MT. PLEASANT, S.C., September 3, 2006- The College of Charleston scored three first-half goals against UCF en route to a 5-1 victory to win the 2006 Aaron Olitsky/Nike Memorial Classic. Senior Jeremy Gold, who was named tournament MVP, scored two first half goals
In the third match of the Classic, UNC Wilmington defeated Alabama A&M, 7-1.
Gold scored two first half goals, the first of which occurred in the 4th minute of action to give CofC (3-0-1) an early 1-0 advantage. He also gained an assist in the second goal of the match, which was scored by senior Scott Milroth in the 20th minute. Gold finished his first half scoring by netting a goal in the 23rd minute off an assist from both Milroth and junior Grant Guthrie.
The second half scoring began with a goal for the Cougars by senior Darren Toby in the 49th minute.
UCF (0-4-0) scored their lone goal of the match in the 52nd minute off a strike from Jamal Robinson to make the score 4-1.
Freshman Kareem Yearwood scored the final goal of the match in the 68th minute to give the Cougars the 5-1 advantage.
CofC had 11 shots in the match, while UCF had 14.
Freshman Corbin Waller had ten saves in the match to gain the win.
For the first time since 1996, the Cougars boast a four game unbeaten steak to start the season. The last time CofC won the Classic was in 2003.
Wofford 1, Western Kentucky 1
BOONE, N.C. -- Senior Brandon Lowery scored the game-tying goal in the second half and neither team could add another tally as the Wofford men's soccer team tied Western Kentucky, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at the Broyhill Inn & Conference Center Appalachian Classic in Boone, N.C.
After the Hilltoppers took the early lead, the Terriers' top returning goal scorer responded with the equalizer on a header off a cross from classmate Joel Kozak at 64:09. Lowery's goal is the 12th of his career, moving him into sole possession of second place on the Wofford Division I era (1995-present) goal scoring list behind only Mike Garvich (1996-99) who posted 14 as a Terrier.
Western Kentucky (1-2-1) claimed a 1-0 advantage 5:19 into the contest when Benard Airo fed Daniel Payne. Overall, the Hilltoppers held a 17-8 shot advantage through the 110 minutes with eight attempts coming in the first half.
Thomas Hunter III made his first start in goal for Wofford (1-2-1), playing the entire match, and collected a career-high four saves. Pat Rickman did not notch a save in the cage for WKU.
The Terriers will next play at UNC Asheville Wednesday.
Furman 2, Bowling Green 1
Conway, S.C. ? The Furman men’s soccer team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to down Bowling Green 2-1 at the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational Sunday afternoon at CCU Soccer Field.
Trailing 1-0 at the 41:01 mark, Furman’s Rob Victor headed in the equalizer on assists from Robert Hunter and Mark Futrell to notch his first goal as a Paladin.
Chris Davis put the Paladins ahead at 66:50 on a header off of a pass from Eliot Paschalis.
Ryan Perea scored on an assist from Alec Perea to open the scoring for the Falcons (1-3-0) in the 19th minute.
Goalkeeper Bryan Amos notched three saves to record his second shutout of the season. Furman fashioned a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal and 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Paladins (2-2-0) will return home to host the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational on Friday and Sunday at Stone Soccer Stadium. Furman opens tournament play Friday in a 7:00 p.m. contest against Gardner-Webb.
Coastal Carolina will battle Stetson in the opening game of the tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Elon 3, Charlotte 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Elon improved to 4-0-0 in men's soccer action as the Phoenix received goals from Eric Sass, Steven Kinney and Kiki Willis to defeat the Charlotte 49ers (1-2-1) by a 3-1 score in the Davidson adidas Classic. Elon was the only undefeated team in the tournament and freshman Nick Aparicio earned MVP honors after his four-point weekend.
Sass netted Elon's first goal in the 41st minute from the right side off an assist from Matt Bengston. The score was the first of the season for the senior.
Just over a minute later, the 49ers evened the score when Jeff Favitta put a shot through the Elon keeper's legs off a pass from Evan Harding.
Less than nine minutes into the second stanza, Kinney struck with the eventual game-winner. Kinney beat the keeper with a header off a free kick from Aparicio from 45-yards out.
