College of Charleston 4, UAB 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Junior Grant Guthrie’s two goals paced the College of Charleston to an impressive 4-2 victory over UAB Friday night at the Jim 'N Nicks/Puma BSC Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
UAB (3-3-0) scored the first goal of match in the 7th minute of action, through an unassisted goal by Jerson Monteiro.
Guthrie scored his second goal of the season in the 41st minute to tie the match for CofC (5-1-1). Senior Jeremy Gold had an assist in the goal.
Sophomore David Levine provided an assist for Guthrie’s second goal of the match in the 50th minute to give the Cougars the advantage, 2-1.
UAB responded with a goal at the 61:03 mark of the match off a converted penalty kick by Lukasz Kwapisz. However, sophomore Casey Gold scored his first goal of the season at 61:25 to give the Cougars the advantage, 3-2. Senior Scott Milroth notched the assist for CofC.
Senior Jeremy Gold finished the scoring of the match by netting his fourth goal of the season in the 81st minute to give the Cougars a lead of 4-2.
Junior Corbin Waller made three saves for CofC to gain his fourth win of the season.
The Cougars had 20 shots in the match, while UAB had only nine.
The last time College of Charleston’s has reached five wins in seven games played was in 1994, when the Cougars started the season with a record of 5-2-0.
The College of Charleston returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 17 against Birmingham-Southern in the final match of the Jim 'N Nicks/Puma BSC Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m.
William & Mary 5, UNC Greensboro 1
NORFOLK, VA ? Andrew Hoxie and Pat Scherder each scored twice as William & Mary stunned UNC Greensboro, 5-1, in men’s soccer action at the Stihl Classic on Friday night.
UNCG, ranked No. 29 by College Soccer News, actually outshot William & Mary, 16-15, for the match. The Tribe made the most of its nine shots on goal, scoring with five of them. UNCG had five shots on goal in the match.
The Tribe (3-4-0) earned its first win over a ranked team in five attempts this season. William & Mary scored twice in the first 13 minutes of the match to jump out to a quick lead. Scherder scored off a feed from Doug Ernst just 4:47 into the contest to give William & Mary an early 1-0 advantage. Hoxie then scored his third of the season off an assist by Scherder at 12:20 to make it 2-0.
The scored stayed that way until the second half when Scherder scored off a deflection 6:23 into the second half to make it a 3-0 Tribe lead. Ernst scored again at 69:32 before UNCG’s Randi Patterson got the Spartans on the board. Patterson scored his sixth of the season off an assist by Mike Richardson to make it 4-1 at 72:56. However, Hoxie scored again with 2:11 to play off a Jarrett Thomas helper to close out the scoring.
UNCG will look to get back into the win column on Sunday when it faces tournament host Old Dominion at 3:30 pm.
