Marchant Top Finish at Kentucky's McCravy
LEXINGTON, Ky. ?- Senior Lanni Marchant claimed a first place finish in the women’s 3000-meter run Saturday afternoon at the Rod McCravy Memorial Indoor Track and Field Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Marchant finished in a time of 9:46.24 ahead of Vanderbilt’s Erika Schneble (9:47.39) and Carmen Mims (9:52.14) in the Mocs season opener. That marks the third consecutive year that a Chattanooga runner has claimed first in the race.
“Lanni has proved in cross country that we can survive after the graduation of other runners,” UTC head coach Bill Gautier said. “She finished second in that race last year behind Shannon Wommack and did a great job placing ahead of runners from Tennessee and Vanderbilt.”
Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Memphis and Louisville were just a few of the schools competing in the event at the E.J. Nutter Field House.
In the Mile Run, Michael Mentz took fourth place for the Mocs finishing with a mark of 4:12.77.
“Michael’s 4:12 is huge,” Gautier said. “He was out ahead of everyone in his heat, but it was slow and that hurt him.”
In the women’s Mile Run Nettie Halcomb placed 11th with a time of 4:59.84 and Emily Wood was 14th in the 800m run. On the men’s side, transfer Michael Denahy was 15th at 1:57.24 and Stephen George was 18th at 1:59.57.
With a larger roster and more diversity on the team this season, Gautier will be able to focus on the sprinters on the squad.
“Jordan Hazard (in the 200m) ran a good race,” Gautier said. “Jordan will get better with more training. What hurts us the most is that the sprinters have nowhere to practice. “I thought most everybody ran well today,” Gautier said. “This was our first race of the year. Most of these other schools competed last week.“
Up next for Chattanooga is the University of Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., Feb. 2-3.
