UNC Greensboro 4, Wofford 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A pair of goals in each half was enough as visiting UNC Greensboro earned a 4-0 Southern Conference men's soccer victory Saturday evening against Wofford at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
The three-time defending league regular-season champion Spartans spent no time putting their first tally on the board. Travis Young sent a long pass down the right flank to Thomas Campbell, who then sent a cross in front of the goal to a waiting Tebatso Manyama for the game's first score at 1:11.
The visitors' second mark on the scoreboard came at 8:49. Young fired an initial shot, which deflected off a Terrier defender right to Manyama who then put in the rebound.
Manyama was at it again with Campbell on the third UNCG (5-4-2, 1-2 SoCon) goal. He sent a cross to Campbell, who stalled for a few seconds, freezing the Wofford defense before putting the ball past goalkeeper Joey Taylor at 56:01.
The final score was also recorded by Campbell. Another ricochet, this time on a Tim Masters shot which hit the left post, found Campbell's feet and then the back of the net at 71:22.
The Terriers' best chance to score came with 13 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Branson Hyatt nearly poked one into the near post on the left flank but his shot to the upper left corner was juggled by goalie Nate Berry.
Campbell finished with a game-high seven shots, including five on goal. Freshman Kentrel Owens paced Wofford (2-7-1, 0-3 SoCon) with three shots.
Berry tallied two saves in playing the full 90 minutes for the shutout. Taylor collected six saves before giving way to sophomore Thomas Hunter for the final 10:43. Hunter stopped one Spartan attempt.
All players available for both teams saw action, including the first collegiate playing time for Terrier freshman Scott Redding.
Wofford will return to the field when it travels to Greenville, S.C., for a 6 p.m. Tuesday meeting with Furman.
#22 Furman 5, Davidson 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson fell to SoCon rival and No. 22 Furman 5-1 in men's soccer action Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium. The setback was the sixth straight for the Wildcats dropping them to 1-9-0 and 0-2-0 in the league, while Furman improves to 10-1-0 and remains unbeaten in the conference moving to 3-0-0.
The nationally-ranked Paladins wasted little time grabbing the early 1-0 advantage when Erik Baffour tracked down a deflected cross and fired a shot into the open frame. Baffour's eighth minute score and team-leading seventh of the slate was set up by Harris Cekic.
Shortly after Baffour put the game's first goal on the board, he just missed extending the Paladins' lead as his blast from 15 yards, caromed off the left post.
The Wildcats' best chance in the opening period came in the 41st minute when Robby Hoak's free kick from just outside the box was turned away by Furman goalkeeper Bryon Amos.
Furman's Takato Ban made it a 2-0 contest in the 56th minute with a rip from 25 yards out following an attempted clear by a Wildcat defender.
After Ban netted his first score of the 2007 season, Furman added two quick goals from Dane Roberts and Curt McDonald in the 70th and 74th minutes, respectively, to extend its margin to 4-0.
Despite playing a man down following a McDonald red card, the Paladins continued their scoring when Rob Victor put away his one-on-one chance with Davidson's keeper.
With just 6:10 remaining in regulation, Davidson finally got on the board when freshman Alex Caskey recorded his first collegiate strike with a boot from just outside the 18-yard box.
The Paladins held a 14-10 advantage in shots. Amos made five saves for Furman, while the Wildcats' Robby Goldsberry stopped two.
Davidson returns to action in a 7 p.m. kickoff at league rival UNC Greensboro Tuesday evening. The Paladins host Wofford Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
Elon 4, Appalachian State 0
ELON, N.C. ? Goals from four different Elon players, including three second half scores, lifted the Phoenix to a 4-0 Southern Conference men’s soccer victory over the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers in front of 509 fans from Rudd Field on Saturday night. With the win, Elon improved to 6-2-3 overall and 3-0-0 in league action. The Phoenix has also now gone unbeaten in eight consecutive games, the third longest streak in school history and just shy of two such streaks of 11 games (1985 and 1987). Appalachian State dropped to 6-2-3, 2-1-0.
Daniel Street’s first goal of the season put the Phoenix on top 1-0 at the 38:24 mark, the only score of the first period. The tally was set up as Douglas Boateng fed Justin Wyatt who booted it on to Street on the far left of the goal. Street then sent a low shot back across the box to the right side of the frame for the marker.
In the second half, Elon opened the floodgates at the 59:48 mark when Chris Leko took a pass from Street who had received a long ball from Will Mason and Leko beat Greg Walters for the score, his second of the year. At 71:52 the Phoenix advantage grew to 3-0 as Wyatt netted his seventh score of the campaign. Aaron Parker and Brett Paschall assisted on the score by Wyatt who has now scored a goal in four consecutive games.
Elon’s final goal came off the foot of Aaron Parker who raced through the Appalachian State defense and beat Walters one-on-one.
“To get a result like this in conference play takes a total team effort,” said assistant coach Jason O’Keefe. “It was a total team effort tonight. We’re excited to get back to work tomorrow and get ready for a big conference game at Charleston.”
Walters, who entered the night with a 0.83 GAA, allowed all four goals while making five saves in his 90 minutes of action. Elon’s Clint Irwin picked up his fourth shutout of the year by stopping four ASU shots. Irwin improved his GAA to 0.69.
The Phoenix has allowed just two goals during its eight-match unbeaten streak.
The Phoenix outshot the Mountaineers by a 17-10 margin overall and 9-4 on goal. Elon also earned seven corners to four for Appalachian State.
Up next for Elon is a trip to College of Charleston on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Appalachian State will visit Wake Forest at 7:00 p.m. that same evening.
Winthrop 2, College of Charleston 1 (OT)
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Sean Weron scored the golden goal in the first period of over time to lift the Winthrop Eagles over the College of Charleston men’s soccer team, 2-1 at Patriots Point Field.
The win brings the Eagles record to 6-2-1, while the Cougars fall to 6-3-1.
The first half of the match ended with no score. Cougar defenders Ryan Kell and Doug Edwards helped hold the Eagles to just one shot in the first 45 minutes of play. CofC ended the half with four shots.
The Cougars came close to scoring first when Matt Morris headed a ball into the net only to have it called back due to a foul.
In the 49th minute Miquel Casajuana scored from the penalty stripe to put the Eagles up 1-0.
After a Winthrop foul, just eight yards into Eagle territory, midfielder Grant Guthrie took a free kick for the Cougars. Morris headed the ball from six yards in front of the net to tie the score at 1-1 (62:56).
The second half proved to be intense and physical. There was a combined total of 40 fouls and CofC received three cautions during the match.
In the 101st minute, Winthrop midfielder Weron gained control of the ball deep in the Cougar penalty box and booted it into the net for the golden goal.
The Cougars held a 16-12 shot advantage. Morris and Kareem Yearwood led the team with three shots each. Justin Fojo, Drew Fuzy and Guthrie took three shots, while Wes Knight, Edwards and Branko Gavric each had one.
Eagle goalie Patrick Mitrovich had 10 saves for the evening, while Corbin Waller made four saves for CofC.
CofC begins Southern Conference play Tues., Oct. 9, at 6 when it hosts the Elon Phoenix at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
