SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced today that Appalachian State’s Carla Durham and Chattanooga’s Lara Newberry are co-players of the week in volleyball.
Durham, a senior from Dallas, Ga. had 28 kills,16 blocks and a hitting percentage of .444 in two Mountaineer wins. The 6-2 middle blocker had 14 kills and seven blocks against Davidson and 14 kills and nine blocks against Georgia Southern while hitting a season best .667 against Georgia Southern.
Newberry, a junior from Chattanooga, Tenn., had 105 digs in 12 games for an average of 8.75 digs per game. She helped Chattanooga to a 3-0 mark on the week with wins over College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro, and Elon. Of those 105 digs, 45 came against College of Charleston, 28 were posted against UNCG and 32 against Elon. Newberry leads the nation and the Southern Conference in digs per game with 7.25 and 7.40, Newberry is set to break the all-time digs of 2,058 mark at Chattanooga. She only needs seven digs to surpass the record.
Other top performers include Tiffany Blum of College of Charleston, Jessica Barrow of Elon, Courtney Stewardson of Furman, Katie Hennessey of Western Carolina and Liz Sheets of Wofford.
