Wilson Wins Second Consecutive Meet as The Citadel Dominates at Bulldog Duals |

Charleston, S.C. ? Senior Will Wilson edged the College of Charleston’s Matt Gustaitis at the finish line by three seconds for the second consecutive week as The Citadel posted solid performances by both the men’s and women’s cross country teams at the Bulldog Duals. Wilson ran 16:32 to beat all runners, topping Gustaitis’ mark of 16:35. The Bulldogs won all but one of the dual meet races in Friday's competition.
Wilson won the overall title in the men’s race for the second consecutive week as well as he won last week at the USC Invitational. Wilson won that 5k race with a time of 15:47 as Gustaitis came in second with a time of 15:50. Charles Kutz (16:50) and Matt Holmes (16:53) came in fourth and fifth, respectively, as The Citadel men’s team went on to defeat the College of Charleston 26-30 in the duals race. The Citadel men also topped Charleston Souther 15-50 in the evening’s action.
On the women’s side, sophomore Sarah Strickland ran a team best 19:58 for The Citadel, finishing fourth overall. Freshman Katheryn Gatewood finished seventh overall with a time of 20:30 as the women fell to the College of Charleston, 17-43. The Citadel women dominated in the other dual meet scorings as the Bulldogs topped Charleston Southern 15-47 and bested Savannah State 15-50. The Cougars placed runners in the top three spots in the women’s race.
The Citadel takes a break in the action for a few weeks, next competing in The Citadel Invitational on Sept. 30. CofC Runners Split With The Citadel At Dual Meet
College of Charleston and The Citadel cross country teams met in head-to-head competition. Friday in The Citadel Dual Meet (5K) at James Island County Park.

"We look good up top, and we're closing the gaps within our pack," said head coach Amy Schuckert. "We just need to continue to close the race strongly."
College of Charleston’s Katie Hedley (19:38), Karen Corson (19:50) and Amy Laughlin (19:51) took the top three spots, while The Citadel’s Sarah Strickland took the No. 4 spot with a time of 19:58. Charleston’s Ashley Arnold posted a time of 20:03 to finish fifth.
CofC finished the race with 17 points, and The Citadel netted 43 points.
On the men’s side, The Citadel had a :03 edge as Will Wilson finished with 16:32. The Cougars’ Max Gustatitis clocked a 16:35 time for second, followed by Aubrey Darney with 16:50. The Bulldogs claimed the Nos. 4 and 5 spots as Charles Kutz and Matt Homes finished with 16:50 and 16:53, respectively, to round out the top 5.
CofC women boasted a 15-50 win over Charleston Southern, while the men topped Savannah State with a perfect score.
The cross country teams will to travel Rock Hill next weekend to run in the Asics/Winthrop Invitational.

