Phil Mitchell Named Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

RUNNER OF THE WEEK

Phil Mitchell ? Appalachian State

Freshman (RS) ? Glastonbury, CT (Glastonbury HS / Iona College) - Exercise Science Major

Mitchell finished third overall, second collegian, at the Blue Ridge Open.  On a new course at the State Farm fields, under very soggy conditions, Mitchell covered the 8000m in 26:14. He led the Mountaineers to a second place finish in a field of nine teams, which included team winner Coastal Carolina and Florida State.

 

Other top performers:

Xavier Rutz, Jr, UNCG (Cary, NC, Green Hope High School - business major) At the Charlotte Relays, Rutz ran a 15:24 5K split to hand off to his teammate in 3rd place. Rutz's time was a McAlpine Park personal record for him by over one minute. Competing teams were UNCG, Davidson, Charlotte, Asheville, and Virginia Intermont.

 

Adam Lindsey, Sr, Elon (Reidsville, NC, Reidsville HS, co-captain majoring in accounting). Lindsey placed third in the South Carolina Invitational 5K with a time of 16:05 and helped lead his team to a first place finish.  The meet consisted of 11 schools, including C of C, Citadel, and Charleston Southern.  Some of the teams were D II.

 

William Wilson, Sr, The Citadel (Columbia, SC, Cardinal Newman High School - business major).  Wilson won the South Carolina Invitational in a time of

15:47 for the 5K course, out-kicking the College of Charleston?s number one runner for the three second victory.  Wilson did not run cross country in high school as he was a soccer player.

 

Max Gustaitis, So, College of Charleston (Bloomington, IN - philosophy major).  Gustaitis finished second overall while running 15:50 for 5K at the USC Gamecock Invitational this past Friday.  He led his team to a second-place finish.  This is Gustaitis' best overall finish as well as his collegiate personal record for 5K.
