College of Charleston 2, Georgia Southern 0
STATESBORO, Ga. ? In its final home game of the season, the Georgia Southern men’s soccer team matched a tough College of Charleston, Tuesday evening (Oct. 30) at Eagle Field, but fell in a 2-0 Southern Conference decision.
The Eagles fall to 6-10-0 on the season, 2-5-0 in SoCon play, while College of Charleston improves to 11-4-1 overall and 5-1-0 in league games.
College of Charleston got up on the scoreboard in the 25th minute when Kareem Yearwood received a through ball up the left side to take a strike eight yards out.
Georgia Southern put up six shots in the first half but was unable to capitalize on its opportunities and notch the equalizer.
Both teams went into the locker room with a 1-0 Charleston lead. At the break, the Cougars held an 8-6 advantage in shots, while GSU tallied a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Over the next 42 minutes the Eagles maintained a constant offensive attack, but were unable to find the back of the net.
It wasn’t until the 87th minute that Charleston’s Zach Prince added the Cougars’ second goal for insurance, shooting from 20 yards out, and giving his team the 2-0 lead.
“Hats off to Charleston,” said head coach Kevin Kennedy. “They’ve had a great season. They’ve worked for each other and they capitalized on the opportunities today.”
The Cougars outshot the Eagles 18-11 on the day, while Georgia Southern held a decisive 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Julian Donaldson (Aurora, Colo.) and freshman Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) each tallied a team-high three shots.
“I thought Julian (Donaldson) had another good game for us,” said Kennedy. “He was dangerous for us. As a team, we just need to finish our opportunities.”
In the cage fulltime was sophomore Joey Ralph (Martinez, Ga.) who made seven saves. Cougar keeper Corbin Waller made six saves on the day for the win.
“I thought Joey (Ralph) had another good performance,” said Kennedy. “He made some big saves for us. Overall we just have to be more consistent.”
The Eagles will play their last game of the regular season against non-conference foe Stetson. The game, to be played at Stetson Soccer Complex in DeLand, Fla., is slated for Tuesday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. Charleston concludes its regular season schedule with a match at Davidson Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Radford 2, Elon 1 (2OT)
RADFORD, Va. -- The Elon Phoenix men's soccer squad rallied back from a one goal deficit only to see the host Radford Highlanders net the game-winning score with just 3:13 remaining in the second overtime period to pull out a 2-1 non-conference victory on Tuesday night. With the victory, Radford improved to 9-6-0 while Elon fell to 7-5-4.
Following a scorelss first half of play, during which the Phoenix outshot the Highlanders 7-1 overall and 3-1 on goal, Radford netted the game's first goal at 51:57. Trevor MacBrien flicked home his first goal of the season on assists Daryn Patricio and Davori Husadzinovic. Patricio started the play with a corner kick.
Brett Paschall's seventh goal of the year evened the score at 1-1 at 70:45. His marker was unassisted and was a blast from 30 yards out.
The remainder of the second half was scoreless as was the first 10 minute overtime period. Husadzinovic ended the game at 106:47 with his team-leading sixth goal of the year. It was an unassisted tally.
In goal, Kyle Boerner stopped three shots for the Phoenix. His counterpart, Zach Roszel, collected six saves as Elon outshot Radford 15-8 overall and 7-5 on goal.
Elon will return home to take on UNC Greensboro on Saturday, November 3 at 7 p.m. from Rudd Field. Prior to the game, which will be for seeding in the upcoming Southern Conference tournament, the Phoenix will honor its five seniors.
#3 Virginia Tech 5, Appalachian State 0
BOONE, N.C. - On a beautiful autumn afternoon, the Appalachian State men’s soccer team dropped a stinging 5-0 defeat to the No. 3 Virginia Tech Hokies. The appearance of the Hokies on the Mountain is the first for an ACC member since 1992 when North Carolina visited Boone. Appalachian falls to 6-8-3 while Virginia Tech improves to 9-1-5.
The first 35 minutes were scoreless as both teams felt each other out. The Hokies struck first with a Johnathan Collier goal in the 36th minute. The scoring play opened with a corner kick from Brent Hooper delivered to the near post. Stefan Hock flicked the ball parallel with the goal to Collier at the far post. Virginia Tech led 1-0 going into halftime
In the second half, the Hokies struck quickly with a Scott Dillie goal off a blocked shot to push the lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute. Scott Spangler took the blocked shot to assist on the goal. Six minutes later, Clarke Bentley extended the lead to 3-0 as he stuffed home a rebound from a Collier shot. The 54th minute goal was his first of the season.
In the 65th minute Bently struck again from six yards as he pushed across a pass from Ben Nason. The goal put Virginia Tech up 4-0. In the 76th minute Dillie found Robert Edmans open on a breakaway putting him in position to score his sixth goal of the season. Edman’s goal put the Hokies up 5-0.
Senior Greg Walters earned the start in goal for ASU, making three saves and allowing four goals in 68 minutes of action. Junior Tyler Smith relieved Walters and plated the remaining 22 minutes allowing one goal and making no saves.
Appalachian State will close out the regular season on Sunday, November 4 at home against UNC Asheville. ASU will honor the six seniors that will play their final home match prior to the 2:00 p.m. kick-off. Admission is free to the ASU Soccer Stadium.
