ELON, N.C. Stephen Curry poured in a game-high 25 points as Davidson sprinted past Elon 88-58 in Southern Conference men?s basketball action Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.
The Wildcats (19-4 overall, 10-1 SoCon) charged to a 32-16 lead on a three-pointer by Jason Richards with 4:23 left in the first period and eventually settled for a 39-23 halftime advantage following a trey by Curry in the stanza?s final seconds.
Davidson reeled off 20 of the second half?s first 30 points to extend its edge to 59-33 on a pair of free throws by Andrew Lovedale with 11:18 remaining in the contest. The Phoenix (5-15, 3-7) went on a 20-13 run to draw within 72-53 on a charity shot by LeVonn Jordan with 6:19 to play, but could inch no closer.
In addition to Curry (eight rebounds), the Wildcats received key performances from Thomas Sander (18 points, 13 rebounds, six assists), Boris Meno (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Richards (12 points, eight rebounds, four assists).
Elon was led by Jordan (24 points, six rebounds), Devan Carter (nine points, four assists), Jon Ogolo (nine points) and Ola Atoyebi (10 rebounds). The Phoenix bench outscored the Wildcat bench 34-19.
Davidson out-rebounded the Phoenix 60-32 and committed just 10 turnovers to Elon?s 12. The Wildcats fired 42.3 percent (30 of 71) from the field while holding the Phoenix to 36.5 percent (23 of 63) from the floor. Davidson outscored Elon 38-18 in the paint, 17-3 off turnovers and 32-10 off second chances.
