Youngstown State 3, The Citadel 2
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel held a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes left to play, but Youngstown State rallied for two late goals to earn the 3-2 win in the third and final game of The Citadel adidas Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon at WLI Field. Christi Williams knocked in the game-winner for the Penguins as they improve to 2-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-7.
Youngstown State struck first in the fourth minute as a cross from Williams found the foot of Jodi Bowlen who kicked it in for the goal. Citadel freshman Rachelle Ornelas dribbled the ball to the left of the net and fired it in to the upper right corner for her third goal of the season to even the score before the break.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the second half after senior Holli Knox headed the ball into the net from a corner kick by Ornelas at the 55:37 mark. The Dogs just could not hold off the Penguins as they pressed to The Citadel’s half of the pitch and scored two goals within four minutes of each other. Jordan Gapczynski netted the tying point after a cross from Carrie Wack in the 74th minute before Williams received a pass from Bowlen to knock in the go-ahead score, making the final, 3-2.
“I am pleased with the soccer we played today,” said head coach Bob Winch. “Every game we are playing better, we just need to learn to play with a lead. When you are up 2-1 with 15 minutes left, you should win the game, but as long as we keep getting better I’m pleased.”
Freshman keeper Emily Green made her third consecutive start in front of the net for the Bulldogs and made eight saves, while Penguin keeper Caitlin Bodzioney made eight stops of her own.
The Citadel and Youngstown State were fairly matched in shots as YSU notched 17 to the Bulldogs’ 15. The Citadel had 10 of their shots on goal, while YSU made 11 shots on target. The Bulldogs did enjoy an advantage in corner kicks, 3-1.
Knox, Ornelas and freshman Kristine Devine were named to The Citadel adidas Soccer Classic for their efforts. Ornelas netted her third goal and recorded her first assist of the season to become the leading scoring for The Citadel, while Knox scored once and Devine played a prominent role in the backfield.
Francis Marion went undefeated in the adidas Soccer Classic with a 2-1 win over Youngstown State on Friday and a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Youngstown State finished 1-1, while the Bulldogs fell 0-2.
Next up, the Bulldogs will hit the road to face cross-town rival Charleston Southern on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. at Buccaneer Field.
UNC Greensboro 1, Indiana 1
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro Spartans and the Indiana Hoosiers battled to a 1-1 tie at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosiers (3-2-3) took the 1-0 lead with six seconds left in the first half when freshman Liz Holby netted her first goal of the season. Holby connected on a feed from Megan Pipkins and shot the ball 10 yards out to the back of the net for the one goal advantage.
UNCG junior midfielder Karla Davis scored the equalizer for the Spartans in the 67th minute of play. Freshman Kelly Attayek dribbled the ball to the bottom right hand corner of the 18 yard box and crossed the ball right to Davis who shot it past Hoosier keeper, Stacey Van Boxmeer for her first goal of the season. For Attayek, it was her second assist on the season.
Indiana kept the ball on UNCG’s side of the pitch in the final two minutes but the Spartan defense held strong. The two teams finished regulation in a
1-1 draw.
In the first overtime session, UNCG goalkeeper Katherine Ryan stopped the only two shots taken by the Hoosiers, allowing the game to go into the second overtime period. The Spartans fired a pair of shots in the second overtime but were unable to produce the game-winner. Indiana held a 17-11 shot advantage as well as a 10-2 lead in corner kicks for the match.
In goal, Ryan recorded five saves for UNCG and Van Boxmeer collected five as well for Indiana.
“It was a good game. I was proud of how we competed,” head coach Eddie Radwanski stated, “It was a lack of concentration on our part at the end of the first. But we were on top of our game in the second half. Indiana is a solid team and I’m proud of how we finished.”
UNCG (1-7-1) begins Southern Conference play on Sunday, September 24 when they travel to Elon. Kick off set for 7 pm.
Georgia Southern 0, Winthrop 1
STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern and Winthrop battled for over 82 minutes without a score before Winthrop’s Kristen Lee finally broke the tie to give the Eagles a hard-fought 1-0 win Sunday at GSU’s Eagle Field.
Sunday’s match bore a resemblance to Friday when Georgia Southern lost 1-0 to Georgia State on a goal with less than 15 minutes remaining.
”I think we played better today,” said GSU head coach Ashley Hart. “We came out and fought hard for a full 90 minutes. We had a decent first half, but I thought we came out to play in the second half. I’m proud of our team.”
Winthrop controlled possession and dominated the early going, launching six shots in the first seven minutes while holding Georgia Southern without a scoring attempt for the first 20 minutes.
Georgia Southern nearly took the lead at the 66:54 mark when sophomore Audrey Brown (Fort Worth, Texas) drew iron for the second time in the match. Brown broke free down the left wing and lofted a shot that deflected off the right post and back across the goal mouth. A Winthrop defender was able to clear the rebound away from danger.
Winthrop just missed a chance at 78:31 when Chelsea White’s header was kept out on a diving save by freshman Lauren Santos (Berwyn, Ill.). Less than a minute later, Jessica Hausfeld had an open net but her shot was blocked and Erin Foote’s rebound attempt went wide right.
Lees goal came with 7:32 left in the match. Ashley Abood fed Lee with a through-pass down the right side and Lee’s shot was lifted over Santos into the net. GSU was able to get one shot on net in the final moments, but did not trouble the Winthrop keeper.
Winthrop’s Dimitra Poulos made three saves for her third clean sheet of the season. Santos had a career high 10 stops in net for Georgia Southern.
Winthrop outshot Georgia Southern 21-7 for the match, including 13-4 in the second half.
