CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Despite his team being shut out for the first time this season, Lady Mocs head coach J.D. Kyzer was positive about their performance.
“This was the best ball we’ve played this year and probably the last two years,” Kyzer said. “We were better tactically. That first goal was off a corner kick and that’s something we’ve struggled with all season.”
Belmont defeated Chattanooga 2-0 with a pair of second half goals at the North River Soccer Complex Wednesday night to remain undefeated on the season at 4-0-1. It was the first loss for UTC who fall to 2-1-1 on the year.
Belmont outshot the Lady Mocs 17-13 and had nine corner kicks including one at 57:16 that resulted in a goal. Alex Mindel sent a corner kick into the crowd at the goal and Kari Lennon picked up the ball in front of the net for what would prove to be the game winner.
“This is probably Belmont’s best team ever,” Kyzer said. “They’ve picked up a couple of transfers who have really helped them.”
In the 88th minute, the Bruins picked up their second goal to seal the win. Lennon, who transferred from Auburn, stole a pass from the defense and sent the shot into the middle of the net from the left box to tally her second goal of the game.
Chelsea Hurst and Nikki Brannen each took four shots for Chattanooga with two on goal while UTC keeper Stacey Matthiessen made seven saves.
Belmont's keeper Micaela Crowley tallied five saves while Lennon took five shots for the Bruins. Five other Belmont players had two shots apiece. The Bruins had nine shots on goal to the Lady Mocs five.
The Lady Mocs will head to Boone, N.C., to open the Southern Conference portion of its season at Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
