Davidson 1, UC Santa Barbara 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. Coming off a thrilling 3-0 win over cross-county rival Charlotte in its home opener on Tuesday night, the Davidson women's soccer kept its winning ways going at home thanks to sophomore Melanne Smith's (Bloomfield Township, Mich.) third goal of the season for a 1-0 win over Big West foe UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at Alumni Stadium. Davidson, who earned its first win ever against UCSB, improved to 4-3-1 on the season, while UC Santa Barbara dropped to 2-3-3.
At first it looked like the Gauchos would strike early as they got off three shots in the first three minutes of the contest, while also getting three of their four first-half corner kicks in the first five minutes of play. But, Davidson's defense hung tight and started to gain back some of the momentum.
Senior Heidi Wilbrandt (Woodstock, Ill.) started the momentum change when she almost got her first goal of the season and the ?Cats first goal of the stanza when she had a direct kick on goal, but was denied by goalie Tammy Lenham. Wilbrandt broke free from her defender on the left side near the post and took a shot, but Lenham was right there to scoop the ball up.
Smith then made sure this time Lenham would not deny the Wildcats their first marker of the contest. Junior Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) set the goal up by twice sending a cross into the box, with the second cross finding Smith. The sophomore took a shot, but had it blocked by Lenham, who was not able to secure the ball, allowing Smith to find the rebound and blast it in from the middle of the box for the Wildcats first and only goal of the contest.
The Gauchos, who pressured the Wildcat defense in the later part of the second stanza, had one very good chance of forcing overtime with just under three minutes remaining when they worked the ball down to the Wildcat box.
After UCSB passed the ball around in the box, Allie Kueny gather it in and tried to hit a high shot over English's head, but the junior reached high and stretched her arms out, knocking the ball over the goal for a one of her best saves of the night.
Davidson won in the shots department with an 11-8 advantage, while UCSB came up with six corner kicks to the Wildcats two.
English came up with a game-high five saves to push her season total to 34.
Lenham earned four saves for the Gauchos in the loss.
Davidson will now open Southern Conference play with a trip to Statesboro, Ga. on Sunday, Sept. 24 for a matchup against the 2-5-1 Georgia Southern Eagles at 1 p.m. Last year, the Wildcats defeated the Eagles 3-0 at Alumni Stadium and lead the all-time series 13-7.
