Michael Mentz ? Chattanooga
Junior ? Bloemfontein, South Africa ? 3.794 GPA in Biology
Mentz finished eighth out of 60 runners overall, fifth collegian, at the PowerAde Invitational in Chattanooga last Friday. Mentz ran the 5K in 15:40 to lead his team to a 3rd place finish behind SEC powers Alabama and the Vols of Tennessee. Mentze was the first non-Alabama finisher in the collegiate division.
Other top performers:
William Wilson, Sr, The Citadel (Columbia, S.C. ? Bus. Admin.) Wilson ran a 16:32 in the 5K to finish 1st of 35 runners at the Bulldog Duals. The course was very muddy with ankle deep water and mud in several places. It was Wilson’s second win of the season as he also won the South Carolina meet the week before.
Eric Garren, Jr, Elon (Bristol, CT ? 3.9 GPA in Business) Garren finished first for Elon in the University of Virginia Lou Onesty Invite with a time of 27:10 on a very tough, hilly course.
Max Gustaitis, So, College of Charleston (Bloomington, Ind., Bloomington North ? 3.397 GPA Undecided) Gustaitis finished in 2nd place of 35 runners in the 5K at the Bulldog Duals last Friday. Gustaitis ran the race in 16:35 on an extremely slow and wet course.
Bryan Brooks, Fr, Wofford College (West Columbia, S.C., GSSM) Brooks ran a personal best and Furman record 27:48 in the 8K at the Eye Opener last weekend. That time gave Brooks a 15th place finish out of 211 runners. Amazingly, it was his first collegiate race and first 8K.