Aparicio and Justin Wyatt each were credited with assists on Willis' insurance goal in the 79th minute. The header goal was the second goal of the season for Willis.
Kyle Boerner went the distance in net for Elon, making six saves on the afternoon. His counterpart, Tim Seibert corralled three saves for Charlotte.
Assistant coach Dustin Fonder said, "The boys battled hard against a good Charlotte team today. We're excited to come out of the tournament as the champions and we look forward to
Wednesday afternoon's matchup with nationally-ranked Old Dominion."
Along with Aparicio, Elon was represented by Willis, Kinney and Brett Paschall on the all-tournament team.
Appalachian State 1, Winthrop 0
BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University men’s soccer captured the Broyhill Inn Appalachian Classic title and moved to 4-0 on the season with a 1-0 win over Winthrop Sunday afternoon.
The tournament title is the second for the Mountaineers this season after winning the Radford Tournament last weekend. Corey Lugger (Irmo, S.C.) earned the tournament offensive MVP while goalkeeper Greg Walters (Raleigh, N.C.) earned defensive honors after recording a shutout in the championship match.
The 4-0 start marks the Apps’ best start since 1998 a team has started 4-0-0 and just the fourth time in school history the feat has been accomplished.
Appalachian got the game-winning goal in the 70th minute off an indirect free kick from Michael Walters (Raleigh, N.C.) that was set up by
Juan Obregon (Castle Rock, Colo.). Walters’ kick from the top of the box was initially stopped by the goalkeeper on the far side of the goal, but he couldn’t handle the hard kick as the deflection crossed the endline. The shot was one of Walters’s match-high six.
Winthrop controlled the opening of the first half but couldn’t find a way to put the ball past Greg Walters who had a handful of impressive saves to preserve the shutout, his second on the season.
The Mountaineers came out rejuvenated in the second half and were able to outplay
the speedy Eagles for much of the period. At the final whistle the match proved to be as closely played as the score indicated with both teams recording 19 shots and Appalachian putting seven on net to Wintrhop’s six. Appalachian also had a 9-8 advantage in corners.
Daniel Revivo led the Eagles with five shots, but missed a large part of the second half with a head injury. Issac Saidi had four shots after scoring two goals against Wofford on Friday.
Appalachian’s Corey Lugger earned offensive MVP honors after a four-point night on Friday with a goal and two assists in ASU’s 4-1 win over Western Kentucky. He had three shots in Sunday’s win and set up the majority of ASU’s scoring opportunities on corner kicks. Greg Walters
had six saves in Sunday’s shutout and four on Friday while only allowing one goal in two starts. Lugger was joined by Sean Sassano (Gastonia, N.C.) and Michael Walters on the all-tournament team.
Appalachian will go for its fifth win on September 6 at High Point. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
ASU is 12-2 all-time against the Panthers.
Davidson 3, Loyola 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. Three second half goals including Tom Lavan’s double lifted the Davidson Wildcats to a 3-0 blanking of Loyola (Chicago) in men’s soccer action and the final round of the third annual Davidson adidas Classic at Alumni Stadium Sunday afternoon. The victory was the first of the 2006 campaign for the Wildcats as they improve to 1-3-0, while Loyola falls to an identical mark overall.
With the game scoreless well into the second stanza, Lavan finally put the Wildcats on the board in the 76th minute with a right footed strike from seven yards out that found the top right corner of the net. Mac Wilkie, who led the club in assists a season ago with six, set up the eventual game-winner with a through ball to the cutting Lavan.
“I thought today’s victory was a well earned win,” commented Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Tom Lavan stepped up with some special plays when we needed them most.”
Lavan, a native of Omaha, Neb. struck again just nine minutes later to give Davidson a comfortable 2-0 lead with 4:17 left in the contest. The goal was the ninth of his career and the second time in a Wildcat uniform Lavan has scored a pair of goals in a match.
For the second match in a row the Wildcats’ controlled the shot column recording an 18-7 advantage, including six attempts on goal.
“Our players are too talented and have worked too hard for us not to get that first win after the way we’ve played thus far. We know that if we play the way we are capable we have a chance to win every game.”
