which got off 13 shots in the half and 19 for the game.
Sittko then kicked in an insurance goal at the start of the second half.
Four minutes into the new period at the 49:18 mark, the sophomore got a through ball from Low just past midfield on the near side where she then got off a shot from the right to the back post for her fifth goal of the season and the final score of 2-0.
The Eagles did pick up three more shots on the evening, placing all three on goal, but English was there to stop all three shots as she recorded her SoCon-best 10th shutout.
Laura-Ashley Harris finished the night with 10 saves as Davidson placed 12 of the their 19 shots on goal.
Davidson opens the SoCon Tournament with a matchup against Wofford, whom the Wildcats tied earlier this season, on Sunday at 3 p.m.
