New Mexico 3, College of Charleston 2
Albuquerque, N.M. - The College of Charleston men’s soccer team was defeated by No. 18-ranked New Mexico, 3-2, in the finale of the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sunday.
CofC (5-4-1) had two second-half goals and even led the match 2-1, but New Mexico (5-2-2) scored the final two goals of the match to gain the win.
Chris Wright scored the first goal of the match for New Mexico in the third minute of action to give the Lobos a 1-0 advantage.
Senior Darren Toby scored his third goal of the season in the 52nd minute to tie the match for the Cougars. Sophomore John Bello was credited with the assist.
Senior Jeremy Gold scored an unassisted goal, his fifth of the season, in the 56th minute to give the Cougars the lead, 2-1.
New Mexico responded in the 62nd minute with a goal by Brandon Barklage to tie the match, 2-2.
Andrew Boyens scored the game-winning goal for New Mexico in the 73rd minute.
CofC had 9 shots in the match, while New Mexico had 18.
Junior Corbin Waller had six saves in the match for the Cougars.
The Cougars returns to action on Sept. 27 against SoCon rival Wofford. The match will be the College of Charleston’s SoCon season opener and the first home match for the Cougars since Sept. 3. The match will take place at Patriot’s Point and begin at 6 p.m.
Belmont 2, Wofford 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Wofford men's soccer team could not overcome two second half goals by host Belmont as the Bruins captured a 2-0 triumph against the Terriers Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
After the teams entered halftime scoreless, Amr Ali gave Belmont (4-5-1) its first tally at 62:26 when he placed the ball in the upper right corner of the cage off assists from Derrick Henry and Ian Schinelli.
Schinelli then added an unassisted score to seal the victory with just under a minute and a half remaining, at 88:39.
Wofford (2-6-1) received seven saves in net from freshman Thomas Hunter III, while Kyle Roelke stopped four Terrier shots in the shutout. The Bruins held a 19-9 shot advantage in the contest.
Next on the docket for the Terriers is their Southern Conference opener, as they will travel to Charleston, S.C., Wednesday to face College of Charleston at 6 p.m.
