Women's Track Excels at Liberty Kickoff Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. ? The Elon women's indoor track team set two school records and claimed an individual first-place finish in its first meet of the season at the Liberty Kickoff Invitational.

Jessica Clendenning set a new Elon record in the pole vault with a third-place finish and a height of 3.75 meters (12-03.50 feet), eclipsing her own mark of 3.60 meters set last February. The top-three finishers in the event all registered 3.75 meters, but the top-two finishers achieved the height in fewer attempts.

Monique Vines recorded a school record in the long jump in her first competition for the Phoenix. Vines registered a distance of 5.50 meters (18-00.50 feet) for a sixth-place finish.

Dominique Price tallied a first-place finish for the Phoenix. Price posted a time of 8.92 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to take the win.

Tara Mulcahy turned in a solid performance for Elon placing sixth in the 800-meter run crossing the finish line in 2:28.34. Mulcahy also took home second place in the one-mile run with a time of 5:22.07, edging out Elon teammates Jenny Pearce (3rd/5:33.56) and Emily Schmitt (6th/5:57.31).

Price was also Elon's top finisher in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.26 to finish 12th. Clendenning placed 17th with a time of 27.67 while Danielle Simmons finished 18th (27.75) and Jessica Weaver placed 19th (28.13).

Jennine Strange finished 14th in the 400-meter dash with a tme of 1:02.31 while Weaver placed 21st (1:05.08) and Julie McGowan finished 25th (1:06.06).

Lauren Connelly and Kimberly Abel finished eigth and ninth, respecitvely, in the high jump with each posting a height of 1.47 meters (4-09.75 feet).

Angela Carlberg placed 11th in the shot put with a distance of 11.08 meters (36-04.25 feet) while teammate Sara Rickert finished 15th with a distance of 10.52 meters (34-06.25 feet).

"I was very pleased, the young women really came together as a team" said first-year head coach Mark Elliston. "It was a great first meet with some exciting events taking place."

Elon returns to action on Jan. 13 at the UNC Opener in Chapel Hill, N.C.

 

Georgia Southern Women’s Indoor Track & Field

 

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Track & Field team traveled to Clemson University to compete in their inaugural meet of the 2006-2007 season.  The event welcomed over 15 women’s teams.

 

Beginning on Friday (Dec. 1) the Eagles began competition with the qualifying round of the 60m Hurdles, sending senior Brittany Chase, junior Amber Wilson and senior Lauren Jacobs to the finals.  Jacobs also competed in the Long Jump event taking eighth place with a distance of 18’03.75”.

 

In the 20lb Weight Throw, senior Emily Greeson had a successful start to the indoor season.  Entering Georgia Southern’s record book with the third best finish and setting a new personal best, Greeson threw a distance of 53’1.75”.

 

Saturday’s (Dec. 2) action took off for the Eagles when senior Nicole Brown ran the 200m in 25.39, taking 11th of 71.  Fellow Eagle Carla Ballard (junior) finished the 400m in 59.15, beating her 2005-06 season best time of 1:00.71 by more than a second.  Senior Ashley Bush-Hardy also topped her previous season best in the event with a time of 1:01.31.

 

Continuing with the final round of the 60m Hurdles, Chase came in sixth place with a time of 8.92 while Wilson finished the event in 9.15 seconds.  Wilson also surpassed her 2005-06 best time and set a new personal best in the High Jump, taking fifth with a height of 5’5”.  In the same event, freshman Melanie Trumbo finished at 5'3", good enough to take over fourth place in GSU's record book.

 

Newcomer Demetrise Anthony had an outstanding performance in her first collegiate meet, entering GSU’s top five in the Triple Jump.  With a distance of 38’06.0”, Anthony now ranks fourth on the Eagles all-time list.

 

“As a team we had a good start, not great, but good” said head coach Natalie Smith.  “We got those first-meet jitters out of the way and it was a great meet to get past that nervousness. It was beneficial for us to see the other schools that were there, especially since we have a lot of girls who want to compete.  Some of them even performed today as well as they had been at the end of last season. Emily Greeson, Demetrise Anthony, Amber Wilson and Nicole Brown each had some good results in highlighted areas.”

 

The Eagles will have seven weeks off, returning to competition after the New Year when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. Jan. 26-27 for the Niswonger Classic.

Women’s Track and Field Dominates Field Events as the Mountaineers Host Appalachian Open

December 2, 2006 - BOONE, N.C.--Junior Brittani Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Mountaineers with individual victories in both the weight throw and the shot put with distances of 14.53 meters and 14.56 meters, respectively, as the Appalachian State University women’s track and field team opened the season by hosting the Appalachian Invitational at the Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday, December 2nd. No team scores were kept.

Appalachian proved to be formidable in the field events as the Mountaineers placed first in five out of six competitions. Junior Vonteena Knotts (Charlotte, N.C.) claimed victory in the long jump, leaping a distance of 6.30 meters.

