OXFORD, Ind.--Appalachian State dropped two dual matches at the Boilermaker Duals on Saturday. ASU lost to Cleveland State, 25-18, and to host Purdue, 28-9.

In the biggest matchup of the day, ASU’s Scott Ervin took down Purdue’s Jake Patacsil by a 6-4 sudden victory in the 149 pound weight class. Ervin entered the week No. 17 in the NWCA coaches poll, while Patacsil had risen to No. 10. Neal Martin, who was a nominee for last week’s SoCon weekly honors, kept up his winning ways with two more victories. After earning his third pin of the season in his matchup against CSU, Martin held on for a 2-0 decision against Purdue’s Jason Martin.

VMI Wrestler Wins 157-Pound Title at Virginia Intercollegiate

NORFOLK, Va.- Junior Tommy Cunningham kicked off the new year in style by claiming the 157-pound weight class at the Virginia Intercollegiates, held on Saturday at Granby HS in Norfolk. Cunningham led VMI to a fifth-place finish in the team standings among the seven competing schools.

Meanwhile, 18th-ranked senior Sam Alvarenga saw his 13-match winning streak come to an end in the championship final at 149 lbs., as he fell to Old Dominion’s Kaylan Baxter, one of three championships claimed by the Monarchs, who took the team competition with 196 pts., just beating out Virginia with 179 pts.

In addition to Cunningham & Alvarenga, both junior Dustin McCabe (174) and senior Corry Murray (184) placed third in their weight class, while senior John Burton (165) and senior Scott Buhman (285) each placed fourth. Freshman Brandon Franklin (141) and sophomore Kyle Elgert (174) each scored fifth-place finishes in the tournament.

Cunningham bounced back from a disappointing 0-2 performance last weekend at the Southern Scuffle to post a 3-0 record and his first State Championship after placing second as a sophomore and third as a freshman. Along the way, Cunningham shutout each of his three opponents, as he posted a 12-0 major decision of JMU’s Jeff Jacobs, a 5-0 blanking of Robert Henry and a 4-0 decision over Virginia’s Mike Sewell. Cunningham now stands at 14-5 on the season after winning his first collegiate tournament title at 157.

Alvarenga fell just short of his second career State Championship, instead grabbing his third runner-up finish. Alvarenga opened up the day by scoring a 9-2 decision over ODU’s Joey Metzler, followed by a 10-0 major decision over Virginia’s Pete Ferrara. That win set up the showdown with Baxter, who used a reversal with two seconds remaining in the third period to score the 7-6 victory. Alvarenga’s record for the season now stands at 20-3.

McCabe posted his third consecutive third-place finish in the Intercollegiates by going 3-1 on the day at 174. He opened up by scoring a 7-2 decision over George Mason’s Bill Widener, before dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in the championship semifinals to eventual champion, Virginia’s Mike Grogan. In the consolation bracket, McCabe was awarded a forfeit win over teammate Cubby Elgert, before scoring a 7-5 victory in the third-place match against ODU’s Derrick Coffey.

At 184, senior Corry Murray opened up with a technical fall victory against Apprentice’s Russell Dawson before dropping a 4-3 decision to eventual champion Virginia’s Rocco Caponi in the Championship Semifinal. Murray immediately bounced back to post a 6-3 decision over Virginia’s Calvin Cardillo, before being awarded a forfeit win over George Mason’s Matt Moyer in the third-place match, an opponent Murray will likely face this Wednesday when the two teams meet in a dual match at Cocke Hall.

At heavyweight, Buhman opened up with a pin of JMU’s Zach Winfrey in 3:54 before falling to Virginia’s Scott Smith. Buhman then defeated Virginia’s Jack Danilkowicz for the second time in a week, this time by a 6-1 decision, before falling to Ryan Kittrick in the third place match.

The Keydets will return to action on Wednesday afternoon, as they host GMU at the Thunderdome in a Noon start.