Marchant Leads Lady Mocs to Season Opening Win; Men Take Third
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Chattanooga women’s cross country team, led by Lanni Marchant, finished 1-2-3 to take first in the Powerade Opener. Alabama took first in the men’s race followed by Tennessee and the Mocs.
Marchant finished with a time of 11:03 over the two mile course followed by Sabrina Lefort in second at 11:28 and Nettie Halcomb was third with a time of 11:44. Chattanooga had all five scoring runners in the top 10 with Katie Williams sixth (11:59) and newcomer Shelley Taylor eighth (12:04).
“I expected the older girls to be in front and they were,” Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier said. “Lanni is doing a great job and Sabrina really picked it up a notch. I was a little apprehensive about today, but now I feel really good about their chance at the conference.”
The Lady Mocs finished with 20 points followed by Samford with 51 and Lipscomb in third with 56. Auburn was fourth with 103 points and Middle Tennessee placed fifth with 141. Tennessee State was sixth with 172 points.
In the men’s race, Alabama took the top four spots led by Emmanuel Bor with a time of 15:05 in the 5000 meter event. Behind him were teammates Augustus Maiyo (15:09), Abraham Kutingala (15:10) and Titus Koeh (15:35).
The Tide finished with an overall score of 22 followed by Tennessee with 60 and the Mocs, led by Michael Mentz, were third with an overall score of 69.
Mentz finished fifth with a time of 15:40 and Tim Clark was the second Chattanooga runner across the finish line at 15:59 in eighth place. Jeff Taylor was 16th overall (16:10) and Kevin Huwe was right behind him at 16:12. Chattanooga’s fifth scoring runner, Jordan Longstreth was 23rd with a time of 16:21.
“You know what you’re up against when you’re running with the SEC,” Gautier said. “We have some new guys. It will be a while before we can get back to where we were, but we can build on this and we have time to improve.”
Samford took fourth with 86 points, while Auburn was fifth with 108. Lipscomb was sixth overall (160) and Middle Tennessee was seventh with 209 points.
Both Chattanooga teams will be back in action next Friday at the UTK Invitational. Race time is set for 6:30 p.m.
Elon Cross Country Competes at Lou Onesty Invitational
EARLYSVILLE, Va.- The Elon men's and women's cross country squads competed at the Lou Onesty Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia on Saturday morning.
On the women's side, Anna Mae Flynn was Elon's top finisher. She placed 33rd with a time of 19:29.80. Caitlin Beeler finished 42nd with a time of 19:53.80 while Katelyn Ealer ran a time of 20:05.50 to placed 47th. Jessica Doan finished 49th with a time of 20:09.00 and Katie White ran a time of 20:19.60 to placed 52nd and round out Elon's top-five. Alissa Wilke ran a time of 20:39.30 to finish 64th while Amy Sulser placed 66th with a time of 20:48.30 and Colleen McCarthy finished 73rd with a time of 21:05.80. Kelly Chencharik (85th/21:48.30), Alana Morro (92nd/22:18.10), Caroline Corbyons (93rd/22:30.10), Meaghan Dolan (96th/22:49.40) and Meghan Atkinson (103rd/23:32.20) all finished for the Phoenix.
For the Elon men, Eric Garren placed 56th with at a time of 27:10.70 and Brain Hunt ran a time of 27:29.80 to placed 62nd. Adam Lindsey finished 64th with a time of 27:37.50 while Ricky Myers finished 76th with a 28:05.70 time and Eric Lewandowski placed 82nd with a 28:17.90 time to complete the top-five finishers.
Jason MacCollum finished 83rd with a time of 28:22.30 and Justin Garren placed 86th with a time of 28:42.70. Will Bertram (105th/30:32.30), Andrew Hawkey (106th/30:39.30) and John Maconi (111th/31:35.20) all finished for Elon. The squads return to action on Sept. 26 at the Old North State Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
Furman Men and Women Win Eye Opener Invitational
Johnson, Albrecht earn individual victories.

