Cullowhee, N.C. ? Appalachian State men’s cross country team won the conference championship by placing seven runners in the top 10 and Chattanooga women’s cross country teams won by placing five runners in the top 16.  Appalachian State’s Brian Deal crossed the finish line first with a time of 25:07.78 and received Runner of the Year honors.  Chattanooga’s Kathleen Turchin ran 17:30.35 to take the top spot along with the Runner of the Year Award.

Chattanooga ended with 44 points followed closely by Davidson with 53 points.  Furman came in third with 83 points, Appalachian State in fourth with 86 points, Elon in fifth with 104 points, Western Carolina in sixth with 141 points, College of Charleston in seventh with 171 points, The Citadel in eighth with 241 points, UNC Greensboro in ninth with 263 points, Georgia Southern in tenth with 311 points and Wofford eleventh with 322.

Kathleen Turchin won the women’s race with a time of 17:30.35; Turchin was followed by Caroline Sanker who finished the course in second place with a time of 17:37.28.  Jennifer Povick of Appalachian State was third with a finishing time of 17:59.84 and Elon’s Caitlin Beeler was fourth with a time of 18:00.77.  Brenna Burns finished fifth and clocked in at 18:09.66, followed by Katie Williams in sixth who ran 18:19.88.  Megal Atias from Davidson placed seventh with a time of 18:20.31. Freshmen-of-the-Year, Jenna Callahan, placed eighth running 18:23.10.  Kerrie Savery of Western Carolina was ninth with a time of 18:26.34 and rounding out the top 10 is Shelly Taylor with a time of 18:26.63.

Appalachian State men’s team placed first with 27 points, Chattanooga in second with 56 points, Furman finished third with 86 points, Davidson came in fourth with 143 points, UNC Greensboro finished fifth with 146 points, Elon placed sixth with 152 points, Western Carolina came in seventh with 158 points, The Citadel finished eighth with 220 points, College of Charleston placed ninth with 221 points and Wofford finished tenth with 282 points.

Runner-of-the-Year, Brian Deal finished the course with a time of 25:07.78.  Furman’s Patrick Morgan was second with a time of 25:16.18 and Michael Mentz from Chattanooga was seconds behind Morgan with a time of 25:18.86.  Freshmen-of-the-Year, Chris Berry came in fourth with a time of 25:19.66.  Appalachian State’s Asmeron Desta placed fifth with a time of 25:20.73 and Mark Maddox came in sixth with a time of 25:22.92.  Alex Meyer from Appalachian State finished in seventh with a time of 25:37.42 and Blair Teal came in ninth with a time of 25:45.16.  Phil Mitchell rounds out the top 10 with a time of 24:46.91.

Mike Curcio of Appalachian State and Bill Gautier of Chattanooga won the Cross Country Coach-of-the ?Year awards.
