UNCG 30, Appalachian State 15

GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro tallied three fall victories and defeated Appalachian State 30-15 in the Spartans’ Southern Conference wrestling opener on Sunday afternoon at Fleming Gymnasium.

 

Junior Jeff Hedges started things off for the Spartans at 125 lbs. and recorded the 23-7 technical fall decision over ASU’s Frank Celorrio to give UNCG the 5-0 early lead. Tripp Rogers, the Mount Holly, NC native, picked up the fall victory at 133 lbs. by pinning Corey Hulsey in 4:19. Junior Chris Bencivenga grabbed the 14-4 major decision at 141 lbs. to put UNCG up 15-0.

 

The Mountaineers followed with a fall victory by 16th-ranked Scott Ervin at 149 lbs. and a decision win at 157 lbs. The Spartans, however answered back with a fall victory by junior Mark Ring at 165 lbs. Senior Joe Lowe picked up his 13th victory of the year with the 10-4 decision over ASU’s Neal Martin at 174 lbs. to give the Spartans the 24-9 lead.

 

Appalachian State took the close 3-2 decision at 184 lbs. However, freshman Nick Clark recorded his team-leading fifth pin and gave UNCG the 30-12 lead as the Cohocton, NY native pinned Brandon Brothers in 6:03. In the final bout, ASU’s David Hazel grabbed the 6-4 decision over Joe Sheffield at 285 lbs.

 

The Spartans (3-1, 1-0 SoCon) return to the mat on Friday when they travel to VMI. Match begins at 7:30 pm.