”Our defense did extremely well,” Hart added. “The shots they did get weren’t that threatening, they were hitting 30-, 40-yard shots.”
Georgia Southern wraps up their four-match homestand next Sunday, opening up Southern Conference play hosting Davidson at 2 p.m.
Appalachian State 2, Longwood 1
BOONE, N.C. ? Freshman Caroline Lowe (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a breakaway goal with 28 seconds left in the second overtime period to give Appalachian State University women’s soccer a 2-1 victory over Longwood Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
After two first half goals produced a 1-1 tie, the two teams played nearly
75 minutes of scoreless soccer before Appalachian ended the stalemate. Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C.) set up the gamewinner, kicking a long ball past the Longwood back line. Lowe remained onside, then blew past the defense to collect Murphy’s kick and drill a shot into the lower near corner of the goal for the win. The win improves ASU?s record to 3-4-0 while Longwood falls to 3-3-2.
Appalachian had prior chances to end the match earlier as they controlled the majority of the match, outshooting Longwood 34-10 and holding a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn?t seem to find the goal until Lowe put away her 12th shot of the afternoon.
Longwood scored early on a corner kick in the 11 minute that Sarah Fening put into goal off the kick from Tiffany Crane. Fening headed Crane?s corner, but missed on her initial attempt. However, she was able to recover and boot the ball into the center of the net.
Appalachian needed 25 minutes to get the goal back and tie the match. Jackie Hoffman (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored the equalizer on a free kick she put into the upper near corner of the goal. Longwood staved off Appalachian in the second half to force the extra periods, both of which were controlled predominately by ASU. The Mountaineers outshot Longwood, 19-3, in the second half and two overtime periods.
Anne Whitmore was a big reason for the extended match as she stopped 13 shots in goal for the Lancers. Appalachian’s Emma White (Arden, N.C.) recorded four saves in the win. Seven different Mountaineers recorded shots including Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla.) who had six shots on goal, but couldn?t find a way to get the ball past Whitmore.
ASU will return to action on Friday, September 22 as the team continues its five-match homestand versus South Carolina State at 3 p.m.
Austin Peay 3, Chattanooga 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -? The Lady Mocs fell 3-1 to Austin Peay at Morgan Brothers Field Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Lady Govs scored early to take a 1-0 lead. Ashley Beck took a cross form Virginia Penner in the fourth minute for the early lead. In the 12th minute, freshman Chelsea Hurst had the opportunity to tie the match on a penalty kick, but it was stopped by Austin Peay keeper Brooke Abrams, who had 10 saves on the day.
Hurst would redeem herself just seconds before the end of the first half when she capitalized on the Lady Govs failure to clear the ball out of the box. Hurst punched in the shot to tie it up 1-1 going into the half.
Midway through the second half the Lady Govs took the lead on an unassisted shot by Jessica Hosse for the eventual game winner at the 64:35 mark. About eight minutes later Beck would put APSU up by a pair of goals sending home a shot rebounded off Chattanooga keeper Stacey Matthiessen for the 3-1 lead.
Austin Peay narrowly outshot the Lady Mocs 19-18 in a closely played match. Matthiessen tallied six saves on the day playing all 90 minutes in goal. The Lady Mocs even their record at 3-3-1 and will travel to Huntsville, Ala., Thursday afternoon to take on Alabama A&M for its final non-conference contest this season. Game time is set for 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Western Carolina 2, Gardner-Webb 1
Cullowhee, N.C. ? Junior Lauren Atkinson scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to complete a strong second half in Western Carolina’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Following a Bulldog foul about 10 yards outside the box to the right of the goal, sophomore Arlan Whittle played the ball on a set piece to the lower right side of the box to Atkinson, who had been positioned behind the Gardner-Webb wall, where she turned with the ball and uncorked a shot from the right that found the lower left corner of the cage for the score.
The win, which evened Western’s seasonal record at 4-4, was the second-straight and fourth in its last five on the season. Gardner-Webb (6-2) lost for just the second time this season, both coming against Southern Conference opponents. Sunday’s match was delayed nearly two hours due to travel problems Gardner-Webb encountered en route to Cullowhee.
Gardner-Webb took the early advantage, scoring 26 minutes into the first half off its lone corner kick opportunity. Bulldog freshman Sarah Keyser served the corner kick into a crowded box in front of the Catamount goal where her classmate, Franchesca Formagie, headed it past WCU freshman keeper, Kelly Gulledge, who appeared to be shielded from making the stop by the mass of players.
Out of intermission, Western turned up the offensive intensity, accounting for six unanswered shots before GWU sent one towards the Catamount goal. WCU’s increased pressure finally paid off in the 67th minute. Junior Rebekah Mumm, who made her first career start on the afternoon, played give-and-go with Dittmer just outside the box. Dittmer juked past one Bulldog defender, but her shot attempt was deflected. Freshman Bri Cunningham gathered the rebound and fired on goal, bouncing it off the near-side post. Both Cunningham and Dittmer collapsed to the center off the post shot with Cunningham dropping the loose ball past the Bulldog keeper for the game-tying score.
The match appeared to be headed for overtime before Atkinson’s heroics led the Catamounts to the victory, keeping Western Carolina’s record perfect against Gardner-Webb (4-0 all-time).
Gulledge made her second-straight start between the pipes for Western, recording both of the Catamount saves on the day with one goal allowed. Senior Alesha Row entered the game at the start of the second half but was not challenged by any of Gardner-Webb’s five second half shots.
Western out shot GWU 15-to-12, including a 9-to-5 edge in the second half. The Catamounts also earned eight corner kick opportunities with six coming in the second half alone.
Western returns to action on Friday, Sept. 22, when it visits Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., for a 4:00 pm non-conference match.