Spartanburg, S.C. - Senior Eric Albrecht and freshman Brittany Johnson earned individual victories as the Furman men's and women's cross country teams each won the Eye Opener Invitational on Saturday.
Albrecht finished the 8K course in a time of 26:20 to take top place in the men's Division I competition, while Patrick Morgan took second place with a time of 26:40. Jeff O'Connell, Joe Tenini, Michael Warner, John Dowlen, Alex Placensia, Jed Wilkerson, and F.J. Goodwin finished fourth through tenth, respectively.
On the women's side, Johnson finished in a time of 19:14 on the 5K course. Furman took the top four spots in the meet as Holly Stewart (19:46), Page Bridges (19:49), and Lisa Mulvey (20:04) were the next finishers for the Paladins.
Furman returns to action next Saturday at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill.
Catamount Women Place Second, Men Third at Clemson Cross Country Invitational
Savery leads three WCU women with second-place; Fassinger records men’s lone top 10
Clemson, S.C. ? Led by junior Kerrie Savery’s second-place run, Western Carolina’s women’s cross country team put three runners in the top 10 to score a team second place finish at the Clemson Cross Country Invitational last Saturday. Senior Dan Fassinger tallied the lone top 10 for Western’s men as the Catamounts took third place overall in the meet.
The South Carolina Gamecocks won the team title on the women’s side with 31 points. Western just edged out Gardner-Webb for second by one point, 48-to-49, followed by South Carolina State in fourth and Piedmont College in fifth. The host Clemson Tigers won the men’s team crown with 19 points, followed by Gardner-Webb in second with 54 points and WCU in third, ten points in arrears. South Carolina State was fourth, with Piedmont College rounding out the field in fifth.
Savery’s time of 18:45 in the women’s 5-K run was just nine-seconds off the individual winner, Michele Milner of Gardner-Webb who tripped the tape first at 18:36. Savery, a native of Palm Harbor, Fla., posted the 11th-best 5-K time in WCU school history on Saturday, leading a trio of Catamounts in the top 10. Sophomore Sky Aiello ran her best collegiate time of 19:36 to place seventh, edging out freshman teammate Lindsay Groce who finished eighth just half a second back. Aiello and Groce tied for the 30th-best top time in school history.
Rounding out Western’s women was freshman Sara Dickson in 16th (20:38), sophomore Ann Wagner in 18th (20:51), freshman Brittany Beeker in 21st (21:09), freshman Annie Bailey in 29th (22:16), and sophomore Jenna Hester in 31st with a time of 22:42.
On the men’s side, Fassinger turned the 8-K course in 26:48 to finish 10th overall, but was scored in the ninth position in terms of team scoring. He was followed by freshman Stephen Hammond in 14th with a time of 28:14 in his first collegiate event. Another first-year runner, Jake Clawson, ran 16th (28:22) followed by sophomore teammate Field Miller in 17th with a time of 28:40.
The Catamounts also captured positions 20-through-23 as sophomore Jesse Ramirez (29:03), Noah Taylor (29:12), freshman Jamie McCann (29:36), and junior Dylan Hermelee (29:49) all crossed the line in sequential order, separated by a total of 46 seconds.
Western returns to action this Friday, Sept. 15, hosting the Western Carolina Open on-campus in Cullowhee. Teams from Georgia, Appalachian State, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, East Tennessee State and Milligan College will be on had with a start time of 5:00 pm. This year’s event is WCU’s first after a one-year hiatus with the new trail winding around the WCU campus, both beginning and ending near the Catamount Athletic Complex track.

Brooks sets new school record to help Terriers to second-place finish
The Wofford men’s cross country team finished second in the division-I category at the 8k Eye Opener in Spartanburg, S.C. on Sept. 9, the team’s first meet of the season.
Freshman Bryan Brooks had the team’s best outing in the 8k run, finishing third in the division-I category and fifteenth overall. He set a new school record with his time of 27:48.
“Even though we all ran in the race together, freshman Bryan Brooks ran a stellar first-ever 8k,” head coach Andrea Stehman said.
The team sent five total runners to compete in the meet: senior Chris Williams, sophomore Tommy Weber and freshmen Brooks, Josh Shumaker and Justin Hunter.
Finishing behind Brooks for the Terriers were Shumaker (29:34), Hunter (30:27), Weber (31:26) and Williams (32:31).
Weber improved on his career-best 8k time by 37 seconds.
“Although in the team competition we were bettered by conference rival Furman, we had our best season opener in the program's history,” Stehman said. “We put forth a strong effort on both (the men’s and women’s) sides.”
The Terriers return to action Saturday, Sept. 16 in Rock Hill, S.C. at the Winthrop/Asics Invitational where sophomore runner Brian Smith will rejoin the squad.
Terrier women finish second in Eye Opener
The women’s cross country team finished second in the division-I class at the 8k Eye Opener in Spartanburg, S.C. on Sept. 9.
Junior Lauren Bosshardt had the team’s best outing, finishing fifth in the division-I category and fifteenth overall with a time of 20:13.
Freshman Katie Fields also had a solid first outing with a time of 21:15 which earned her a ninth-place finish.
Following Bosshardt and Fields were senior Mandy Mills (22:06), freshman Jessie Sahms (22:23), junior Sarah Whitener (22:33), freshman Kari Harris (23:40) and senior Ro Rogers (29:57).
The Terriers’ best race of the day went to senior Mandy Mills who improved on her career-best time by 22sec. Her previous best was at the Southern Conference championships her freshman year.
“Although in the team competition we were bettered by conference rival Furman, we had the best season opener in our program's history,” head coach Andrea Stehman said. “We put forth a strong effort on both (the men’s and women’s) sides.”
The Terriers return to action Saturday, Sept. 16 in Rock Hill, S.C., at the Winthrop/Asics Invitational where sophomore runner Justina Olivio will rejoin the squad.
