College of Charleston 3, Chattanooga 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? The Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to the College of Charleston in Southern Conference action Sunday afternoon at the North River Soccer Complex.
The Cougars scored late in the first half to go up 1-0. Megan Manthey and Julie Romanik set up a goal by Brittany Schneider at the 36:04 mark. The Chattanooga defense would hold off any more scores the remainder of the half.
In the second half, Charleston added a pair of insurance goals. One third of the way into the second stanza, Kerry Broderick beat out the Chattanooga defense and sent a shot into the back of the net to put the Cougars up 2-0 at the 62:36 mark of the game. With just over 10 minutes to play, Julie Romanik took a pass from Megan Matheny off a Danielle Jordan corner kick for the final margin.
Charleston outshot the Lady Mocs 19-6 and held a 10-2 shots on goal margin. Freshman UTC keeper grabbed seven saves in 90 minutes and Cougar keeper Sarah Wiggers had just one. The Lady Mocs fall to 1-10-2 and 1-5-1 in league action while second-place College of Charleston improves to 9-6-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the SoCon.
Chattanooga will host The Citadel Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the North River Complex. The home finale will be Sunday against Davidson at 2:00 p.m. The Cougars host Furman Friday at 7:00 p.m.
UNC Greensboro 2, Furman 0
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Kelly Attayek and Mary Kate Towne netted goals to lead UNC Greensboro past Furman 2-0 in Southern Conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The loss dropped Furman to 11-5-0 overall and 5-2-0 in league play while the Spartans improved to 10-3-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the SoCon. The win extended UNCG’s SoCon unbeaten streak to 20 matches.
Attayek put the Spartans on top with the eventual game-winner at 35:14.
Heather Mitrisin sent a corner kick into the box. A scramble followed and Attayek collected the loose ball and beat keeper Briana da Mota to give UNCG a 1-0 advantage.
Furman created several chances during the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Freshman Graham Marchman accounted for the Lady Paladins’ best opportunity with 12 minutes remaining. Sara El-Shami played a diagonal pass to Marchman on the left side and the Sharpsburg, Ga., product bent a shot inside the far post, but she was whistled for being offside.
UNCG capitalized on Furman pushing for a late goal when Towne stepped in front of a pass and side stepped the last defender before scoring the Spartans’ second goal with just 12 seconds remaining.
UNCG held a 13-10 edge in shots attempted and 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Katherine Ryan notched the win while stopping five Lady Paladin shots. Da Mota recorded four saves for the Lady Paladins.
Furman returns to action Friday when it travels to face the College of Charleston in a 7 p.m. contest at Patriots Point. The Spartans look to continue their unbeaten conference season when they host Appalachian State Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
Wofford 2, Elon 1
ELON, N.C. The visiting Wofford Terriers got a goal with just under six minutes remaining in regulation to knock off the Elon Phoenix 2-1 in Southern Conference women?s soccer action from Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon. The victory pushed Wofford?s overall record to 6-8-2 and their SoCon mark to 2-4-1. Elon dropped to 5-9-1, 3-4-0 on the campaign.
Erika Bishop headed home the game-winner at 84:14 off a corner from Rachel Hyatt. It was the first marker of the year for Bishop. The attempt was just one of four total shots and two shots on goal for the Terriers in the second half of play.
Wofford took an early 1-0 lead when Whitney Steelman netted her fifth goal of the season at 3:47. Natalie Ferrara was credited with the assist after crossing the ball from the right side to the left to Steelman whose shot sailed past Elon?s Lizz Johnson.
The contest remained 1-0 until 66:40 when Katina Boozer settled a corner from Katie Persichini and beat Katie McChesney with a shot that banked in off the bottom of the crossbar. The tally was Boozer?s team-leading seventh of the year.
Elon had more chances than Wofford in the second stanza, getting off 10 shots, three of which were on frame. Numerous others were just wide or high.
For the game, Elon outshot Wofford 15-13, but the Terriers put eight shots on goal to five for the Phoenix. Elon earned six corner kicks to four for Wofford.
Johnson finished the afternoon with six saves while McChesney grabbed four stops.
The Phoenix will pay a visit to Davidson on Thursday at 7 p.m. while Wofford visits Georgia Southern for a 4 p.m. tilt that same day.
