STATESBORO, GA ? Scott Jones celebrated his 23rd birthday with a goal and Henning Jonasson and Thomas Campbell each had a goal and an assist as UNC Greensboro broke out of a scoring drought with a 4-0 win over Coastal Carolina in men’s soccer action at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

 

A crowd of 1,671 watched UNCG (5-4-1) snap a three-game winless streak and Coastal Carolina (4-4-2) extend its winless skid to five straight (0-3-2).

The Spartans had scored just one goal in their last three matches, including their first back-to-back shutouts since 1995, but broke out against the Chanticleers early on Friday night in a match televised internationally by Fox Soccer Channel.

 

Jones, a Hermann Trophy candidate from Dallas, TX got the scoring started at 11:54. After a feed from Henning Jonasson, Jones blasted a one-timer from 16 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal. It was Jones’

third goal of the season and gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

 

Jonasson and Jones sort of teamed up for UNCG’s second goal, as well. Jones was making a run through the box when he was taken down by a Coastal Carolina defender. The foul resulted in a penalty kick, which Jonasson promptly blasted into the net for a 2-0 advantage at 16:29.

 

The scored stayed that way until midway through the second half. Jokull Elisabetarson connected from eight yards out on a one-timer after a pass from Campbell to put the game virtually out of reach, 3-0, at the 66:09 mark. It was the first goal of the season for the native of Iceland.

 

Campbell closed out the scoring at 79:20. Hermann Trophy candidate Randi Patterson flicked the ball to Campbell, who hit a one-timer into the left corner from 10 yards out for his second goal of the season.

 

Freshman goalkeeper Nate Berry recorded his second consecutive shutout and third of the season, logging five saves in the process. UNCG had a 14-12 advantage in shots on goal. Coastal Carolina held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

 

The Spartans, who avoided their first four match winless streak since 1980 with the win, return to action on Tuesday when they travel to conference rival Davidson for a 7 pm match.

 

St. Francis (Pa.) 1, College of Charleston 0

Albuquerque, N.M. - The College of Charleston men’s soccer team suffered a bitter defeat to St. Francis (Pa.), 1-0, in the first match of the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association Classic (NMSAC) in Albuquerque, N.M.

 

Aaron Clapham scored the only goal in the match for St. Francis (3-5-0) in the 67th minute.  The goal was assisted by Brent Brockman.

 

CofC (5-3-1) had 13 shots in the match, while St. Francis had eight.  The Cougars also had five corner kicks in the match, in comparison to St. Francis’ three.

 

Senior Darren Toby had four shots in the match, while freshman Kareem Yearwood had three for CofC.

 

Junior Corbin Waller had two saves in the match for the College of Charleston.

 

The Cougars return to action Sunday in the concluding match of the NMSAC, when they face host institution, the18th-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos.  The match will begin at 3 p.m.

 

Lipscomb 3, Wofford 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- An overtime goal by Ben Page, his second tally of the game, capped a comeback by host Lipscomb as the Bisons knocked off Wofford in men's soccer action, 3-2, Friday evening at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

Page scored the game winner at 98:59 on a penalty kick past Terrier goalkeeper Russ Sandifer, who was making his first start in goal of the season. A Wofford (2-5-1) was called for a foul in the 18-yard penalty box resulting in the PK.

Earlier, in the second half, Page tied the game's score at 2-2 when he knocked home a Josh Inglebright pass at 53:39. The goal came just over a minute after the Terriers had claimed a 2-1 edge. Wofford took the lead in the second half when Phil Beene and Chad Kite found Brandon Lowery at 52:02.

The Terriers struck first as Stephen Newman registered his first score of the campaign at 9:26 on an unassisted tally. Lipscomb (4-4-1) would force a 1-1 halftime tie when T.J. Williams assisted Alexi Achilleos at 23:08.

Sandifer collected seven saves in playing the full 98:59, while Danny Prichard stopped four Terrier shots in playing the entire game in goal for the Bisons.

Wofford will continue its weekend trip to Nashville by playing at Belmont at 2 p.m. Sunday.
