East Carolina holds off host UNCG at UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic

GREENSBORO, NC ? Despite a team score of 292 on Tuesday by UNC Greensboro, East Carolina’s 15-shot lead to open the day was too much to overcome as the Lady Pirates won the UNCG-Starmount Forest Fall Classic by eight shots over the host Spartans.

 

The Pirates, who set a school record with a round of 284 on Monday, carded a team total of 299 to hold on for the win. East Carolina’s Emelie Lind held off a late charge to win the individual title with a one-under 141, carding a 71 on Tuesday. She fended off High Point’s Ann Marie Dalton, who shot a 69 to finish one shot back, and Miami’s Jessica Steward, who recorded the low round of the tournament with a 68 to finish two shots back along with Campbell’s Sandra Angulo.

 

UNCG’s top finishers were freshman Erica Creed and sophomore Annelie Weimenhog, who both finished a part of a five-way tie for sixth place. Both players recorded rounds of one-under 70 on Tuesday after forging rounds of

76 on Monday.

 

A total of 69 players consisting of 11 teams and 14 individuals competed in the 36-hole event.

 

UNCG returns to action on Friday when it begins play at Lady Paladin Invite, hosted by Furman University in Greenville, SC.

Lady Mocs Golf Ties for Third at Xavier Invitational

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Lady Mocs golf squad carded a third-round 296 at the LPGA International Xavier Invitational golf tournament Sunday with a three-round total 910 to finish tied for third, four strokes off winner Florida Atlantic.

 

“I’m very proud of how my girls played today,” first year Head Coach Colette Murray said.

 

Chattanooga was down 20 strokes and tied for sixth place after two rounds Saturday but battled back to just one stroke off second place. Freshman Christine Wolf fired a 72 Sunday afternoon to finish tied for 11th while classmate Emma de Groot shot a 73 to finish at nine-over and tied for ninth. Sophomores Kayla Stewart and Kelly Brotherton carded a 75 and 76, respectively, to pull the Lady Mocs up three spots and freshman Katie Taylor shot a 78.

 

The Lady Mocs will complete the fall competition slate Oct. 29-30 at the Edwin Watts Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston at Kiawah Island, S.C.

 

 

 

Johnson Powers Elon to Third at Starmount Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Taylor Johnson carded an even-par 71, lifting Elon to a third-place tie out of 11 teams at the UNC Greensboro-Starmount Forest Fall Classic women’s golf tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson (77-71?148) finished 13th in the 69-player field on the 6,265-yard course. Danielle Mills (Tied-14th/76-73?149), Samantha Widmer (Tied-24th/74-77?151), Kelsey Johnson (Tied-29th/77-75?152) and Frederique Bruell (Tied-49th/78-81?159) also represented the Phoenix in the two-round, two-day, 36-hole event.

Paced by medalist Emelie Lind (70-71?141), East Carolina (284-299?583) claimed the team title, followed by host UNCG (299-292?591), Elon (304-296?600), Florida International (300-300?600), Miami (306-295?601), Winthrop (307-301?608), Stetson (302-312?614), Ball State (319-296?615), Campbell (308-317?625), James Madison (315-315?630) and High Point (313-325?638).

 

 

Lamb Shoots Even Par To Finish Fifth At Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship

 

Knoxville, Tenn. -- Furman’s Blair Lamb (72-71-71=214) fired a final round, even-par 71 to finish in a tie for fifth at this weekend’s Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.

 

The junior, who finished four strokes back of the leaders, sunk three birdies during the final round of the 54-hole event to pace a Furman

(300-301-300=901) squad that finished 15th.  Freshmen Jaclyn Hilea and Stefanie Kenoyer carded rounds of 75 and 76, respectively to aid the Lady Paladin cause.

 

Sandra Gal of Florida and Cydney Clanton of Auburn tied for first at three-under par.  The Gators fired a final round 288 to edge Purdue by five strokes for the team title.

 

Furman returns home to host the annual Lady Paladin Invitational October 19-21, at the Furman University Golf Course.  Admission is free.

CofC Women's Golf Finishes 18th at Tarheel Invitational

 

Chapel Hill, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team shot a 313 in the last round to total a 940 and finish 18th at the Tarheel Invitational held Oct. 5-7 at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.  Duke shot a 288 to total an 877 for the tournament win.  Tennessee finished a close second with an 879.

 

Steffi Kirchmayr led the Cougars, tying for 61st with a 231.  Emily Rapp and Fiona Puyo tied for 76th with a 237 each.  Joanna Klatten shot a 238 to tie for 81st, while Kati Scholten tied for 91st with a 247.

 

Charleston is next in action Oct. 29-30th when the Cougars host the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah, Island, S.C.
