Greenville, S.C. -- Brooks Duff scored in the sixth minute and Bryan Amos notched his sixth shutout of the season as 17th-ranked Furman edged Wofford 1-0 in Southern Conference men’s soccer action Tuesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The Paladins improved to 11-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in SoCon play while Wofford dropped to 2-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the league. Furman’s 11-1-0 start marks its best ever record through the season’s first 12 matches.
The Paladins wasted little time taking control scoring the match’s only goal at the 5:28 mark. Patrick Murray spun away from a defender and played a ball wide down the right wing to Shea Salinas. The Grapevine, Texas, native sent a low cross to the near corner of the six-yard box where a sliding Duff finished the chance for his seventh goal of the season.
Wofford had several chances to equalize with its best coming with just over 28 minutes remaining. Kentral Owens slid onto a loose ball, but had his effort deflected by Amos. Philips Leach’s rebound shot was then saved off the line by Lewis Chaloner to end the threat.
Furman missed several opportunities to put the match out of reach in the final 30 minutes. Salinas and Murray each missed high from the top of the box on uncontested chances. With 22 minutes left, Salinas beat his defender around the right side, but Chris Davis could not slide onto his low cross in front of an open net.
Amos tallied two saves to earn the win for Furman while Joey Taylor stopped five shots for the Terriers. Furman held a 13-9 edge in shot attempts and 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Wofford steps out of the league hosting VMI at 6 p.m. on October 17.
Furman begins a three-match road trip travelling to Appalachian State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
College of Charleston 2, Elon 0
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- The College of Charleston men's soccer team earned its first Southern Conference victory, as Matt Morris score his third goal of the season to shut out the Elon Phoenix, 2-0, in front of 593 fans at Patriots Point Field.
"It was a great team effort, everyone contributed and played determined," said head coach Ralph Lundy. "Corbin (Waller) had an excellent game."
The win brings the Cougars record to 7-3-1, 1-0-0 in the SoCon. Elon falls to 6-3-3 and 3-1-0.
The first half saw a strong defensive battle. While the Cougars and the Phoenix both fought hard to maintain possession, CofC was outshot 4-3 in the first 45 minutes.
The Cougars committed a hand ball in their own penalty box and forward Brett Paschall attempted a penalty kick for Elon in the 42nd minute. CofC dodged a bullet as goalie Corbin Waller dove to make the save.
The first goal for the evening came by way of an own goal by the Elon defense. Following a throw in by the Cougars, Will Mason and the Phoenix defense worked to clear the ball from in front of the goal. The ball deflected off Mason and into the net (50:20).
CofC forward Kareem Yearwood came close to adding another point for the squad when he took the ball just nine yards right of the Phoenix goal. His shot landed just feet wide of the net.
The final goal of the match came in the 75th minute when Gus Teren crossed the ball to Morris who collected it and scored seven yards from left of the goal.
Defenders Ryan Kell, Branko, Branko Gavric and Doug Edwards held the Phoenix to seven shots with five attempts on goal. Waller, who made four saves during the match, earns his sixth shutout this season.
SoCon play continues for the Cougars when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face the UNC Greensboro Spartans Saturday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m. Elon returns to action next Tuesday, October 16 when it hosts North Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
UNC Greensboro 4, Davidson 2
GREENSBORO, NC ? Junior forward Thomas Campbell scored a natural hat trick to lead UNC Greensboro to a 4-2 win over Davidson in Southern Conference men’s soccer action Tuesday night.
Campbell, who earlier in the day was named the SoCon’s Player of the Week after recording seven points in the last two games, scored three consecutive goals for UNCG to turn an early 1-0 Davidson lead into a Spartan two-goal advantage. UNCG won its second straight and raised its record to 6-4-2 overall, 2-2-0 in SoCon action. Davidson fell to 1-10-0, 0-3-0 in league play.
The Wildcats scored just 47 seconds into the match to take their early lead. Tom Lavan hit a low line drive from 25 yards out that found the lower left corner of the goal and Davidson had a 1-0 lead before fans had even found their seats.
But Campbell put on a clinic from there, scoring three goals three different ways. His first goal came at 18:11 when Nirav Kadam fed him the ball from the right side of the box. Campbell popped the ball into the top of the goal from 10 yards out and the score was tied.
Just 1:49 before halftime, the Middletown, NJ native made it 2-1. Matt Strine chipped the ball into the center of the box for Campbell, who turned and hit a blast from 13 yards away for the goal.
Then, 8:13 after the intermission, Campbell completed his first career hat trick. After a foul just outside the box gave UNCG a free kick, Campbell hit a rocket into the top right corner for his third tally of the night and his eighth of the season. In the last three matches, Campbell now has 13 points on six goals and one assist.
The Spartans added an insurance goal at 65:08. Travis Young settled a loose ball on the left side of the box. With a defender on his back, he tapped it to Tebatso Manyama, who hit a blast from 13 yards out for his third goal of the season and a 4-1 lead.
Davidson’s Charlie Reiter closed the scoring at 83:30. Liam Bracken’s long cross found Reiter on the left side of the box. Reiter chipped the ball into the top of the goal after the keeper had come out. It was Rieter’s first goal of the season.
UNCG held a 20-14 advantage in shots. Robby Goldsberry had five saves for Davidson before giving way to Matt McElroy for the final 13:36. Nate Berry had four saves for UNCG.
The Spartans, who opened a five-game homestand on Tuesday night, return to action Saturday when they host College of Charleston in a key SoCon match-up. Davidson visits Georgia Southern Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in another key SoCon matchup.

#2 Wake Forest 5, Appalachian State 0
WINSTON-SALEM N.C. ? It was a tough night for the Appalachian State men’s soccer team, falling 5-0 to No. 2 ranked Wake Forest on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers fell behind early and struggled to recover, losing the shot game 12-5. Appalachian is now winless in their last two matches; Wake snaps their two match winless streak.
Appalachian falls to 6-4-1 on the season and remains 2-1-0 in the SoCon. Wake in the win improves to 8-0-2 and remains 2-0-1 in the ACC.
A challenge from behind inside the 18-yard box gave Wake Forest the early opportunity from the penalty spot. Patrick Phelan converted the chance to put Wake Forest up 1-0 in the third minute. Four minutes later, Phelan scored again, this time from 10-yards to give the Deacons the quick 2-0 lead with only six minutes gone.
The Deacons pushed the lead to 3-0 with a Cory Arnoux goal in the 19th minute. Once their early struggles were through, the Appalachian defense held firm for the next 48 minutes, not conceding a goal. In the 68th minute, as the rain began to fall, Wake Forest’s Zack Schilawski netted a short range shot to extend the lead to 4-0.
An Appalachian own goal in the 83rd minute put the Deacons up 5-0
Senior Greg Walters earned the start in goal but allowed three goals without making a save. Walters worked the first 29 minutes before being relieved by Tyler Smith. Smith made 2 saves in 62 minutes of action. The junior allowed 2 goals. Walters suffered the loss, falling to 4-3-2 on the season.
Appalachian will play next on this Sunday, October 14 against SoCon leader Furman. The Mountaineers host the Paladins starting at 2:00 at the ASU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free.
