SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Following Furman’s upset of top-seed UNC Greensboro in the final of the 2007 Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship, the NCAA has rewarded both programs with bids to the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.
Furman will travel to face No. 15 Tennessee in Knoxville on Friday night. The Lady Vols are 13-4-2 on the season but are in the midst of a two-match losing streak in which they have been outscored 5-0. The Lady Paladins, who enter the NCAA Tournament at 16-5-1, are making their first postseason appearance since a 2-0 loss to Tennessee in 2004.
UNC Greensboro, the Southern Conference regular season champion in 2007 after going a perfect 10-0 in league play, will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. and will battle Memphis on Friday. The Tigers (17-3-1) enter the tournament fresh off of claiming the Conference USA tournament championship by shutting out three consecutive opponents. UNC Greensboro is 15-4-1 on the season and is making its second-consecutive trip to the Big Dance and seventh in the past 11 seasons.
The selection of both Furman and UNC Greensboro to the NCAA Tournament marks the first time since 2000 that multiple SoCon teams have played in the postseason.
