Macon, Ga. ? Furman scored three second half goals and keeper Briana da Mota notched her second shutout of the weekend as the Lady Paladins downed Tennessee Tech 4-0 to claim the LQ Cup title at Mercer University on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Claire Richards opened the scoring with the eventual game-winning goal in the 34th minute. After a pass from Katie Tucker, Richards raced behind the Golden Eagles’ defense and lobbed a shot into the corner for her first collegiate goal.
The Lady Paladins, who outshot Tennessee Tech 20-5, unloaded on the Golden Eagles with three goals in a seven-minute span during the second half.
Gena Villari buried a free kick from the right side at the 70:03 mark then duplicated the effort scoring on a free kick from the left side at 73:59.
Junior Anna Betton capped the scoring at 76:50. Villari delivered a corner kick into the box and Stacy Simpson touched the ball to Betton who netted her first goal of the season.
Da Mota stretched her shutout streak in goal to 180 minutes by saving four Tennessee Tech shots to earn the clean sheet.
The win improves the Lady Paladins to 2-2-0 on the season while TTU falls to 0-4-0.
Furman will open its home schedule next weekend when it hosts the 2nd Annual Carolinas’ Cup at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium. Tournament play opens Saturday with Charlotte vs. South Carolina at 12:30 p.m. followed by Furman taking on nationally-ranked Clemson at 3:00 p.m.
The tournament concludes on September 11, with Charlotte vs. Clemson at 5:00 p.m. and Furman vs. South Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
Tulsa 5, Georgia Southern 0
TULSA, Okla. --- Tulsa freshmen Kayla Chambers,Shannon Locke and Megan Cash, and sophomore Kristina Corona
each registered a goal, while Georgia Southern scored an own goal to lead the Tulsa women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over the Eagles on Sunday afternoon in the Grover Classic. The classic was hosted by TU at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
Chambers knocked in a header off a corner kick from freshman Sarah Greene in the 43rd minute to put Tulsa on the board, and less than two minutes later, Locke punched in a goal from five yards out on the right side to give the Golden Hurricane a two-goal cushion. Both goals were career firsts for the TU duo.
To register her third goal this season, Cash fired into an open net after out-maneuvering GSU goalie Lauren Santos, while Corona earned her second career goal and first goal this season on a cross from Stephanie Johnson in the 71st minute.
Junior goalkeeper Meredith Hart picked up one save today, as TU out-shot the Eagles 20-3, including an 11-to-1 ratio in shots on goal. She also recorded her second shutout of the season and 11th of her career.
UNC Wilmington 2, Davidson 0
WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington's Jenny Cauble scored her first goal of the season and Erica Rodgers netted her first career-goal as the Davidson College women's soccer team fell by the score of 2-0 on Sunday, Sept. 3.
Davidson dropped to 0-2-1, while UNC Wilmington defeated its third Southern Conference opponent to improve to 3-1.
Both squads played a scoreless first half, despite the Seahawks out-shooting Davidson by the count of 9-2.
UNCW came out strong to start the second period as Cauble found the back of the net less than two minutes into the half at the 46:38 mark. Cauble took a pass from Kelly Renkin and scored with a shot from the middle of the box over the top of Wildcat goalkeeper junior Bevin English's (Charleston, S.C.) head to give UNCW a 1-0 advantage.
The game stayed that way till the 85th minute when Rodgers scored on an unassisted goal to the right side of the English for the final score of 2-0.
The Wildcats' offense was held in check all day, getting only five shots off with three of them being on goal. The defense did its best to keep the Seahawks from adding any more goals to the two they scored as UNCW recorded
19 shots, 10 of them on goal.
English registered a season-high eight saves on the afternoon for Davidson and UNC Wilmington's Jamie Balzarini posted her second straight shutout of her career while recording three saves.
Davidson remains on the road, heading to High Point to take on the Panthers, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. and then to Gardner-Webb for a matchup against the Bulldogs on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. The Wildcats are a combined 9-1 all-time against both schools.
Chattanooga 1, UT-Martin 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Chattanooga and UT-Martin locked in a defensive struggle Sunday afternoon, leading to a 1-1 double-overtime deadlock in a non-conference matchup at the North River Soccer Complex. The Skyhawks are still looking for their first victory at 0-3-1.
Chattanooga freshman Marlee Jenkins pushed a header past Skyhawk keeper Cara Sullivan late in the game to put the Lady Mocs up 1-0 at the 77:57 mark. Brandie Skipworth chipped the ball toward the goal and Nikki Brannen sent it to Jenkins who recorded the first goal of her collegiate career.
