Elon Shuts Out Coastal Carolina 2-0 in Women's Soccer Action

ELON, N.C. -- Playing in just her first game of the season, freshman Molly Calpin netted two goals and classmate Lauren Wisniewski grabbed six saves in goal to lead the Elon Phoenix past the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action from Rudd Field on Thursday night. The game marked the first-ever game under the newly installed lights at Rudd Field.

With the victory, Elon improved to 2-3-0 on the season while Coastal fell to 2-2-1. All five of Elon’s contests this season have been shutouts. The Chanticleers had gone 15 consecutive matches without being blanked.

Calpin scored the first goal of her career at the 9:34 mark with an impressive run through three Chant defenders to get off a shot to beat the Coastal keeper.

Less than five minutes into the second period, Calpin struck again. This time Alix Heinicke fed a long ball down the field over the defenders that Calpin collected and dribbled into the left side of the box. From here she beat Jaclyn Stoll to the right for the score.

Wisniewski, who was making just the second start of her collegiate career, stopped six shots to earn the shutout victory. Stoll made no saves on the night as Elon only got off two shots in the match, both for goals.

Coastal held a 17-2 advantage in total shots and a 6-2 edge in shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net throughout the evening.

Elon returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon in a 1:00 p.m. contest with Triad rival High Point from Rudd Field. Coastal Carolina will visit Campbell at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening.
