Southern Conference Football Honorees for Oct. 8

Offensive Player of the Week

Elon quarterback Scott Riddle (Ramseur, N.C.) was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The freshman threw for 354 yards on 30-for-45 passing with four touchdowns as Elon beat Western Carolina, 38-36.  Riddle has passed for more than 300 yards in four straight games. He leads the nation in completions (30.2 per game), is fourth in passing yards (320.2 yards per game) and is sixth in total yards (321.8 yards per game).

Defensive Player of the Week

Furman free safety Thomas Twitty (Birmingham, Ala.) earned Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. The junior registered a career-high 17 tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up another in Furman’s 27-17 win over Coastal Carolina. The Furman defense limited Coastal Carolina to minus-2 yards rushing and 77 total yards in the second half at the Paladins rallied from a 14-10 deficit for the victory.

Freshman of the Week

Georgia Southern place kicker Jesse Hartley (Tallahassee, Fla.) was named Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The junior booted a game-winning 54-yard field goal as time expired to lead Georgia Southern to a 41-38 victory over visiting South Dakota State. Hartley also converted a 24-yard field goal and was 5-for-5 on extra points to finish with 11 points in the contest.

Freshman of the Week

Western Carolina quarterback Adam Hearns (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week. Hearns accounted for four touchdowns (three passing and one rushing). He completed 21-of-41 passes for 310 yards to become the first Catamount to pass for more than 300 yard since 2004. Hearns also rushed for 105 yards including a career-best 30-yard rush.
