Phoenix Tracksters Shine at UNC Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Elon University turned in several solid performances in women’s indoor track and field action at the UNC Opener Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House.

Katelyn Ealer ran to first place out of 13 competitors in the 5000-meter run, clocking in at 18:38.76. Tara Mulcahy finished third out of 14 participants in the one-mile run, scurrying to a time of 5:34.02. Dominique Price qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, sprinting to a time of 9.11 seconds.

Monique Vines placed sixth out of 33 athletes in the women’s long jump, leaping to a distance of 5.33 meters (17-06.00) and Samantha Miller ended up eighth in the weight throw.

The Phoenix will next spring into action at the UNC Fast Times meet on Jan. 26-27 at the Eddie Smith Field House.

UNCG track teams open indoor season at Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, NC - UNCG's men's and women's track teams opened the 2007 indoor season this past weekend at the UNC Opener with Jeff Williams winning the 800 meters.

Williams, a senior from South Plainfield, NJ who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Regionals last May and has twice won the Southern Conference Indoor 800 title, won the race with a time of 1:54.98, nearly a full second against of Omar Wiggin from St. Augustine.

UNCG had three runners place in the Top 10 in the men's 3000 meters, led by fourth-place finisher Xavier Rutz in a time of 8:48.39. Ryan Rodd finished fifth, Josh Wyatt finished seventh and Keith Gruchacz placed ninth.

On the women's side, Kathy Oldham placed ninth in the mile with a time of 5:50.76 and Jess Weber placed third in the women's 3000 with a time of 10:54.98.

The teams return to action on January 26 and 27 at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, TN.

Davidson Men's & Women’s Indoor Track & Field

 

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  - Kristen Meister set a new Wildcat standard in the high jump with a mark of 5'6, and the men made three additions to their top-10 performers list at the UNC Opener hosted by the Unversity of North Carolina Saturday afternoon.

 

The women's 4x400 relay team of Jessica Chasen, Kim Cooley, Kennesia Martin and Kristen Meister posted a time of 4:17.16, the second-best time in program history on a stan dard-size indoor track.

 

On the men's side, Tom Divinnie turned in a top-10 Wildcat performance in the 3000 meters with a second place finish time of 8:43.35. Will Funderburg and Jim Walter each added their names to the top-10 list with throws of

11.86 and 11.48 meters, respectively, in the 35 lb. weight event. Funderburg finished 10th in the event, one of seven top-10 finishes on the day for the 'Cats.

 

Alex Hoyt and Douglas Noreen finished in the top ten in the mile. Hoyt's time of 4:29.82 was good for fifth while Noreen was seventh after a 4:31.87 run.

 

David Ritchie finished in 10th place in the 400 meters with a time of 50.60, and then ran with Brad Troxell, Cisco Morales and Justin Song on the 'Cats eighth-place 4x400 relay team. The grouping of Hoyt, Edmund Neyle, Quin Patton and Peter Bruton finished fifth in the distance medley relay.

 

The women's track teams will return to action on Jan. 19 at the Clemson Invitational. The men will be back in action the following weekend at UNC Fast Times in Chapel Hill on Jan. 26.
