College of Charleston 3, Wofford 0
College of Charleston defeated Wofford 3-0 (30-15, 30-19, 30-17) to remain perfect (4-0) in Southern Conference action and extended its home conference match streak to 48.
The Cougars improved to 10-5 on the season, while the Terriers fell to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in SoCon play.
Charleston was led by Annie Uthe who hit a .750 clip and posted match-high 12 kills.
Lindsay Kane dished out 30 assists and hit .625 on 10 kills. Marie Dobrenz anchored the Cougars with 30 digs, while hitting .500.
Wofford was led by Shanna Hughes with 11 kills on .200 hitting.
Charleston hit .330 as a team, while Wofford hit .043
The Cougars wrap up the weekend with Furman at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Paladins (8-7, 4-0 SoCon), who are also unbeaten in the SoCon, swept The Citadel 3-0 on Friday night.
Appalachian State 3, Elon 2
ELON, N.C. ? Brittany Zahn and Dianna Thomas each recorded three kills in the fifth game to lead Appalachian State to a 16-14 win and a 3-2 victory over Elon on Friday night at Alumni Gym in Southern Conference action. Elon took game one 30-22 before falling in the second game 24-30. The Phoenix dropped the third game 21-30 before rallying in the fourth game to take a 30-28 win and force the decisive fifth game.
Elon jumped to an early 3-1 lead in the fifth game before the Mountaineers tied things up at 4-4. After a 7-7 tie, Elon used a 4-1 run to take a three-point lead at 11-8 on a service ace from Ashley Ruckert. The Mountaineers scored four of the next five points to tie the game 12-12. The two teams traded points until ASU tied the game 14-14 on a kill from Lorelle Rau. With the serve, ASU scored the next two points, on a kill from Zahn and an Elon ball-handling error, to finish the game 16-14 and capture the match.
The Phoenix used a .390 hitting percentage in the first game to take a 30-22 win. Elon committed just four errors with 20 kills on 41 attempts. After an 8-8 tied, Elon took a four-point 13-9 lead behind the serve of Emily Lucci. The Phoenix held onto the lead and led by as much as six at 22-16 on a kill from Juliena Gigon. Elon maintained that edge and closed the game 30-22 on back-to-back kills from Britany Westphal.
In game two, Cassie Engelgau paced the ASU defense with 11 digs to lead the Mountaineers to a 30-24 win. After a 5-5 tied, ASU went on a 6-0 run behind the serve of Thomas to take an 11-5 lead. Appalachian State extended that lead to eight at 17-9 on a kill from Thomas. But down 18-10, Elon scored the next six points to get within two at 18-16. Elon stayed within three and eventually knotted the game 22-22. The Mountaineers took the lead out of the tie and finished the game 30-24 behind the offense of Amy Lewis and Ashley Fliehr.
Up by one point at 9-8 in game three, ASU used a 6-0 run to go ahead 15-8 on a kill from Carla Durham. Durham paced the Mountaineers in the game with six kills. The Mountaineers led by as much as nine at 19-10 on a kill from Lewis before Elon push back within four at 24-20. ASU outscored Elon 6-1 though and finished the game 30-21.
Elon (5-9, 3-2 SoCon) went up 9-5 early in the fourth game before the Mountaineers tied the game 12-12 on a kill from Thomas. The teams traded points as no team led by more than two points. After a 25-25 tie, ASU took a 27-25 lead before Elon tied the game for the 10th time at 27-27 on kills from Ruckert and Lucci. Lucci, who posted seven kills in the game, put Elon ahead 28-27 with a kill. Elon got point 29 from a Westphal kill before ASU earned a point on an Elon service error to put the game with one at 29-28. But Lucci tallied another kill to finish the game 30-28.
Lucci paced Elon with a season-high 18 kills along with 10 digs and seven total blocks. Gigon tallied a .333 hitting percentage with 14 kills and only four errors on 30 attempts while also recording 13 digs and five total blocks. Westphal notched 14 kills for the Phoenix. Emily Downing posted 10 digs and six total blocks. Natalie Moore tallied 33 assists and Emily Regan posted 16.
Zahn posted 17 kills for ASU (10-7, 4-1 SoCon) while Thomas and Durham each added 12 kills and Lewis recorded 11. Thomas also contributed five total blocks. Engelgau led the team with a match-high 23 digs while Fliehr and Rau each added 14 digs and Rachel Gates registered 12. Rau added 48 assists and two service aces along with eight kills.
Elon returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 30 in a 4 p.m. match with Davidson. The Mountaineers will travel to UNC Greensboro and face off with the Spartans at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Furman 3, The Citadel 0
Charleston, S.C. - The Furman volleyball team defeated The Citadel 3-0 on Friday night at McAlister Fieldhouse. The Paladins recorded a .379 hitting percentage and commited only 11 hiting errors.
Furman was led by middle hitters Nicole Palazzo and Kerry Wooten, who each recorded 13 kills on the night. Wooten also added six total blocks (one solo) and one service ace, while Palazzo, the conference leader in hitting percentage, commited just one hitting error on her way to a .600 (13-1-20) hitting percentage.
Kelsey Salava recorded 28 set assists, and Kim Tonkin and Chibuzo Aguocha each tallied three service aces. Stephanie Smith had a game-high 15 defensive saves.
The Citadel was led by Rachel Sanders with six kills on the night. Kim Cooper led the Bulldogs with 10 digs.
With the win, Furman improves to 8-7 overall, 4-0 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel falls to 5-12 on the season, 0-5 in conference action. Furman returns to action tomorrow as the Paladins face College of Charleston at 2 p.m. A College of Charleston win tonight over Wofford means that tomorrow's matchup will feature the final two teams that are undefeated in conference play.
