Furman Invitational
Davidson’s Men’s Cross Country Team
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Four Davidson runners were within two seconds of each other, led by freshman Charlie Schmitt's time of 27:12, as the Wildcat men's cross country team finished sixth out of 18 teams at the Furman Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Schmitt's time was good for 23rd overall out of 148 runners and paced a Wildcat squad that put four runners in the top-30.
Following closely behind Schmitt was junior Alex Hoyt and sophomore Tom Divinnie. Hoyt was just two seconds off Schmitt's time, coming in at 27:14 to score a 26th place finish, while Divinnie matched Hoyt's time and picked up a 27th place finish.
Senior captain Sam Morris closed out Davidson's top-30 runners with a time of 27:16 to earn a 29th place finish.
Fellow senior Thad Sieracki just missed coming in the top-30 with a time of 27:19 and a 31st place finish.
Davidson now gears up for the Southern Conference Championships, which will be held in Cullowhee, N.C. on
Oct. 27. The Wildcats will be seeking to match last year's finish of fourth place, which they have done the past two years.
Furman’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Team
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Both cross country teams finished in the top five of their respective divisions, with the women taking third and the men fifth at the 35th annual Furman Cross Country Invitational today. Both teams finished best of all SoCon schools in competition at the event.
The Furman women were led by sophomore Brittany Johnson, who finished the 5K course with a time of 18:42, good for 12th overall. Freshman Jenna Callahan and senior Page Bridges also finished in the top 20 for the Lady Paladins.
UNC Charlotte took the women’s title, with a total of 60 team points, while Clemson came in second with 79 points.
Junior Patrick Morgan led the Furman men, finishing ninth with a time of
26:42 on the 8K course. Junior Joe Tenini also finished in the top 20 for the Paladins.
The Men’s division was won by ETSU with a total of 40 points and three runners in the top ten.
Wofford’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Team
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Wofford women’s cross country placed 14th out of 19 teams at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Saturday morning.
Junior Justina Oliva paced the Terriers coming in 87th place out of 177 runners by a time of 20:47.
Junior Sarah Whitener finished second amongst Wofford runners with a time of 21:07 putting her in 95th place.
Freshman Pearce Tapp came in 98th place, finishing third amongst the Terriers with a time of 21:11.
Sophomore Kari Harris recorded a time of 21:46 putting her in 114th place overall and fourth among Wofford.
Head coach Andrea Stehman commented on Harris’ performance, “Kari had the strongest performance and effort today. This is considering she suffered an injury earlier in the week and did not practice.”
Freshman Cindy Hernandez rounded off the top five Wofford runners coming in 127th place recording a time of 22:22.
The team will take a break and then head to Cullowhee, N.C. October 27 for the Southern Conference Championship.
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Wofford men’s cross country placed 14th out of 18 teams at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Saturday morning. Freshman Stuart McDaniel led the Terriers around the 8,177 mile course.
McDaniel finished in 67th placed out of 148 runners by a time of 28:18.
Junior Josh Shumaker finished second amongst Wofford runners coming in 78th place with a time of 28:40.
Rounding out the top five Terriers, freshman Josh Riley came in 101st place and third among Wofford with a time of 29:50. Sophomore Paul Vecchione completed today’s race fourth amongst the Terriers and 105th out of 148 runners running a time of 29:59. While junior Tommy Weber finished 115 coming in with a time of 30:43.
“Josh ran incredible today. He really stepped it up today with two of our top five men’s runners out due to injuries. Paul also did great. He had a break-through race today,” said head coach Andrea Stehman.
The team will take a break and then head to Cullowhee, N.C. October 27 for the Southern Conference Championship.
Georgia Southern’s Women’s Cross Country Team
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Georgia Southern cross country team finished in 12th place at the Furman Invitational on Saturday, led by senior Abby Bloom’s 39th place finish in Greenville, S.C.
With the 39th place finish, Bloom, the Snellville, Ga. native has now crossed the finish line first among all Eagles in every meet this season. Bloom had an average mile time of 6:22 in the 5k race for a total time of 19:46. She posted her second fastest overall time this season on Saturday, with her fastest coming two weeks ago at the Auburn Invitational.
