BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian women?s soccer continued to build momentum as the season moves on with its fourth-straight victory and third consecutive shutout after defeating visiting VMI, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Stadium. Paige Morrow (Chapel Hill, N.C.) led the Mountaineers with two first-half goals in the victory.
Appalachian?s record improves to 6-4-0 with the non-conference win, while the Keydets fall to 3-5-0 overall. The Mountaineers outshot VMI by a 21-6 margin and had 16 shots on goal. VMI goalkeeper Kathleen Underwood made 11 saves in the losing effort.
Morrow scored her first goal of the afternoon in the ninth minute when what appeared to be a cross from deep on the near side snuck into the far upper corner of the goal. Twenty-two minutes later Morrow would make a nearly identical play, only from closer in, for her second goal of the match and third of the season. Kalin Bradley (Parkland, Fla.) recorded the assist on the second tally.
ASU carried the 2-0 lead through halftime and into the 49th minute when Beth Miller (Belmont, N.C.) scored her third goal of the year. Miller booted Emily Dixon?s (Alpharetta, Ga.) pass along the endline into net. The Apps added another goal in the 77th minute when Lindsay Moore (Tampa, Fla.) dribbled through the VMI defense and knocked a shot into the upper near corner to give ASU the final 4-0 victory.
Emma White (Arden, N.C.) only had to stop one shot on goal to pick up her fourth shutout of the season. Eleven Mountaineers recorded shots in the win with Morrow and Moore each taking a match-high four. Audrey Falconi took two shots for the Keydets.
Appalachian will jump back into Southern Conference play on Thursday, September 28 with a home match against defending SoCon Champion Davidson.
Kickoff with the Wildcats is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
College of Charleston 1, Charleston Southern 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women’s soccer team retained the Silver Cup Tuesday afternoon by earning a tie in their match at Charleston Southern, 1-1. The Cougars will keep the Cup for the sixth consecutive year.
Freshman Chrissy Caruso scored the first goal of the match in the first minute of action to give CofC (2-4-2) an early, 1-0 advantage. Senior Teryn Schuetz received credit for the assist.
CofC had an active offensive first half, attempting nine shots and gaining four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of the match. Charleston Southern (3-4-2) was only able to gain four shots and one corner kick in the first half.
The game was played at a slower pace in the second half and both teams only attempted five shots combined.
Lindsey Trexler scored the equalizer for Charleston Southern in the 56th minute of action, through an assist by Alyssa Clay.
Neither team was able to gain the advantage through the next 34 minutes, or in either overtime period.
“Every year we play Charleston Southern, it’s a battle every minute of the match,” said CofC head coach Kevin Dempsey. “I’m proud of our effort, especially because we’re shorthanded right now with injuries and we never gave up.”
CofC had fifteen shots overall in the match, while Charleston Southern had 8. CofC also had 7 corner kicks in the match, while Charleston Southern had 1.
Freshman Sarah Wiggers had four saves in the match.
“This match was good preparation for our conference season, which starts in a few days,” said Dempsey. “I’m very proud to retain the Silver Cup for the College of Charleston and our fans.”
The two schools have faced each other every year since 1993.
CofC beat Charleston Southern 1-0 on Oct. 16, 2001, to gain possession of the Silver Cup. The last time Charleston Southern beat CofC in a match was on Oct. 21, 1998.
The matches in the years 1999 and 2000 ended in ties; hence Charleston Southern retained the Cup after those matches.
The Cougars return to action on Sept. 29 when they take on the Elon Phoenix in Elon, N.C. It will be the College of Charleston’s first SoCon match of the season. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m.
Coastal Carolina 2, The Citadel 0
Charleston, S.C. ? Coastal Carolina recorded a goal in each half as the Chanticleers defeated The Citadel, 2-0 in women’s soccer action Tuesday afternoon at WLI Field. Blair Monroe netted what proved to be the game-winner for the Chanticleers in the 17th minute of regulation.
Coastal Carolina (7-2-1) struck first within the first 20 minutes of play as Chelsea Terry made a pass from midfield that landed in front of the goal for Blair Monroe to knock it in for her seventh score of the season.
The Citadel (1-9-1) had a chance to tie it up on a penalty kick later in the half after Rachelle Ornelas was fouled inside the box. Sarah Burke took the shot for the Dogs but Chanticleer keeper Jaclyn Stoll made the stop to preserve the shutout.
