GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro wrestling team split its dual doubleheader on Wednesday night, defeating Gardner-Webb 36-9 and falling 22-14 to Buffalo in Fleming Gymnasium.
Jeff Hedges, a junior from Havre, MT, put UNCG up six after recording a fall victory over the Gardner-Webb’s Cortney Roberts in 2:11 at the 125 lbs. weight class. After the Bulldogs took the 7-0 decision at 133 lbs., junior Chris Bencivenga grabbed the 14-6 major decision victory over Chas Franz at 141 lbs. to put the Spartans up 10-3.
Gardner-Webb followed with a 4-2 decision at the 149 lbs. weight class.
UNCG, in return, gained two forfeits at 157 and 165. Senior Joe Lowe took the 11-3 major decision over Chad Davis to give UNCG the 26-6 lead with three matches remaining.
The Bulldogs snatched the close 5-4 decision at 184 lbs. but Nick Clark, freshman from Cohocton, NY, recorded the UNCG’s second fall of the dual by pinning Dustin Porter in 4:55 at the 197 lbs. weight class. In the final bout, junior Joe Sheffield claimed the 16-5 major decision victory over Nick Roehrick at 285 lbs. to give the Spartans the 36-9 win over the Bulldogs.
In the second dual of the night, Hedges picked up the 13-5 major decision win over Buffalo’s Dan Bishop to give UNCG a 4-0 lead. The Bulls’ Mark Budd, the No. 12 wrestler in the nation, took the technical fall win at 133 lbs. before Bencivenga collected the 23-11 major decision over Andrew Stella.
Buffalo gained the lead after Jason Hilliard and Justin Hunt each recorded victories to give the Bulls the 13-8 advantage. The Bulls also grabbed the 5-2 decision at the 165 lbs. weight class. Lowe, the Lakeland, FL product, responded with a 6-4 overtime decision win over Nate Rock at 174 lbs. Buffalo responded with a overtime victory of their own when Ray Lamb defeated Scott Snyder, 3-1, to give the Bulls the 19-11 lead.
The Bulls grabbed another close decision at 197 lbs. to extend their lead going into the final match of the evening. Sheffield, however, picked up his team-leading 17th overall victory in the last bout when he defeated Jeff Parker 3-1 at 285 lbs.
UNCG opens up its Southern Conference match play when the Spartans play host to Appalachian State on Sunday. Match set for 2 pm in Fleming Gymnasium.

BOONE--Appalachian State split its dual meet with Gardner-Webb and Buffalo on Tuesday at Varsity Gym. The Mountaineers beat GWU 42-3, but fell to Buffalo 25-16. The results put ASU at 4-9 in dual meets on the season.
In the first match of the afternoon, Buffalo easily defeated Gardner-Webb, 42-3. The Bulls’ Mark Budd, No. 9 in the latest NWCA poll, pinned GWU’s Rob Tate in 4:32 for his second pin of the season, improving his record at that point to 21-3. GWU’s sole points were scored via a Dustin Porter decision over Ricky Scott as the Bulls rolled over the Bulldogs.
ASU then defeated Gardner-Webb 31-15 to earn its fourth dual win of the year. The Mountaineers were aided in the effort by pins from Scott Ervin at 149 pounds and Dave Hazell at heavyweight. Ervin recorded his fifth pin in 1:27 against GWU’s Josh Lowe, staking the Mountaineers out to a 10-9 team points lead. Two forfeitures from GWU at the 157- and 165-pound weight classes added twelve to ASU’s score, then Neal Martin and Dave Hazell added wins to clinch the victory.
The respective victories set up a final matchup between ASU and Buffalo, which was not short on excitement.
In the opening match, freshman Frank Celorrio owned an early 2-0 lead over Buffalo’s Dan Bishop, and appeared to be heading toward adding another takedown when he shot at Bishop at the beginning of the second period. However, Bishop flipped Celorrio and took control, which the freshman could not find a way out of and surrendered a pin at 4:00.
ASU’s Corey Hulsey then found himself on the receiving end of a pin by Budd at 133 pounds, and Buffalo staked out an early 12-0 lead.
Appalachian wouldn’t give up, though, and managed to eventually pull back within two points. Clinton Swango’s hard-fought match with Andrew Stella in the 141 pound weight class was 6-6 in points and decided by his 1:09 riding time advantage, giving the freshman a 7-6 decision to get ASU on the board, 12-3. Scott Ervin then scored a 13-0 major decision over Jason Hilliard to improve the junior’s record to 14-2 on the season, and Eddie Hutchinson earned a 6-0 decision over Justin Hunt in the 157 pound weight class.