Appalachian State 2, Georgia Southern 1
BOONE, N.C. - The Mountaineer women’s soccer team made the most of a beautiful autumn afternoon by defeating the Georgia Southern Eagles 2-1 at the ASU Soccer Stadium. Appalachian equals their win total from last season, improving to 9-3-3 and 3-3-1 in the SoCon. Georgia Southern falls to 2-11-2 and 1-4-2 in the league.
“We played well in possession today,” said head coach Ben Popoola. “We moved the ball very well and gave ourselves plenty of outstanding chances. Unfortunately the ball wouldn’t fall in the net as much as we would have liked. We got two goals, in the end that was enough.”
Appalachian owned the pace of play, dominating the shooting game 18-6 with seven chances on frame. With the win, Appalachian extends their winning streak to three consecutive matches.
Junior Casey Cleary opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a header goal. Sophomore Paige Morrow opened the play by delivering a free kick into the box to junior Brooke Humphrey who flicked the ball back into the mix and he head of Cleary. The goal is the eighth of the season for Cleary and the 24th of her career. Cleary is now tied for second place all-time on the ASU career goals chart, one shy of Jennifer Rudy’s 25 goals.
Appalachian looked to run away with the match, but an Eagle goal in the 31st minute took the wind out of Appalachian’s sails. Eagle Jenny Anderson crossed the ball across the face of goal, finding the clutches of Appalachian’s sophomore keeper Emma White. White landed awkwardly and fell backwards into the goal, giving Georgia Southern the equalizer.
The Mountaineers persistence payed off with time winding down as sophomore Jennifer MacNeill netted her first goal of the season. Cleary sprung MacNeill loose with a well-placed through ball giving MacNeill room to take the shot from 20 yards out. The right footed shot beat the Eagle keeper and gave Appalachian the lead in 77th minute.
Appalachian held on for the last 13 minutes, giving starting goalkeeper White the win, improving her record to 6-2-2. White only made one save and allowed a goal on the afternoon.
The Mountaineers hit the home stretch in the SoCon with a trip to UNC Greensboro this Thursday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. Appalachian has only three matches remaining before the SoCon tournament which begins on November 4. Georgia Southern hosts Wofford Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.
Davidson 3, Western Carolina 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Sophomore Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) continued her solid second season for the women's soccer team by registering her first-ever collegiate hat trick in leading the Davidson Wildcats to a 3-0 blanking of the Western Carolina Catamounts on Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Southern Conference action.
Davidson got on the board at the 1:48 mark in the match when the sophomore forward gathered a long pass from teammate Courtney Hart and put her shot in the lower right corner of the net. Bye-Nagel ended up putting two more shots in the goal to record a hat trick on the night. She took a give-and-go with Lauren Conner that slipped past WCU goalkeeper Caitlin Williams and finished in the open net. Then 13 minutes into the second half, she knocked in a header from four yards out to close out the scoring at 3-0.
Western Carolina found some positives in the stat sheet however, leading the match in shots taken, 11-7. They also shut out their opponent in corner kicks for the second straight match while taking seven corners of their own. Combining this match and last Friday's match against Georgia Southern, the Cats own a 19-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Catamounts were unfazed by the early defecit and kept fighting throughout the match, including senior Heather Dittmer's shot at the 66:36 mark that was barely saved by the Davidson goalkeeper. With the score 2-0, WCU went on the attack in the 55th minute, when Nikki Collins received the crossing pass and saw her header go just high of the goal.
Prior to the game, Western honored their six seniors from this year's team. Bailey Culp, Lauren Atkinson, Rebekah Mumm, Leah Daino, Heather Dittmer, and Melissa Berry were individually introduced to the Catamount faithful and were escorted by their families out to the middle of the field to meet with Coach Tammy DeCesare and WCU Athletic Director Chip Smith.
With the loss, Western Carolina drops to 8-8-1 on the season, and 3-4-1 in the Southern Conference. Davidson ups their record to 10-4-1 and 5-1-1 in the SoCon.
The Catamounts will look to get back on the winning side and enter the conference tournament on a roll when they travel down to Elon, N.C. to take on the Phoenix of Elon University on Sunday, October 28. Kick off is set for 2:00 p.m. They will then close out the regular season the following Wednesday in Spartanburg, S.C. when they face off against Wofford College. Davidson will host Elon Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
