Furman 0, Georgia Southern 0 (2OT)
STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team shutout their opponents for the third consecutive game, Wednesday night, holding Southern Conference opponent Furman to a scoreless tie at Eagle Field.
The Paladins (5-4-1, 0-1-1) and Eagles (5-2-2, 1-0-2), both ranked No. 9 and No. 10, respectively in the South Regional rankings, shot a combined 26 shots. But it was the defense of both teams that made the difference, allowing a combined five shots on goal.
Led by senior keeper Adam Webb (Melbourne, Fla.), who had three saves on the night, the Eagles defense foiled several of Furman’s offensive attacks in dangerous territory. Senior Brad Mitchum (Snellville, Ga.) and junior Kim Kroken (Oslo, Norway) played strong on defense, blocking several shots and clearing away many loose balls. Webb improved his shutout record to three games, successfully fending off shots in 310 minutes of play, while grabbing 14 saves.
“We expected a defensive battle,” said head coach Kevin Kennedy. “Furman is one of the very best teams we’ve played this year.”
Offensively, Furman had possession most of the first half, and was close to netting the first goal in the 18th minute when Dominic Cianciarulo fired a rocket that hit the left post. The Paladins took 14 total shots, 11 in the first 90 minutes of play.
Senior Jason Tindall (Roswell, Ga.) created a solid opportunity in the 30th minute, shooting a bullet from the right side. But Furman’s keeper, Bryan Amos, who currently leads the Southern Conference in shutouts (5), was there to make the save. Amos had three saves on the night.
Freshman Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore Kellen Stanley (Savannah, Ga.) also produced several shots for the Eagles - a combined seven total.
The stalemate was the third game this season that the Eagles have extended play into extra periods, with a 1-0-2 record when going into overtime. Each of those games have been at home.
The Eagles return back to Eagle Field for a non-conference match versus Winthrop, Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