Martin responded with a score off a corner kick at 80:26 to tie it up. Jamie Furstenburg sent the corner into the crowd at the goal. Caitlin Smith picked it up and sent a header past the UTC defense to tie it up 1-1. Both teams had opportunities to score in the final minutes, but failed to capitalize.
Chattanooga got off 10 shots in the first half to Martin’s eight, but UTM bounced back with 11 shots in the second allowing the Lady Mocs just six attempts at goal. In the first overtime, both teams got off just two shots with the Lady Mocs taking control early. The Skyhawks had six shot attempts in the second half, but we’re held off by a stubborn Lady Mocs defense that has allowed each of its first three opponents this season just one goal.
UT-Martin outshot the Lady Mocs 27-19 and held Chattanooga to just one shot in the second overtime. Senior keeper Stacey Matthiessen tallied 12 saves including two acrobatic attempts to keep the Skyhawks in check. Sullivan had nine saves for UTM.
Chattanooga’s Melyna Valdez led the way with six shots, while sophomore Nikki Brannen tallied five and Chelsea Hurst had four. Martin’s Katie Behrens had nine shot attempts on the day with Erin Jordan recording four.
Chattanooga will remain at home hosting in-state foe Belmont Wednesday night at the North River Soccer Complex. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
Miami 3, UNC Greensboro 1
GREENSBORO, NC ? Miami’s Paulelett Ricks-Chambers scores two goals in the Hurricanes 3-1 win over the UNC Greensboro Spartans at the UNCG Women’s Soccer Classic on Sunday.
The Hurricanes (4-0-0) grabbed the early one goal advantage in the 24th minute when Ricks-Chambers gathered her first goal of the match. Ricks-Chambers collected the rebound after a Meghan McKinsey goal and shot it past Spartan keeper Katherine Ryan. The Hurricanes would go into the half up 1-0.
Ricks-Chambers got her second goal of the game four minutes into the second half when she fired a shot from 18 feet out into the back of the net. Miami would score again in the 75th minute when Sammy Sanderson corralled the ball off the rebound and tapped the ball into Julia Demetrius who made contact to give Miami a three-goal advantage.
With eight minutes left, Spartan senior Deven Beachum put UNCG on the board. Junior Karla Davis sent a corner kick into the box where senior Emilie Stewart tapped a shot that Miami’s keeper, Lauren McAdam, deflected back into the field of play. Beachum was there for the rebound and sent the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
UNCG (0-4-0) held a 17-14 shot advantage, including four shots from freshman Jennifer Bronson. Ryan collected five saves for UNCG,
Bronson and fellow freshman, Lauren Lopez along with senior Carolyn Lindsey were named to the UNCG Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Spartans returns to action on Friday when they travel to Knoxville, TN for the Tennessee Tournament as they face off with host Tennessee. Kick off set for 8pm.
NC State 4, Elon 0
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The North Carolina State women’s soccer team (3-0-1) scored four goals against Elon (1-3-0) en route to a 4-0 victory, Sunday, September 3, at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Senior Carol Tognetti posted two of the goals, and sophomore Tami Krzeszewski and freshman Chantalle Dugas each had one. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors recorded her 13th career shutout.
NC State’s offense controlled the game in the first half by posting 16 shots. In the 29th minute, junior Jessica O'Rourke attempted to score from 30 yards out, but the ball hit the post, leaving the game scoreless. Another scoring attempt for the Pack came during the 35th minute when freshman Katie Ruiz had a corner kick, but the end swinger cleared off the back line.
After NC State had posted 13 shots, Tognetti netted the first goal of the game at 38:51. After a pass from O’Rourke, Krzeszewski crossed the ball in front of the goal and Tognetti knocked it in low for the first Wolfpack first half goal of the season. The NC State defense prevented Elon from posting any shots during the half.
In the second half, Elon came out looking to even things up, but the NC State offense continued to keep the pressure on the Phoenix. Krzeszewski posted her first goal of the season in the 49th minute after a cross from Gia Cipollini. Four minutes later, Tognetti obtained her second goal of the game with a shot from 30 yards out. The Pack looked to score again at 60:20 with a shot from freshman Briana Cunningham, but the ball bounced off the left post. At the 83-minute mark, Dugas attained her first goal of the season on a header off the cross from Cunningham, and secured the final score, 4-0.
In goal for Elon, Lauren Wisniewski corralled 11 saves on the afternoon. It was the first career appearance for the freshman.
The Phoenix returns to action on Thursday evening when it hosts Coastal Carolina at 7:00 p.m. in what will be the first-ever night game from Rudd Field.
