The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce that Chattanooga junior Lara Newberry has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Oct. 8 through Oct. 14.

A 5-7 libero from Chattanooga, Tenn., Newberry improved on her nation-leading digs per game average and led the Lady Mocs to three Southern Conference victories, keeping them in the battle for first place.

To start the week, against league leader College of Charleston, undefeated in conference play at the time, Newberry helped Chattanooga to the 3-2 win, scooping a staggering 45 digs in the process. That total equals her career high, set earlier this year, and was only one off the schools record.

In the next match, a sweep of UNC Greensboro, the junior bettered her average again, lifting 29 digs for a 9.67 digs per game average, improving on her 7.0 digs per game season average.

As if those two matches weren't enough, Newberry had another chance and took advantage of it, recording 32 digs in a 3-1 win over Elon to help the Lady Mocs to improve to 8-1 in Southern Conference play.

Newberry finished the week with 105 digs in 12 games to average 8.75 digs per game, improving her season average to 7.26 digs per game and her season total to 595. Last year she finished with 721 total digs, while recording 736 in her freshman campaign.