Coastal’s second goal of the game came with only 49 seconds left on the clock. Simone Borucinski sailed a ball into the air from midfield that just happened to fall over the head of Bulldog keeper Emily Green and into the net.
“I failed to prepare the team properly for this game,” said head coach Bob Winch. “We will be better prepared for the Georgia Southern game on Friday. Coastal Carolina beat us in every facet of the game soccer today.”
Burke was responsible for both of The Citadel’s shots, while Coastal tallied 24 total shots, 16 of which were on goal. The Chanticleers enjoyed a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks as Green collected a season and career-high 14 saves for the Bulldogs.
The Citadel will return to Southern Conference action this Friday, Sept. 29 as they host Georgia Southern at 5 p.m. at WLI Field.
Western Carolina 3, UNC Asheville 0
Cullowhee, N.C. ? Western Carolina utilized its set pieces and intense pressure for 90 minutes to blank mountain-rival, UNC Asheville, 3-0, Tuesday night in non-conference women’s soccer action at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Three Catamounts recorded goals as WCU ran its unbeaten streak to four matches.
“I think this is the best game we have put together as a team this season,” said second-year head coach Tammy DeCesare. “This was our best win ? a well earned team win. But, with that having been said, I still feel that we have more to work on defensively. As far as an attack, that’s the most dangerous we have looked in ever facet of the game, especially the corners. We looked like we could have scored on every corner opportunity tonight.”
The Catamounts, who improved to 5-4-1 on the season, capitalized on the early pressure, pushing the ball into the offensive third and eventually drawing a corner kick inside the first seven minutes. From the set piece, sophomore Arlan Whittle dropped a pass to freshman Shanna Schmoker. The ball found its way back to Whittle, who sent a high cross to the far side of the box where junior Heather Dittmer flicked it in on the header in traffic for the early lead at the 6:51 mark.
Western broke through to push the advantage to two goals in the 31st minute of play, with Whittle again providing the setup. Following a Bulldog foul and a free kick opportunity for the Catamounts, sophomore Buki Baruwa fired a shot on goal which was deflected over the cross bar by a UNCA defender resulting in a WCU corner kick. On the set piece, Whittle played the to the far back corner of the box where Baruwa headed it on to a waiting Rachael Shomper who planted it in the left hand corner of the cage for her first collegiate score.
In the second half, Western managed to put the match out of reach with an unassisted score by senior Meghan Reilly in the 56th minute. Freshman Jenny Matteson uncorked a shot from 25 yards out that sailed high and ricocheted off the lower portion of the cross bar, bouncing straight down where it careened off the ?Dogs keeper, Veronica Lazar. The rookie net minder could not control the hot shot and the rebound rolled five feet out in front of the goal mouth where Reilly, on a dead sprint, buried a shot amidst a collision with Lazar.
For the remainder of the match, Western managed to play solid defense, limiting UNCA to one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes while accruing nine in the final segment and a 14-to-4 edge for the match. The Catamounts also held a decisive 7-to-2 edge in corner kicks, with two of the three scores coming as a direct result.
Dittmer, who was credited with the game-winning goal, led all players with three shots ? all of which were on goal ? and her classmate, Baruwa, recorded a pair as 11 Catamounts fired shots in the victory.
Senior goalkeeper Alesha Row played nearly 79 minutes in the shutout, with freshman Kelly Gulledge entering the match inside the final 12 minutes in the win. Row, who was credited with the win, only had to make two saves while Gulledge was never challenged by the Bulldogs thanks in part to the stingy Catamount defense.
UNC Asheville (3-3-1) had four players each record one shot on the night, while Lazar was saddled with her second loss in four career matches, standing at 1-2-1. The Bulldogs’ leading scorer, Robyn Busha, was held to one shot on goal, which was from 30 yards away, and only played sparingly in the second half.
Western Carolina returns to conference action this Friday night, hosting the Furman Lady Paladins in a rematch of last year’s Southern Conference championship. In honor of Hispanic History month, Friday night’s match has been deemed “Salsa Night,” with FREE chips and salsa from El Pacifico restaurant in Sylva and a Hispanic trio group performing at half time. Match time is set for 7:00 pm as the Catamounts battle the Lady Paladins in Cullowhee.
