Charleston Southern 2, Wofford 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A pair of second half goals by host Charleston Southern sent the Lady Buccaneers over visiting Wofford, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the teams' first game of the Big South/SoCon Challenge.

 

Karen Knight tallied the game winner at 76:01 on a penalty kick past Terrier goalkeeper Austin Somers. Earlier in the half, Charleston Southern (2-0) posted the equalizer at 49:06 when Christine Bethke sent a corner across the goal mouth which deflected off a Wofford defender into the net.

 

Freshman Kendra Merchant registered her first collegiate score at 14:28 to give the Terriers an early 1-0 advantage.

 

Wofford (1-2) held an 18-11 shot edge, including a game-high six by Merchant. Somers stopped four Lady Bucs shots, while Mia Cederholm notched nine saves in the cage for Charleston Southern.

 

The Terriers will continue play in the four-team tournament at 1 p.m. Monday when they face Coastal Carolina.

 

Coastal Carolina 2, Appalachian State 1
BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University women’s soccer dropped a tough, 2-1, decision to Coastal Carolina in the opening game of the Big South/Southern Challenge Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. The Mountaineers led in nearly every statistical category but could only convert on one of their seven offensive opportunities.

Appalachian outshot the Chanticleers 12-10 and 7-4 in the first half as the Apps fall to 0-2-0 on the season. Coastal Carolina improved its record to 2-1-0 with the victory behind goalkeeper Jaclyn Stoll’s six saves.

Coastal struck first in the 36th minute on a header from Emily McColl to take a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, CCU got another header in the box, this one from Ashleigh Gunning off the assist from McColl to carry a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers clamped down in the second half and kept CCU off the board and added a goal of their own in the 65th minute from freshman Jennifer MacNeill’s (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) shot from the left side. Sophomore Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla.) was credited with the assist on the tally. The remaining 25 minutes were played scoreless as the Mountaineers were unable to score the equalizer.

Junior Jackie Hoffman (Boca Raton, Fla.) led all players with five shots on the afternoon, while Cleary added four.

Appalachian will continue play in the Big South/Southern Challenge on Monday, September 4 at 3 p.m. versus host Charleston Southern.
