Davidson 4, Radford 1
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Marco Antunez and Whitey Bolan each netted a goal and set up another to lead the Davidson Wildcats to a 4-1 victory over Radford in men?s soccer action and the final round of the Charlotte JAKO Invitational Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field. The win was the third straight for Davidson as it improves to 3-3-0 overall, while the Highlanders drop to 2-3-0 on the season.
Radford wasted little time getting on the board as Ramon Negron found the back of the net 48 seconds into the contest with his team-leading third goal of the season. Justin Zimmer started the combination when he played a ball from the left into the box to Franklin Elimbi, who set up Negron with the blast from just shy of 20 yards out.
“Radford started the game much better than we did,” said Matt Spear, who is in his sixth season as Wildcat head coach. “But as the game wore on, our ability was the difference.”
The Wildcats evened the score at 1-1 when Tom Lavan received a pass from fellow forward Antunez and ripped a low strike by the outstretched arms of Radford keeper Zach Roszel to the bottom left corner of the goal. The equalizer was set up when David Sartorio raced down the sideline and found Antunez, who headed it backwards to Lavan, and then the two played it back and forth until the one-one-one opportunity was created. The 30th minute goal was the third of the season for the Omaha, Neb., native.
“These were key wins for us to get back .500,” commented Wildcat midfielder Sartorio. ?Hopefully this positive momentum will carry us into the game with Coastal Carolina Wednesday.”
With just 58 ticks remaining in the opening period, Davidson grabbed the lead (2-1) for good when Antunez put away his one-on-one with Roszel. Bolan set up the eventual game-winner after receiving a pass from a Wildcat midfielder and delivered a perfect pass to Antunez. The goal was the first of the season for the Davidson senior and fourth of his career.
Aaron West extended the Wildcats lead with his first score of the 2006 season in the 58th minute of play. After a Radford foul just outside the box, Robby Hoak curled a free kick around the Radford wall to Mac Wilkie, who deflected it back to West for a wide open header at the far post.
Just minutes after Davidson matched its season-high for goals in a contest, Bolan netted his first career strike to go along with his first assist in a Wildcat uniform earlier in the contest. The Wilmington, N.C., native tracked down a rebound off a Lavan blasts from about 15 yards and drove a low shot of his own past a diving Roszel for the Wildcats? first four-goal match since the 2004 season when they defeated Georgia Southern 4-3 in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament.
Davidson could have struck a fifth time in the 68th minute, but Hoak?s attempted PK was turned away by the Highlander keeper.
For the fourth consecutive contest the Wildcats? controlled the shot total outshooting Radford by a 13-6 margin. Ben Ashton and Robby Goldsberry each turned away a shot in goal for Davidson, while the Highlanders? Roszel and Chris Dykstra stop four and one, respectively.
The Wildcats continue their four-game trip away from home in a 7 p.m. match at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Radford returns to the field Friday, Sept. 15 when it battles Mercer in the opening round of the Wingate Inn Classic in Rock Hill, S.C., at 5 p.m.
“We?re far from the finished product, but we are getting better and better each game,” said Coach Spear.
UNC Greensboro 5, Belmont 2
GREENSBORO, NC ? Randi Patterson scored three goals for the second time in his career as UNC Greensboro defeated Belmont, 5-2, in a men’s soccer action at the 2006 UNCG Men’s Soccer Classic.
Patterson, who did not play in UNCG’s last two matches because of a conference ejection rule, scored his third, fourth and fifth goals of the year. It was his third-ever six-point match, joining last year’s hat trick against Charlotte and a two-goal, two-assist match against Georgia Southern last year. He now has 53 goals and 124 points in his collegiate career.
Belmont (1-5-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Jay Ayres scored off of his own rebound. Amr Ali served the ball into the box off a corner kick.
Ayres initial header was blocked by a UNCG defender at the right side post.
However, the rebound bounced right back to Ayres’ foot and he blasted it into the goal from four yards out.
Patterson, a two-time All-American and a candidate for the Hermann Trophy, tied the game just 3:09 later. Fellow Hermann candidate Scott Jones made a run through the middle of the field, tapping the ball to Travis Young as he approached the box. Young then flicked the ball ahead to Patterson, who hit a shot from 14 yards out into the right side of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
Sophomore Thomas Campbell gave UNCG a 2-1 lead midway through the first half. D.J. McCurry served the ball ahead to Campbell on the right sideline.
Campbell then made a long run down the right side into the box and hit a blast from 14 yards out that went off of the keeper’s hands and just inside the right post for Campbell’s first goal of the season.
Patterson, a senior from Hackensack, NJ, made it 3-1 just before intermission. Matt Cunningham hit a ball from the right side of the goal that Patterson got just enough of his head on to re-direct it into the goal.
Belmont cut the lead to 3-2 just over 10 minutes into the second half when Ayres connected on a penalty kick at 55:40. But sophomore Henning Jonasson’s free kick from 22 yards out was beautifully hooked into the top right corner of the net at 64:17 to put the Spartans back up by two goals, 4-2.
Patterson completed his hat trick at 76:29. D.J. McCurry and Scott Jones picked up their second assists of the day when McCurry found Jones from the right side of the net. Jones made a perfect heel pass from the right post over to Patterson on the left side of the net. Patterson just chipped it in from the doorstep for the trifecta.
UNCG, which is ranked as high as No. 18 in the national polls this week, outshot Belmont, 21-14, on the afternoon. Over the last three seasons, UNCG is now 30-3-0 when Patterson records at least one point.
The Spartans (4-2-0) return to action next Friday at 4:30 pm when they face William & Mary in the first match of the Stihl Soccer Classic in Norfolk, VA.

Georgia Southern 3, Centenary 0
SHREVEPORT, La. ? Freshman forward Jon Cox scored his first and second goals of his collegiate career as the Georgia Southern Eagles shut out host Centenary College, 3-0, Saturday (Sept. 8), at the Centenary Classic.
Only five minutes into the contest, Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) worked his way through the Gents defense, reaching the top of the box. He then blasted a shot off the keeper’s hands that found its way into the net, his first goal as a collegiate player.
Both teams were dry until the second half when Cox produced a winner off of a blocked shot. Teammate Scott DeVault’s (Woodstock, Ga.) shot ended up in Cox’s control, and the freshman added another goal to extend the Eagles lead, 2-0.
Less than one minute later DeVault set up another helper for teammate Calvin Simon (Wilmington, N.C.). With 70:30 on the clock, Simon scored from within the six, putting the Eagles up 3-0.
Shortly thereafter, an argument between Centenary head coach Eric Mayo and the center referee ensued. After an initial yellow card, and then a second after further argument, Centenary walked off the field following Mayo’s ejection, ending the match almost 20 minutes early.
Junior Brian Young (Roswell, Ga.) gathered three saves on the night, improving his record to 3-2, while Centenary keeper James Speed also had three saves.
After defeating Georgia Southern 5-1 on Friday, Oral Roberts battled Lipscomb to a 0-0 tie, Saturday night. Both schools finished the weekend without a loss, as Lipscomb also beat Centenary in a 4-3 overtime win, Friday night.
Head coach Kevin Kennedy and the Eagles next face Gardner-Webb at Boiling Springs, N.C., Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