The Wildcats’ added an insurance goal in the 89th minute when Hoak played a free kick following a Loyola foul into the box from 40 yards out finding Tim Roark, who chested it in on his first career touch.
Davidson missed a golden opportunity to grab a 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute when Charlie Reiter, making his first career start, played a cross into the box to Hoak, who headed it just high of frame. With 15:30 left in the first period, David Sartorio had a chance of his own for Davidson, when his blast from the top of the 18 sailed high.
Despite being outshot by a count of 7-3 in the opening period, Loyola’s best chance to strike in the first half came when Michael Ferguson’s rip from 25 yards out hit the underneath the cross bar and was then cleared by a Wildcat defender before going over the goal line.
At the 23:06 mark in the second half, Hoak was unable to capitalize another great Wildcat scoring chance when fellow forward Machel Turner set him up with a one-on-one scoring chance with Loyola keeper Sean Bond, who made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
Bond, making his second career start after a shutout Friday evening in a 1-0 win over Charlotte, finished the contests with three saves. Davidson’s Ben Ashton turned away two shots en route to his first clean sheet of the season and sixth of his career.
“I thought our defense was tremendous today, and I’m proud of their effort this afternoon. A shutout will help boost their confidence.”
Davidson returns to action Friday, September 8 when it battles James Madison in the opening round of the Charlotte JAKO Invitational at 5 p.m. Loyola will also take to the field again next Friday as it hosts Buffalo in an 8 p.m. contest.
“Tournaments are always exciting, said Coach Spear. “We look forward to playing at Charlotte’s excellent facility next weekend. James Madison is another quality opponent for us to take on and hopefully we can carry this momentum into next weekend’s event.”
Elon’s Nick Aparicio was named the 2006 Davidson adidas Classic Tournament MVP and the following players were named to the All-Tournament team; Kick Willis (Elon), Steven Kinney (Elon), Brett Paschall (Elon), Tom Lavan (Davidson), Robby Hoak (Davidson), David Sartorio (Davidson), Alex Jones (Loyola), Sean Bond (Loyola), Evan Harding (Charlotte) and Michael Rose (Charlotte).
Georgia Southern 2, Stetson 1 (OT)
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Kellen Stanley netted the game-winning goal, Sunday in a 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Stetson University. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season and the Hatters fall to 1-3.
Stanley (Savannah, Ga.) sealed the victory at the 91:13 mark after converting a right-to-left-side passing scheme from teammates Daniel Smith (Marietta, Ga.) and Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.). It was Stanley’s first goal of the year and Cox’s second assist of the day.
The Hatters controlled the flow of the game in the first half, while the Eagles struggled to get a good look at the net, firing only two shots. The Hatters converted six first-half shots into a goal at the 24:20 mark. After finding himself unmarked in the box, Stetson forward Brian Bell (Bredenton, Fla.) collected a pass from teammate Victor Webb (Birmingham, England), shot and netted the game’s first goal. The Hatters led 1-0 going into the locker room.
Noting the absence of shots on goal, Head Coach Kevin Kennedy saw the need for a change in the strategy and encouraged his players to “try and register some good shots and test the keeper.”
The Eagles responded to the coach’s call and changed the momentum. In the 62nd minute, freshman Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) sent a long pass into the box, aiming for teammate Julian Donaldson (Aurora, Colo.). Donaldson beat the keeper to the ball and knocked in the Eagles first goal on the day, tying the match at 1-1.
Defensively, senior Brad Mitchum (Snelllville, Ga.) cleared a dangerous pass that crossed the goal box, heading it out of play with 15 minutes left in regulation, and the Eagles and Hatters went into extra time. Senior keeper Adam Webb (Melbourne, Fla.) had five saves on the day.
Kennedy said he was pleased with the Eagles’ play in the second half, noting that the players’ maturity and experience helped turn the momentum in their favor.
Georgia Southern next heads to Shreveport, La. for a pair of matches in the Centenary Classic, September 8-9. The Eagles face Oral Roberts on Friday at 7 p.m., and then battle host Centenary on Saturday at 9:15 p.m.
