Kennesaw State 1, College of Charleston 0 (2OT)
MT. PLEASANT, S.C., September 4, 2006- The College of Charleston women’s soccer lost their first home match of the season in double overtime to Kennesaw State, 1-0, Monday afternoon at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant.
Kennesaw State (2-1-0) scored the only goal of the match in the 119th minute off a corner kick that was headed in by Rebecca Hall. Stephanie Grzeszkowiak was credited with the assist.
CofC (2-1-0) had eight shots in the match, while KSU had 20. Senior Caroline Wertis and sophomore Danielle Jordan led the Cougars with two shots each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Smith played the entire match for CofC and had six saves.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, Sept. 8, when they face UNC Wilmington at Patriots Point at 7 p.m.
Wofford 2, Coastal Carolina 2 (2OT)
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Wofford women's soccer team scored a goal in the second half to tie the game but neither team could add another tally mark on the scoreboard as the Terriers tied Coastal Carolina, 2-2, Monday afternoon at the Big South/SoCon Challenge in Charleston, S.C.
Junior Whitney Steelman tallied her second goal of the season off assists from classmates Sarah Goolsby and Natalie Ferrara at the 55:26 mark to tie the score. Steelman was open near the left post following a cross from the right side.
The Chanticleers claimed the early advantage when Emily McColl converted a Wofford turnover into the game's first score just 25 seconds into the contest. Coastal Carolina (2-1-1) later added its second goal as Ashleigh Gunning slipped the ball into the open net at 25:10.
Junior Jessica Connett gave the Terriers their first equalizier at 13:19 on a Steelman assist. Steelman's direct kick was headed in by Connett for her third goal of the campaign, setting a personal single-season high.
Steelman paced Wofford (1-2-1) with three shots, while Stepheney Gerhardt led Coastal with four attempts.
The Terriers will return to action at 6 p.m. Friday in their home opener when they host Kennesaw State at Snyder Field.
Appalachian State 3, Charleston Southern 2
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Appalachian women?s soccer picked up its first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Charleston Southern in the final match of the Big South/Southern Challenge Monday afternoon. The Mountaineers erased an early deficit with three goals to improve to 1-2 on the season. The loss was CSU?s first of the season, dropping its record to 2-1.
Appalachian got its scoring from six different players with Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla.), Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C.) and Jennifer MacNeill (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) scoring goals while Caroline Lowe (Raleigh, N.C.), Jackie Hoffman (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Paige Morrow (Chapel Hill, N.C.) providing the assists.
Appalachian outshot the Buccaneers, 20-10, and had 13 shots on goal, 10 of which were stopped by CSU netminder Mia Cederholm.
CSU scored late in the third minute of the match on a header from Lindsey Trexler off of Christine Bethke’s corner kick. The Bucs held onto the lead for 16 minutes before Cleary recorded her first goal of the season on a deflected save of Lowe’s shot. The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 35th minute when Murphy booted in another deflected save, this one from Hoffman?s shot. Less than two minutes later MacNeill scored the gamewinner from in front of the goal off a cross from Morrow to give ASU a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
CSU needed just 51 seconds in the second half to pull within a goal on a header from Briana Murphy off of Bethke?s cross. Appalachian shut down CSU?s offense for the remaining 44 minutes while still peppering the Buccaneer goal with shots, but the 3-2 margin held up until the final whistle.
Lowe, a freshman, led all players with seven shots while Cleary added five.
Emma White (Arden, N.C.) stopped five shots in goal for ASU.
The Mountaineers will remain on the road to take on Gardner-Webb on Friday, September 8 at 5 p.m. before returning home to open Southern Conference action on Sunday, September 10 versus Chattanooga at 2 p.m.
