Sanders, Gatewood Destroy School Records as The Citadel Competes at the Diet Pepsi Invitational Saturday
Gainesville, Fla. ? Junior Tasha Sanders opened up the 2007 season by destroying the school record in the 55m hurdles as The Citadel track and field teams competed at the Diet Pepsi Invitational hosted by the University of Florida Saturday. Sanders wasn’t alone in the record setting performance as freshman Katheryn Gatewood set a new 800m record with a time of 2:22.11.
Sanders’ time of 8.81 is almost 0.2 seconds faster than the previous school record she held, setting the new mark at the Stephen O’Connell Center in Gainesville. Sanders previously held the school record in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.97. Her time of 8.81 came in the prelims and the Summerville, S.C. native advanced to finals, where she finished 17th with a time of 8.89. The finals of the 55m hurdles had runners from nationally ranked teams like Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Florida State and Auburn.
Gatewood added to the record writing campaign with her performance in the 800m. Gatewood’s time tops teammate Megan Jenkins’ mark of 2:23.69 set last season at the Clemson Invitational. This marks the second time that Gatewood has set a school record in her debut performance as the El Paso, Texas native set the school’s cross country record in her first race last fall.
A total of 14 new personal records were set by the Bulldogs as The Citadel jumped off to a great start to the 2007 indoor season. Redshirt senior Alexis Moore was one of the record setting Bulldogs, recording the school’s fourth fastest time in the 55m dash. Moore finished sixth in her prelim heat with a time of 7.42 while teammate and school record holder Jodi Whittle ran the 55m dash in 7.38. Moore’s achievements continued in the 200m dash where she won her heat with a time of 26.03. That mark placed her 25th overall and is the second fastest time in school history.
The personal records kept falling Senior Charles Kutz set a new personal best by running the mile in 4:25.65. That tops his previous best time by more than a full second as he finished second in his heat and 24th overall in the mile. On the women’s distance side of things, senior Laura Hewston set a new personal best by more than one full second with an 11:38.59 time in the 3,000m.
Senior Alex Croskey also had a record day in the weight throw as the Pittsburg, Calif. native set a new personal best throw with a mark of 43’ 7.25”.
Stephanie McNeill began her senior year with an eight place finish in the weight throw as she competed against former NCAA Champions and one Georgia thrower that competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. McNeill’s throw of 52’ 2” put her in a finalist position but fell just short of a new personal best mark for the Summerville, S.C. native.
Junior Steven Craig posted a personal best time of 9:11.40 in the 3,000m as he bested his previous top mark by more than 27 seconds.
The Citadel returns to action next week, Feb. 3, when the Bulldogs head to the North Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. For complete coverage of Bulldog Track and Field, visit the official home of The Citadel Athletics at CitadelSports.com.
