SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today named its Football Players of the Week for games played on September 23. Furman’s Jerome Felton was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week while Appalachian State’s Jeremy Wiggins earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Appalachian State’s Armanti Edwards earned the Freshman of the Week award.
Felton, a junior from Madisonville, Tenn., led the Paladins to a 42-7 SoCon opener win over Western Carolina on Saturday. The fullback rushed for 102 yards on 20 carries and broke the Southern Conference and Furman single-game record for rushing touchdowns with six in the game. He scored five of his six touchdowns in the first half and accounted for 36 of Furman’s 42 points against the Catamounts. The six TD’s shattered the longest standing Furman single-game record, which was set in 1915. Felton also tied GSU’s Adrian Peterson for most rushing touchdowns in a half. Felton has scored 10 touchdowns in Furman’s last two games.

Wiggins, a senior from Macon, Ga., anchored the Mountaineer defense on Saturday in a 41-6 win over Gardner-Webb. The defensive back picked up two interceptions in the first half on Gardner-Webb’s second and third series of the game. He added seven tackles on the evening, including one behind the line of scrimmage. Wiggins became the first Mountaineer to pick off two passes in a single game since Corey Lynch had two picks against Coastal Carolina on September 17, 2005.
Other top performers include Chattanooga’s Jason Vincent and Georgia Southern’s Brandon Jackson.
Edwards, a freshman from Greenwood, S.C., led the Mountaineer offense in the win over Gardner-Webb. The quarterback picked up 296 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns in the win. He completed 16-of-22 passes for 195 yards and added 101 rushing yards on 13 carries. He became the first Mountaineer in five games to rush for 100 yards and was the first true freshman quarterback from ASU to win two games since D.J. Campbell in
