Davidson 1, Furman 0

Greenville, S.C. -- Amanda Flink scored on a header off of Nancy Haskell’s corner kick in the 10th minute as Davidson blanked Furman 1-0 in Southern Conference women’s soccer action Thursday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The loss snapped Furman’s four-match winning streak and dropped the Lady Paladins to 8-4-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.  Davidson extended its winning streak to six matches while improving to 7-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the SoCon.

“We competed well tonight, but Davidson took advantage of its set pieces and got the early goal,” said Furman head coach Andrew Burr.  “They are a solid team and deserve the credit for playing a full 90 minutes.”

Davidson earned the early corner after putting pressure on the Lady Paladin defense down the left flank and Flink redirected the cross into the lower, right hand corner for the match’s only goal.

Furman had several chances to equalize, but could not break through.  Gena Villari ran onto a pass and line a bending shot wide of the right post near the game’s midway point.  Later in the second half, on an indirect free kick from inside the 18, Villari blasted a shot into the wall, but Davidson cleared the danger before Furman could pounce on the rebound.

Lady Paladin keeper Briana da Mota kept Furman in the game with a flurry of saves with just under 19 minutes remaining.  Kyri Bye-Nagel lined a shot off of the left post and Kristen Koehrn followed with a point-blank follow, but da Mota kicked the shot wide and Tiffany Mumby’s rebound flashed wide of the post.

Da Mota notched seven saves in the loss while Wildcat keeper Bevin English stopped five shots.  The Wildcats outshot Furman 10-8.

Furman looks to return to the win column Sunday when it travels to Appalachian State for a 4 p.m. contest against the Mountaineers. Davidson hosts Francis Marion in non-conference action Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

In the first of several first-half attempts, CofC midfielder Katie Browne gained possession of the ball at midfield and booted it inside to Schneider. She crossed the ball inside to Julie Romanik who took a shot only to be stopped by Eagles goalie Lauren Santos.

In the 22nd minute, Schneider passed a ball from the right side into midfielder Christy Barrow.  Barrow took a shot directly in front of the goal from eight yards out for the game-winning goal.
