Southern Conference Football Honorees for Oct. 1
Offensive Players of the Week
Appalachian State running back Kevin Richardson (Elizabethtown, N.C.) and Wofford running back Kevious Johnson (Fitzgerald, Ga.) shared Southern Conference Offensive Players of the Week honors. Richardson rushed for 158 yards on 26 totes with one touchdown as the Mountaineers beat No. 24-ranked Elon, 49-32 on the road. Johnson scored three touchdowns and led the Terriers to a 45-20 win over Furman with 118 yards on 14 totes.

Defensive Player of the Week
Western Carolina linebacker Quinton Phillips (Charlotte, N.C.) earned SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors. Phillips recorded a career-best 19 tackles, including six solo tackles and 13 assists at Georgia Southern. The transfer from Louisburg College entered the Georgia Southern game with 26 total tackles through the first four games of the season. Georgia Southern stopped the Catamounts, 50-21.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Elon’s Michael Mayers (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week. Mayers returned four kickoffs 225 yards including a 100-yard return for a TD and another for 83 yards in Elon’s 49-32 loss to Appalachian State. Mayers set SoCon records for kickoff return yards and all-purpose yards (387 yards). In addition, the senior wide receiver hauled in 14 passes for 162 yards and a score.

Freshman of the Week
Georgia Southern running back Chris Teal (Cairo, Ga.) was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week. Teal rushed for 64 yards on 20 carries and scored his first collegiate touchdown as Georgia Southern stopped Western Carolina, 50-21. Teal also caught two passes for 38 yards in the Eagles’ victory.
