Georgia Southern 3, Savannah State 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern volleyball team won its sixth match of the season 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-11) Thursday night at Savannah State.  The Eagles improve to 6-2 while the Tigers fall to 0-13.

“Tonight was a difficult match for us because it was our fifth match in a row on the road in the past three weeks,” said head coach Nicole McCray.  “Although we won, Savannah State played a great match and hustled very well on defense.  They brought back a lot of balls tonight and have improved a lot since the last time we played them.”

Junior Bailey Coleman led the Eagle through the first two games, tallying 10 kills and two block assists.  In game three, sophomore Christy Dowd recorded 10 kills, for a total of 18 in the match, and recorded double-digit digs (11) in the three frames as well.  Georgia Southern had seven blocks and held Savannah State to a -.011 hitting percentage over the three-game match.  Coleman finished the match with 14 kills, and senior Jennifer Charles also recorded double-digit kills, totaling 11 on the night.

“This match was a good warm-up for us going into conference play,” added McCray.  “We’re looking forward to starting the conference because now we play on a more consistent basis every week.”

The Eagles travel to Greenville, S.C. on Saturday to open Southern Conference play at Furman.