Junior Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) was the second Georgia Southern runner to cross the finish line placing 68th with a time of 20:27. Laura Fuller the sophomore from Cartersville, Ga. came in with a time of 21:22.
The field was consisted of 21 teams in the women’s race, with Charlotte claiming the first place finish compiling a total score of 60. Stephanie Place from Tennessee Tech was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 17:50, but she was unable to break the meet record set by Carrie Tollefson of Villanova, who set the record in 1997 with a time of 16:29.
The Eagles are off for a week before heading to Cullowhee, N.C. to face off in the Southern Conference Championships on Saturday, October 27.
College of Charleston’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams
Front Runner Invitational
Chattanooga’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? The Chattanooga men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the FrontRunner Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Moccasin Bend race course.
In the men’s 5-kilometer race, the Mocs placed all five runners in the Top 10 to finish ahead of Middle Tennessee by eight points. Chattanooga’s Michael Mentz placed second in a time of 15:21, five seconds behind Festus Chemaoi of Middle Tennessee who finished first at 15:16. Chris Berry was third at 15:35 and David Moore was fourth at 15:40. Jeff Taylor placed sixth for the Mocs at 15:53 and Blake Ketron rounded out the scoring in the ninth spot at 16:24.
In the women’s race, Kathleen Turchin was passed at the finish line to finish second behind Zamzam Sangau who ran the two-mile race in 11:01. Shelley Taylor was third with a time of 11:19 and Katie Williams was fifth in a time of 11:29. Nettie Halcomb was the Lady Mocs’ fourth finisher in seventh at 11:44. Jordyn Radke rounded out the scoring at ninth for Chattanooga at 11:49.
Chattanooga will take the next two weeks off in preparation for the Southern Conference championships to be held in Cullowhee, N.C., on Oct. 27.
Low Country Invitational
The Citadel Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams
Johns Island, S.C. ? The Citadel Cross Country teams claimed both the men’s and women’s titles of the Lowcountry Invitational Saturday, topping regional teams on Johns Island. The Citadel topped Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina and Morris College in the race with sophomore Natalie Wolin winning the women’s race with a time of 19:21.
Wolin was the top Bulldog runner for the third time in four races this season. Junior Sarah Strickland finished third, running 19:48 with sophomore Katheryn Gatewood placing fourth with a time of 19:54.
The Citadel men recorded a 2-3-4 finish, led by the 16:10 time of sophomore Brendan Kight. Sophomore Daniel Knight followed him with a third-place finish by running 16:22 while senior Rob Isaac ran 16:28 to finish fourth.
The Citadel takes a week off before heading to Cullowhee, N.C. on Oct. 27 for the Southern Conference Championships.
Davidson’s Women’s Cross Country Team
CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Junior Caroline Sanker picked up a time of 17:44 to take home top honors in the female division as the Davidson women's cross country team competed at the 11th Annual Hopebuilders 5K in downtown Charlotte on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Sanker came in fourth overall out of 502 registered racers on Saturday.
Seven other Wildcat runners also had a nice showing at the 5K, each finishing in the top-60.
Finishing first and second in their own age group was senior Megal Atias and junior Kim Lang. Atias, who crossed the finish line with a time of 18:28, earned an overall place of 10th. Lang was right behind Atias with a time of
19:23 to place her with an overall finish of 18th.
Freshman Heather Canarroe was just five seconds off of Lang's time, coming in with a time of 19:28 and earning a 19th place finish.
Stephanie Scott and Sarah Frederick each finished in the top-45 with times of 20:59 and 21:01.
Kelly Davis rounded out the Wildcat roster who competed at the race as Davis earned a 5K time of 21:35 to finish 56th overall.
Davidson now looks to ready itself for the Southern Conference Championships, which will be held in Cullowhee, N.C. on Oct. 27. The Wildcats will be seeking to top last year's third place finish with its main competition coming from Chattanooga, who has won the championships five times.