In the Pole Vault, sophomore Shea Snow (Boonville, N.C.) tied for first-place with Gardner-Webb’s Kelly Bridges with a height of 3.50 meters, with teammates Kaitlyn Heeke (Hickory, N.C.) and Ashley Beale (Raleigh, N.C.) placing in a tie for third, both clearing a height of 3.35 meters.

In the high jump, freshman Meg Phillips (Shallotte, N.C.) claimed victory with a height of 1.68 meters and freshman Julie Ward (Boone, N.C.) placed third (1.58 meters).

In the triple jump competition, Knotts placed second (12.11 meters) and freshman Danielle Thorpe (Durham, N.C.) placed third (11.69 meters).

In the sprints, Knotts and freshman Ashley McKiver (High Point, N.C.) tied for second behind Western Carolina’s Tangelia Johnson with a time of 7.11 seconds in the 55-meter dash.

Freshman Chinelle McFadden (Durham, N.C.) placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.38.

The Mountaineers will return to action on January 19-20 as Appalachian travels to Clemson, S.C. to compete in the Clemson Invitational.

Women's Track Opens Indoor Season at Appalachian Invitational

BOONE, N.C. -- The Davidson women's track and field team kicked off the indoor season at the Appalachian Invitational on Sat., Dec. 2 in Boone, setting four new school records in the team's first competition.

The 11-team field featured the host Mountaineers along with other Southern Conference rivals Western Carolina and Wofford, as well as Charlotte, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb.

With a time of 7.48 in the 55 meter dash, Chierko Phillips set a new school record and finished 11th, and she turned in her second top-15 finish, placing eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.81.

In the 400 meter dash, Jessica Chasen finished sixth with a time of 60.26, also breaking the school mark.

In the field events, Kristen Meister and Kennesia Marlin each smashed school records. Meister finished second in the high jump with a 1.63m jump, while Marlin's jump of 11.28m was good for a seventh-place finish.

WCU Track & Field Posts 18 Podium Finishes, Eight First-Places at ASU Invitational

Raquel Ramseur leads WCU with two first-place runs; Tangelia Johnson sets track record

The Western Carolina men's and women's track & field teams combined to post 18 podium finishes including eight first-place performances at the season-opening Appalachian Invitational Saturday at the Holmes Center.

In the head-to-head team competition between Western Carolina and UNC Asheville in the Parkway Series, the Catamount women won 270.5-to-63.5 while the men outscored UNCA 254-to-75 to give WCU two points and a three-point advantage, 5-2, overall.

"For the first meet of the indoor season, I felt we had a pretty good showing overall with several outstanding individual efforts and performances," said head coach Danny Williamson. "Today was a good measuring stick for us and from all indications, I feel that we are further along this season than we were this time a year ago."

Western's women led the way with 12 top three finishes, including seven individual first-place runs. Junior Raquel Ramseur posted a pair of top finishes by winning both the 200- and 400-meter events, setting an ASU track record in the 200. Ramseur's classmate, Tangelia Johnson, ran second in the 200-meter dash and set a WCU school record by winning the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.95. Rounding out the sprints, senior Asia Davis also claimed a first-place finish by winning the 800-meter run while also placing second in the 55-meter hurdles.

Senior Deanna Kulsez and junior Kerrie Savery went one-two in the women's mile run, finishing two seconds apart at 5:13 and 5:15, respectively. Kulesz also claimed the top spot in the 3,000-meter run.

Other top performances for Western's women included Morgan Broadnax finishing fourth in the triple jump, Sharhonda Bell placing fourth in the weight throw, and Brittany Whittaker edging out teammate Angela Stark for fourth and fifth in the high jump competition. Also, two WCU teams finished first and second in the 4x400-meter relay.

On the men's side, WCU track & field newcomer - and two-sport standout, Albert Ashcraft - running unattached led a Catamount parade as Western claimed five of the top six spots in the 200-meter dash. Junior Zeb Johnson ran second, followed by James Gregory and Manteo Mitchell in fourth with Dominique Young in sixth. Ashcraft also won the 55-meter dash just edging out Johnson, while Mitchell ran second and Gregory fourth in the 400-meter dash.

Freshman Matt Evans won his first collegiate event in the high jump, clearing 1.93 meters to defeat teammate Anthony Rogers who was competing unattached (second) and Daniel Joseph (fourth). The Catamount men's 4x400-meter relay also finished in the runner-up position.

Other top performances for Western included Mike Malone finishing fourth and Matt Harlfinger placing fifth in the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Jestin Jennings running fourth in the 800-meters. Also competing unattached, senior Tyler Ferguson won the men's triple jump.

Women’s Track and Field team opens indoor season

BOONE, N.C. -- The Wofford women’s track and field teams opened their 2006-07 indoor seasons at the Appalachian State Indoor Invitational on Saturday.

Four Terriers finished in the top-20 in the one-mile, with Sarah Whitener leading the way with a 14th place finish and a time of 5:57.84. Katie Fields, Justina Olivia and Mandy Mills finished just behind Whitener at 15th through 17th, respectively.

The 4x400m relay team tied Milligan for 12th place with a time of 4:58.59.

Crystal Belcher launched the shot put 10.77m to earn a 12th-place finish.