Buffalo was able to change the momentum when Mike Ragusa came back to win his match with junior Tommy Hutchinson in overtime, 9-7. Neal Martin made it a two-team point margin again with a 4-1 decision over Nate Rock, but in the end the Bulls’ experience got the best of ASU. Senior Ray Lamb scored a 9-1 major decision over sophomore Dan Carrasco at 184 pounds, and Ricky Scott pinned ASU freshman Brandon Brothers at 3:29 to make it 25-13 and clinch it for Buffalo.
Dave Hazell wrapped up the night for Appalachian with a 4-0 winning decision, his second victory of the night. Hazell, Ervin, Martin and Eddie Hutchinson each posted 2-0 records in the tri-meet.
Ervin’s and Hazell’s pins keep them at pace with each other for the team lead, at five apiece.
ASU’s next meet is its SoCon opener on Jan. 14, when the Mountaineers travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on UNC Greensboro. The meet is scheduled for 2 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Va.- VMI heavyweight Leon Barrow posted a 2-1 overtime victory in the final match of the day, but it wasn’t enough as George Mason held on for a 23-22 dual victory on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference wrestling action at the Thunderdome. The loss puts VMI’s dual record at 1-2, while GMU improves to 5-2.
VMI took six of the ten matches on the day, but the Patriots got three six-point wins and a five-pointer to account for their 23 points. Those came as the result of a pair of pins, a technical fall and a forfeit conceded by VMI.
With the match starting at 125 lbs., GMU’s Joe Coughlin was awarded a forfeit victory when he was unopposed by the Keydets. Instead, VMI freshman Johnathan Pope, originally slated for that 125 lb. match, moved up to 133 where he took on GMU’s Mostafa Ibrahim. Pope brought the home fans to their feet just before the second period ended, as he posted his first collegiate pin at the 4:42 mark against Ibrahim to square the match at six.
At 141, VMI’s Tyler Anthony also moved up a weight class to take on GMU’s Will Powars, where he claimed a 5-2 win to give VMI a 9-6 advantage. That match preluded a 9-4 victory by VMI senior and 20th-ranked Sam Alvarenga against Chris Cartella at 149.
In the fifth match of the day, the Keydets grabbed their largest lead of the afternoon when junior Tommy Cunningham posted his second shutout victory of Robert Henry in less than a week, this time doing so in major decision fashion with an 8-0 score, giving the hosts a 16-6 lead.
The Patriots cut into that margin quickly, as Tyler Tisdell put up five points with his technical fall win over Vince Cole by a 21-6 count (6:09) to make the score 16-11, before Randy Oates pinned VMI’s Dustin McCabe in 1:14, giving the Patriots a 17-16 advantage.
But the resilient Keydets fought back yet again, as senior Corry Murray fell just one point short of scoring a major decision victory with his 14-7 win against GMU’s Matt Moyer. The Keydets’ short-lived two-point lead would fall in the next match, as Harry Zander pinned VMI’s Kyle Elgert in 1:14, giving the Patriots a four-point cushion (23-19) headed into the final match.
That match pitted Barrow and Kittrick in the lowest scoring match of the afternoon. Scoreless through one period, Kittrick scored a one-point escape just into the second period, before Barrow did the same in the third. Despite many attempts by Barrow to secure a leg, the match required extra time, before Barrow finally broke the tie with an escape 47 seconds into extra time, providing the final margin.
The Keydets return to action quickly, as they compete in the Virginia Duals on Friday and Saturday, to be held at the Hampton Coliseum. They will kick off the competition by facing Rider at 9 a.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, GMU returns to action Sunday afternoon, as they travel to Washington, D.C. to face American in a dual match at 1 p.m.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Despite forfeiting two weight classes, the Davidson wrestling squad recorded its first two victories of the season on Saturday evening by pulling out a terrific 18-17 triumph over host Duke and a 30-18 match versus Princeton. Sophomore Kevin Cook had the deciding victory in each dual bout, plus had his first career pin in the win over Princeton. Davidson is now 2-3 on the season.
Davidson led Duke 15-11 when Cook took the mat. But without a heavyweight, a six-point forfeit awaited the Wildcats after Cook's 197-pound bout. Cook delivered an 8-4 decision to clinch the first victory of the season for the Wildcats. Davidson also won the previous three bouts, including two one-point decisions, giving Cook the opportunity to come through in the clutch.
Both Princeton and Davidson forfeited two matches, but the Wildcats won four of the remaining six match-ups to score the 12-point triumph. Junior Trebor Clavette and senior Marcus Boyd posted major decisions at 165 and 174, respectively, before Cook pinned his opponent at 184, which clinched the victory for Davidson. Sophomore Sam O'Hair put the stamp on the victory with a major decision of his own at 197.
Davidson wrestles again next weekend at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., on Friday and Saturday.
